Campgrounds near Hoopa, California
Hoopa sits in the Trinity River canyon of inland Humboldt County, on the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation. The town is roughly an hour inland from the Pacific coast and serves as a practical base for trips into the Six Rivers National Forest, the Trinity Alps, and the redwood parks to the west. RV travellers come here for river access, salmon and steelhead fishing, and quiet sites under oak and conifer cover.
The closest campground in town is Tish Tang - Hoopah Valley Indian, a tribally operated site on a bench above the Trinity River. Klamath Riverside RV Park sits on the lower Klamath River to the north, with hookup sites suited to larger rigs. Heart of the Redwoods Cottages & RV and Elk Country RV Resort and Campground lie west toward the coast, offering full-service hookups closer to the redwood groves. Redwood National and State Parks, about a two-hour drive west, manages a string of developed and primitive campgrounds along the coast.
Things to do near Hoopa
The Trinity River is the centre of recreation. Summer brings swimming, tubing, and flatwater kayaking on slow stretches, while fall and winter draw anglers chasing salmon and steelhead runs. The Hoopa Tribal Museum in the town centre covers Hupa basketry, regalia, and tribal history. Hikers can reach Six Rivers National Forest trails and the Bigfoot Scenic Byway corridor within a short drive. To the west, Redwood National and State Parks hold old-growth groves, Roosevelt elk herds at Elk Prairie, and Fern Canyon. Drives east on State Route 299 reach Willow Creek and the Trinity Alps Wilderness. Black bears and ospreys are common along the river corridor, so families with kids should plan for wildlife sightings and pack bear-aware food storage.

December - February
48° / 32°F 170 mmWettest season; storms close roads and some parks
Summer is the prime RV window. June through early September brings warm, dry days, with August highs commonly in the mid-80s Fahrenheit and cool river-canyon nights. This is the busiest stretch for tribal and state-park campgrounds, and reservable redwood-park sites along the coast often fill weeks ahead. Wildfire smoke from inland Klamath and Trinity fires can drift into the valley during late summer, so check current air-quality and fire-closure notices before travel.
Spring runs cool and green with steady rain into May; wildflowers and high river flows are the trade-off for muddy gravel roads. Fall is the sweet spot for anglers, with clearing rivers, lighter crowds, and steelhead returning. Winter is wet and quiet. The lower river canyon rarely sees deep snow, but Pacific storms deliver heavy rain, road closures on State Route 299, and reduced services at private parks. Some seasonal campgrounds close from late autumn through spring.
How to book a campsite near Hoopa
Tish Tang - Hoopah Valley Indian is operated by the Hoopa Valley Tribe and is booked by phone through Hoopa Tribal Forestry rather than a national reservation system. Call ahead, especially for summer weekends and the fall salmon run, and confirm rig length limits since most sites suit RVs up to about 30 feet. Privately run parks like Klamath Riverside RV Park, Heart of the Redwoods Cottages & RV, and Elk Country RV Resort and Campground take bookings directly on their websites or by phone, with full hookups available. Coastal sites inside Redwood National and State Parks, including Jedediah Smith, Mill Creek, Elk Prairie, and Gold Bluffs Beach, are managed jointly by the National Park Service and California State Parks and are reserved through ReserveCalifornia. Summer dates open on a rolling six-month window and the most popular weekends sell out within minutes.
What to expect in Hoopa
Hoopa is rural. The town has a small grocery, fuel, and a tribal-run market, but selection is limited, so stock up in Arcata or Eureka before heading inland on State Route 299. The drive in includes tight switchbacks and a few sharp grades; large fifth wheels and Class A motorhomes should plan extra time. Cell coverage drops in and out across the canyon and is often poor at riverside campgrounds. Sites at Tish Tang - Hoopah Valley Indian are shaded but rustic, with vault toilets and limited hookups; expect quiet nights and dark skies. Black bears are present, so use bear boxes or sealed storage and keep coolers inside the rig. Visitors are on tribal land, so follow posted rules on alcohol, fishing permits, and photography of cultural sites.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Hoopa, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Hoopa, CA?
