Camping near Fieldbrook, California
Fieldbrook is a small unincorporated community in Humboldt County, just inland from Arcata and McKinleyville on California's North Coast. The area sits within easy reach of the coastal redwoods and the Pacific, which makes it a practical staging point for RV trips into Redwood National and State Parks, Humboldt Bay, and the Trinidad coastline.
Most overnight options are private RV parks rather than in-town campgrounds. Mad River Rapids RV Park sits along the Mad River corridor near Arcata, while Emerald Forest Cabins and RV, Redwood Coast Cabins & RV Resort, View Crest Lodge, and Sounds Of The Sea RV Park and Spa cluster around nearby Trinidad and the redwood coast. Public campgrounds in the surrounding state and national parks add primitive and developed sites within a short drive. Coastal fog, mild summers, and wet winters define the camping season, and the region's parks stay accessible year-round even when some facilities scale back.
Things to do around Fieldbrook
The big draw is the redwoods. Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, Redwood National Park, and Humboldt Redwoods State Park all sit within a reasonable RV drive and offer trails through old-growth groves, elk meadows, and scenic drives like the Newton B. Drury Parkway and the Avenue of the Giants. Coastal stops include Trinidad State Beach, Sue-meg State Park (formerly Patrick's Point), and Clam Beach. Fern Canyon at Gold Bluffs Beach, reached by a gravel road inside Prairie Creek, is a popular day trip. In Arcata and Eureka, families can break up driving days with the Arcata Marsh, the Sequoia Park Zoo, and Old Town Eureka. Kayaking on Humboldt Bay and tide-pooling along the rocky headlands round out the list.

63° / 52°F 10 mmCool, dry, foggy mornings; peak season, book months ahead.

- winter
December - February
54° / 43°F 180 mmWet season; storms can close roads in the redwood parks.
The North Coast has a cool, wet, oceanic climate, and seasonality matters more than absolute temperature when planning. Late spring through early fall, roughly May through September, brings the most reliable weather and is the standard camping window for the redwoods. Summer days are mild rather than hot, and morning fog along the coast is common, often clearing by midday inland near Fieldbrook.
Winter is the wet season. Heavy rain is normal from November through March, and storms can bring road closures, downed trees, and standing water in low-lying campsites. Snow is rare at sea level. Most private RV parks in the area stay open year-round, but some state-park campgrounds reduce loops or close seasonally, and access roads such as the Gold Bluffs Beach route can close after storms. Fall offers quieter campgrounds, clearer skies between systems, and good wildlife viewing as Roosevelt elk are active in the prairies.
How to book sites in the area
Private RV parks near Fieldbrook, including Mad River Rapids RV Park, Emerald Forest Cabins and RV, Redwood Coast Cabins & RV Resort, View Crest Lodge, and Sounds Of The Sea RV Park and Spa, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and holidays fill earliest, so booking several months ahead is sensible. California State Park campgrounds, including Prairie Creek's Elk Prairie and Gold Bluffs Beach, are reserved through ReserveCalifornia on a rolling six-month booking window that opens daily at 8 a.m. Pacific. National Park Service sites within Redwood National and State Parks use Recreation.gov. A handful of first-come, first-served public sites exist but cannot be counted on in peak season.
What to expect on the ground
Expect narrow, tree-lined roads and tight turns once off Highway 101, particularly on routes into state-park campgrounds. Larger Class A coaches and long fifth-wheels should confirm length limits with each campground before booking, as many redwood loops were laid out for smaller rigs. Private parks near Fieldbrook generally offer full hookups, Wi-Fi of variable quality, and laundry. Cell coverage is patchy once inside the parks. Cool, damp nights are typical even in summer, so bring layers and expect condensation on awnings. Bear-aware food storage is required in the redwood parks, and Roosevelt elk should be given wide berth on roadsides and in meadows.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Fieldbrook, CA
How much does an RV rental in Fieldbrook, CA typically cost?
