Santa Maria sits in northern Santa Barbara County on California's Central Coast, about ten miles inland from the Pacific. Most RV travelers use it as a base for the dune-and-beach corridor just to the north, in San Luis Obispo County, where the bulk of the region's developed RV camping is clustered around Oceano and Pismo Beach. Reservations can be made at most state parks until two days prior to the planned arrival, subject to availability. Reservations can sell out within a minute or two at popular campgrounds during peak season, so target a midweek arrival if possible.