RV rental in Hoopa is surprisingly affordable for such a remote, redwood-wrapped corner of Northern California. On RVezy, travel trailers typically run $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes average $175 to $275, and luxury Class A rigs land around $250 to $400. Because Hoopa sits deep in the Klamath and Trinity river country, hosts often base out of nearby Willow Creek, Arcata, or Eureka, which keeps pricing competitive. For a cheap RV rental Hoopa travelers love, book midweek or in the shoulder months of April, May, and October when nightly rates can drop 15 to 25 percent. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book listings and bundle add-ons like camp chairs or a generator to save on separate rentals.
visithumboldt.com/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Hoopa?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Hoopa, CA. California does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for motorhomes and trailers under 40 feet, which covers nearly every rig on RVezy. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified right inside the platform during booking so there's no paperwork shuffle at pickup. Visiting from overseas? Bring your home country license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters in the Hoopa Valley are surprised at how quickly they go from booking to driving the Bigfoot Scenic Byway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental in Hoopa, CA covered by insurance and roadside help?
Every RVezy booking in Hoopa includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive into Six Rivers National Forest with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV, which matters on Highway 96's twisty river canyon stretches where a low branch or stray rock isn't unheard of. You choose your coverage level during checkout, not the host, so you can match the protection to your comfort. If you get a flat outside Willow Creek or need a battery jump near Tish Tang, one phone call gets help dispatched. Together, the protection plan and roadside coverage give your Hoopa RV trip serious financial backup.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Hoopa RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets a clear cancellation policy on every reservation, including a grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Cancellation terms depend on how far out you are from your trip start date, which matters in Humboldt County where winter storms occasionally affect Highway 299 or Highway 96. Because RVezy (not the individual host) manages the cancellation policy, the rules are consistent across listings. If your host needs to cancel, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credit so your plans aren't left hanging. If something changes on your side, contact RVezy support and they'll walk you through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip to Hoopa?
Absolutely, and the Trinity and Klamath river country is paradise for four-legged travelers. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to find a pet-friendly RV rental Hoopa hosts have pre-approved for dogs, so there's no awkward back-and-forth. Once you're here, dogs are welcome on leash at Tish Tang Campground along the Trinity River, on many Six Rivers National Forest trails, and at the broad gravel bars near Hoopa where pups love to splash. Bring a long line, plenty of water, and tick prevention since the oak woodlands can be buggy in spring. Pro tip: the Willow Creek Veterinary Clinic, 12 miles south on Highway 96, is the closest vet if you need anything mid-trip.
fs.usda.gov/srnfCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Hoopa?
Yes, RV delivery Hoopa renters love is offered by many RVezy hosts based in Willow Creek, Arcata, Eureka, and McKinleyville. They'll drive the rig to your campground, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through everything from the propane stove to the awning before handing over the keys. This is hands-down the easiest way to start a Hoopa RV trip if it's your first time, you flew into Arcata-Eureka Airport (ACV), or you'd rather skip driving Highway 299's mountain curves. Filter listings by Delivery on RVezy, then message the host with your campsite name (like Tish Tang or Boise Creek) to confirm the fee, which usually scales with distance.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/srnf/recreation/camping-cabins/recarea/?recid=10672&actid=29How far can I drive on an RV rental from Hoopa?
Plenty far, and Hoopa is an incredible launchpad for a Northern California loop. Most RVezy hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold for big itineraries. From Hoopa you're 38 miles to Arcata, 60 miles to Redwood National Park, 90 miles to the Oregon border at Crescent City, 140 miles to the Trinity Alps Wilderness, and about 290 miles to Lassen Volcanic National Park. Check the mileage policy in the listing summary before booking, and message the host if you're planning a longer loop. Pro tip: an RV road trip from Hoopa down the Lost Coast through Ferndale is one of California's most underrated drives.
nps.gov/redw/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Hoopa, CA?
You're spoiled for choice when RV camping Hoopa style. Tish Tang Campground, run by the Hoopa Valley Tribe right along the Trinity River, is the closest option and has 40 sites with vault toilets, river access, and gravel bar swimming. Boise Creek Campground in Six Rivers National Forest, about 13 miles south near Willow Creek, offers shaded sites with potable water and a friendly camp host. Aikens Creek West Campground sits along the Klamath River 20 miles up Highway 96 and is a favorite for rafters. For full hookups, head 60 miles west to Mad River Rapids RV Park in Arcata. Pro tip: cell service is spotty in the valley, so download maps before you leave Arcata.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/srnf/recreation/camping-cabins/recarea/?recid=10672When is the best time of year for a Hoopa RV trip?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for RV camping Hoopa. Summer days from June to August are warm and dry with highs of 80 to 95 F (27 to 35 C) and crisp nights in the 45 to 55 F (7 to 13 C) range, ideal for river swimming on the Trinity. September and October bring fewer crowds, salmon runs on the Klamath, and golden oak hillsides. Winters are wet and cool, with highs around 47 to 51 F (8 to 11 C), heavy rain, and occasional snow on the surrounding ridges, beautiful but slick. Spring is lush and green but rivers run high and cold. For a first time renting an RV adventure here, aim for July or August.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=41.0477&lon=-123.6713I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay in Hoopa?