Renting an RV in Fieldbrook is surprisingly affordable for a Redwood Coast destination. Travel trailers usually start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs sit at $250 to $400 per night. Summer and fall foliage weekends are the highest-demand windows, so booking 8 to 12 weeks ahead locks in better rates. For a cheap RV rental in Fieldbrook, look at midweek pickups in May or late September, and filter by travel trailers if a host nearby can deliver. Pro tip: many Humboldt County hosts include generators and camp chairs at no extra charge, which saves you a Walmart run in Arcata before heading to the redwoods.
humboldtgov.org/1888/Visit-HumboldtWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Fieldbrook?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Fieldbrook, California. There's no commercial license or special RV endorsement required for the Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and even most Class A rigs on RVezy. You just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the booking platform, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto club before your trip. Pro tip: if it's your first time behind the wheel of a motorhome, message the host and ask for a longer walkthrough at pickup. Humboldt hosts are known for being patient and thorough.

Yes, every RV rental in Fieldbrook booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included with your reservation. The protection plan helps cover accidental damage to the RV, so a small mishap on a redwood-lined backroad won't ruin your trip. During checkout you choose the coverage level that fits your comfort, from basic to premium, and the host has no say in which tier you pick. This isn't traditional auto insurance, but it provides real financial peace of mind for your Fieldbrook RV trip. Pro tip: snap a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff. It takes two minutes and makes any future claim painless, leaving you free to enjoy Humboldt County.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Fieldbrook RV trip?
You're not locked in the moment you book. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation (not the host), and there's a money-back grace period right after booking so you have time to confirm plans, check the Pacific weather forecast, or coordinate with your travel group. Refund amounts after the grace period depend on how close you are to your trip start date. You'll see the exact terms during checkout before you confirm. Pro tip: book early for peak redwoods season (July through September), then relax knowing RVezy's customer support team is just a message away if your plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Fieldbrook RV rental?
Absolutely. A pet-friendly RV rental in Fieldbrook is easy to find on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you'll see every listing where dogs are welcome. Humboldt County is a dream for dog owners: Clam Beach County Park (about 15 minutes from Fieldbrook) allows leashed dogs on the sand, and the Hammond Trail through McKinleyville is a flat, scenic walk perfect for after-dinner strolls. Note that dogs are not allowed on most trails inside Redwood National and State Parks, but they're welcome at campgrounds, picnic areas, and paved pullouts on a 6-foot leash. Pro tip: ask your host about any pet fee at booking, then pack a towel for sandy paws. Many Fieldbrook-area hosts are pet owners themselves.
nps.gov/redw/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Humboldt County?
Yes, RV delivery in Fieldbrook is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-time renters who don't want to drive a motorhome on Highway 101. Many local hosts will deliver to nearby campgrounds like Clam Beach County Park, Mad River Rapids RV Park in Arcata, or Sue-meg State Park in Trinidad, set the RV up on your site, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. You just show up with your gear and groceries. Use the Delivery filter when searching, then message hosts to confirm distance fees, which typically run $2 to $5 per mile beyond a free radius. Pro tip: delivery to Patrick's Point/Sue-meg means you wake up to ocean cliffs and tide pools without ever touching a steering wheel.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=417How far can I drive on an RV rental from Fieldbrook?
You can roam as far as your itinerary allows. Many Fieldbrook hosts include generous daily mileage (often 100 to 150 free miles per day), and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer road trips. The mileage policy is shown right on each listing, so there are no surprises at booking. From Fieldbrook you're perfectly positioned: Redwood National Park's Prairie Creek section is about 35 miles north, the Avenue of the Giants is roughly 70 miles south, Crescent City sits 75 miles up Highway 101, and Crater Lake National Park in Oregon is around 290 miles. Pro tip: if you're planning a long RV road trip from Fieldbrook up the Oregon Coast, sort listings by mileage allowance first, then message your top picks to ask about an unlimited-miles add-on.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fieldbrook%2C%20CaliforniaWhere are the best campgrounds near Fieldbrook for an RV?
