Campgrounds and RV parks near Hawthorne, CA

From a Hawthorne base, day trips fan out in every direction. The Pacific is minutes west: Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Redondo Beach all sit along the same stretch of sand. The Marvin Braude Bike Trail runs 22 miles along the coast and links Dockweiler to Venice, Santa Monica, and Marina del Rey. Inland, Griffith Park offers hiking, the Griffith Observatory, and the LA Zoo. Malibu Creek State Park has trails for hiking, biking, rock climbing, and bird watching, plus the former M*A*S*H filming site. Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area extends from Hollywood to Point Mugu with hundreds of miles of trail. Theme parks including Disneyland and Universal Studios are within roughly an hour by freeway.

Coastal Southern California is a year-round camping region, but conditions vary more than the postcard suggests. Winter is the wet season: most annual rainfall arrives between November and April, and atmospheric rivers can deliver heavy downpours over a few days. Temperatures stay mild, rarely dropping near freezing at sea level, but Pacific storms can close coastal roads and force evacuations in burn-scar areas of the Santa Monica Mountains. Spring brings drying trails, wildflower blooms in the Santa Monicas, and the best balance of mild weather and lower crowds. Summer is peak booking season. Beachfront sites at Dockweiler and state park sites in Malibu fill at the booking-window opening, and weekday stays are easier to land than weekends. June and early July often bring marine layer fog along the coast that burns off by midday. Fall is warm, dry, and frequently the highest fire-risk period, driven by Santa Ana winds from September into November. Check fire-restriction status with the relevant agency before any inland trip during this window.

Sites in the immediate Hawthorne area are urban and utilitarian rather than scenic. Most are paved or graveled lots with full hookups, laundry, and showers, and many cater heavily to monthly residents alongside short-stay travelers. Expect tight spacing, freeway noise, and limited shade. Coastal options like Dockweiler trade trees and privacy for ocean views and direct beach access; sites are arranged in rows parking-lot style, and aircraft noise from LAX is constant overhead. State park campgrounds in Malibu offer more traditional camping under sycamores with shorter site length limits, so verify rig fit before booking. Cell coverage is strong across the basin and most of the coast, weaker in canyons. Pets are usually allowed in campgrounds but restricted from most state beaches and trails.