You're spoiled for choice. Some of the best campgrounds near Fieldbrook include Clam Beach County Park (about 7 miles away, oceanfront sites with dump station), Mad River Rapids RV Park in Arcata (full hookups, easy Highway 101 access, about 10 miles south), Sue-meg State Park near Trinidad (clifftop ocean views, roughly 18 miles north), Elk Country RV Resort & Campground in Trinidad (full hookups, redwoods nearby), and Emerald Forest of Trinidad (cabins and RV sites tucked among the trees). For pure redwood immersion, Elk Prairie Campground in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park (about 45 miles north) is unbeatable. Pro tip: state park sites book up six months out for summer weekends, so reserve at ReserveCalifornia as soon as your dates are locked.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=417When is the best time to visit Fieldbrook in an RV?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Fieldbrook is late May through early October, when daytime highs sit in a comfortable 60 to 70°F range and rain is rare. July, August, and September are the driest and sunniest months, perfect for redwood hikes and beach days at Moonstone or Trinidad State Beach. Spring (April-May) brings rhododendron blooms in the redwoods and far fewer crowds, while October offers gorgeous golden light and quieter campgrounds. Winters are mild but very wet, with 50 to 60°F days and frequent rain, so RVs with good heaters can absolutely make it work for cozy off-season trips. Pro tip: coastal fog can linger until noon in summer, so plan inland redwood hikes for mornings and save the beaches for sunny afternoons.
weather.gov/eka/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Fieldbrook?
You'll be in great shape. First time renting an RV in Fieldbrook is genuinely easier than it looks because every host gives a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, the propane system, dumping, and the generator. Local roads are well-suited to beginners: Highway 101 through Humboldt County is a wide divided highway with generous shoulders, and Fieldbrook Road itself is quiet and rural. The main thing to watch is the narrow, twisty Avenue of the Giants (35 mph max) and a few low-clearance redwood drive-throughs you'll want to avoid in taller rigs. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or a travel trailer under 25 feet for your first trip. They handle like a large van and fit nearly every campsite on the Redwood Coast.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What if I break down during my Fieldbrook RV trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 101 or a dead battery at a Trinidad pullout is just a phone call away from help. The roadside team can dispatch tire service, jump-starts, fuel delivery, lockout help, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. Cell coverage is reliable along the Highway 101 corridor through Fieldbrook, Arcata, and Eureka, though it can drop inside the deep redwood groves. Pro tip: download offline Google Maps for the Fieldbrook-to-Crescent City stretch before you leave, and save the RVezy support number and your host's number to your phone's favorites so you can reach them in seconds.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Fieldbrook RV rental into Oregon or other states?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals, and the Oregon border is only about 95 miles north of Fieldbrook on Highway 101. Many guests pair Humboldt with stops at Brookings, the Oregon Dunes, or even Crater Lake. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy booking because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Travel to Canada may be allowed but requires explicit approval from your host. Just message the host through the listing before you book to confirm your route. Popular RV road trips from Fieldbrook include the Pacific Coast Highway south to San Francisco (270 miles), the Oregon Coast north to Cannon Beach (445 miles), and an inland loop through Lassen Volcanic National Park (260 miles). Pro tip: fuel is noticeably cheaper in Oregon, so top up just over the border.
oregon.gov/odot/pages/index.aspxWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Plan smart and you'll be just fine. Most Class C motorhomes around Fieldbrook get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans get 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers add roughly 2 to 4 MPG of drag to your tow vehicle. California gas prices on the North Coast typically run higher than the national average, so budget around $5 per gallon as a working number. For a typical 4-night Humboldt loop covering 300 miles in a Class C, expect to spend $125 to $175 on fuel. Pro tip: the Costco in Eureka (about 20 minutes south of Fieldbrook) consistently has the cheapest diesel and gasoline in the region, so plan to fuel up there before heading north toward Redwood National Park.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Fieldbrook?
For peak summer (June through August) and holiday weekends, reserve six months ahead through ReserveCalifornia.com for state parks like Sue-meg, Patrick's Point, Prairie Creek, and Humboldt Redwoods. Six months is the maximum booking window and popular sites fill within minutes of the window opening at 8 a.m. Pacific. Humboldt County Parks (Clam Beach, Big Lagoon, Mad River Beach) can be booked through humboldtgov.org and are usually easier to grab 4 to 8 weeks out. Private RV parks like Mad River Rapids and Emerald Forest typically have more flexibility, often 2 to 4 weeks ahead. Pro tip: for last-minute Fieldbrook RV trips, target Sunday through Thursday arrivals. Midweek availability is dramatically better and several state park sites open up from cancellations the morning of.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Fieldbrook?
Driving conditions around Fieldbrook are friendlier than most coastal California areas. Highway 101 is a smooth four-lane corridor through Arcata, Eureka, and McKinleyville with easy lane changes for motorhomes. Fieldbrook Road and the back routes to Blue Lake are paved, two-lane, and quiet. The trickier sections are the Avenue of the Giants (narrow with low branches), Highway 299 east toward Redding (steep and curvy through the Trinity Mountains), and Bald Hills Road into Redwood National Park (gravel sections, not for big rigs). Coastal fog can reduce visibility on summer mornings, and winter storms occasionally drop tree limbs on rural roads. Pro tip: check QuickMap from Caltrans before any inland drive. The Highway 299 conditions can change quickly in winter and it's the fastest route to the Sacramento Valley.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities do Humboldt County campgrounds have for RVs?
Local campgrounds offer a healthy mix to match any RV setup. Full-hookup parks (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer) include Mad River Rapids RV Park in Arcata, Emerald Forest in Trinidad, and Shoreline RV Park in Eureka. State parks like Sue-meg and Prairie Creek offer developed sites with potable water and flush toilets but no individual hookups, with dump stations on-site. Free or low-cost RV dumps are available at the Eureka Wastewater Treatment Plant and several Flying J/Pilot stations along Highway 101. Potable water fill-ups are easy at any full-hookup park or dump station. Pro tip: if you're staying at a state park without hookups, top off fresh water before arrival and conserve through your trip. A standard 40-gallon tank typically lasts a family of four about 3 days with normal use.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=21992What features come standard in a motorhome rental Fieldbrook?
You'll be impressed by how well-equipped these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in Fieldbrook includes a queen or king bed, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), an indoor bathroom with hot shower, climate control (furnace and roof AC), a dinette that converts to extra sleeping, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Most Class C rentals sleep 4 to 6, Class A rigs sleep 6 to 8, and travel trailers vary widely. Many hosts include a generator (great for boondocking near the Mad River), outdoor camp chairs, a propane grill, and basic kitchen kits. TVs and onboard Wi-Fi are common but not guaranteed, so check the listing's amenities tab. Pro tip: cell signal is solid in Fieldbrook itself, so a hotspot from your phone works great for streaming around the campfire.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/393.93What add-ons and pickup options are common for a campervan rental Fieldbrook?
Campervan rental Fieldbrook listings often come with terrific add-ons that make trip prep easy. Popular extras include linen and bedding packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), outdoor furniture, generators, bike racks, paddleboards, and propane top-offs. Pickup is usually at the host's home (often in Fieldbrook, McKinleyville, or Arcata), though many hosts offer delivery to Arcata-Eureka Airport (ACV), nearby campgrounds, or vacation rentals for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary, with most listings including 100 to 150 free miles per day and overage fees of $0.30 to $0.50 per mile. Pro tip: bundling delivery plus a setup add-on is often cheaper than renting a car at ACV and driving the RV yourself, especially if you're flying in for a Redwood Coast trip and want zero hassle on day one.
flyacv.com/How does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Fieldbrook?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through RVezy. You pay your trip total (rental cost, protection plan, taxes, and any add-ons) by credit or debit card at booking, with no cash or side payments to the host. The refundable security deposit is separate from your booking payment and placed as a hold on your card before pickup, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV's value. It's released after the trip once the RV is returned clean, undamaged, and on time. Keeping your booking inside the RVezy messaging and payment system is also what keeps your protection plan active. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos of the RV's exterior, interior, and odometer at pickup and return so your full deposit comes right back.