You've got this, and Hoopa is actually a friendly place to learn. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering the dashboard, brakes, propane, water tanks, and awning so you're not guessing on the road. If you're nervous about Highway 299 from Arcata, which has steep grades and curves climbing over Berry Summit, ask the host about delivery so the rig is waiting at your campsite. Once you're in the Hoopa Valley itself, the roads flatten out along the Trinity River and traffic is light. Pro tip: start with a Class C motorhome rental Hoopa size, around 25 feet, since it drives much like a large truck and tucks easily into Tish Tang sites.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/road-informationWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
Help is one phone call away. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and tow needs are all covered no matter where you are between Hoopa and the redwoods. The nearest service hubs are Willow Creek (12 miles south) and Arcata (38 miles west), so response times in the valley are reasonable for such a rural area. Your host is also a real person you can message directly through the RVezy app, which is great for quick questions like how to relight the water heater. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before leaving cell range past Weitchpec.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Hoopa RV rental to Oregon or across state lines?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals, and Hoopa is a fantastic jumping-off point. From here it's about 110 miles north on Highway 199 to Grants Pass, Oregon, or you can loop east through Redding and up to Crater Lake. Just message the host before booking to confirm Oregon or Nevada are okay, since a few owners cap travel to California only. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy because insurance and protection coverage end at the border. Cross-border trips to Canada may be allowed with host approval. Pro tip: a popular RV road trip from Hoopa is the Redwood Coast loop, hugging Highway 101 from Crescent City down through Trinidad and Eureka.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Hoopa RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in any California RV budget, but Hoopa trips are short-distance and scenic, which keeps things manageable. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A coaches run 6 to 10 mpg. California gas prices in Humboldt County typically run $4.80 to $5.50 per gallon, with the cheapest stations in Arcata and McKinleyville and the priciest at the lone Hoopa Shell. A round trip from Arcata to Hoopa and back, plus exploring nearby Trinity and Klamath river areas, usually burns 30 to 50 gallons. Pro tip: top up in Arcata before heading east on Highway 299, you'll save real money.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-gasoline-data-facts-and-statisticsHow far in advance should I book a campground near Hoopa?
Earlier is better, but Hoopa is less crowded than Yosemite or Big Sur, which is part of its charm. For Six Rivers National Forest campgrounds like Boise Creek and Aikens Creek, reservations open six months ahead on Recreation.gov and fill up for July and August holiday weekends. Tish Tang Campground is run by the Hoopa Valley Tribe and is mostly first-come, first-served, so arrive by Thursday for a summer weekend site. For full-hookup parks in Arcata and Trinidad, aim to book two to three months out in summer. Pro tip: midweek arrivals almost always score the best riverside sites, and a quick call to the campground confirms what online maps can't show.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2779What are the local driving conditions like around Hoopa?
Hoopa driving is gorgeous but mountainous, so a little prep goes a long way. Highway 299 from Arcata climbs over Berry Summit (2,859 feet) with sharp curves, and Highway 96 north from Willow Creek to Hoopa hugs the Trinity River with narrow shoulders and occasional rockfall. Traffic is light, but watch for logging trucks, deer at dawn and dusk, and the occasional black bear crossing. In winter, chain controls can pop up on 299 during storms. Cell service drops between Willow Creek and Hoopa, and is patchy north toward Weitchpec. Pro tip: drive these roads in daylight your first time, take it easy at 35 to 45 mph, and pull out at the Trinity River viewpoints, the scenery is half the fun.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Hoopa?
Expect rustic charm rather than resort polish, and that's exactly why people love RV camping Hoopa. Tish Tang and most Six Rivers National Forest campgrounds offer vault toilets, potable water spigots, picnic tables, and fire rings, but no electrical or sewer hookups. For full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer), head to Mad River Rapids RV Park in Arcata or Emerald Forest in Trinidad. The nearest reliable RV dump station and fresh water fill is in Willow Creek along Highway 299, about 12 miles south of Hoopa. Pro tip: if you're staying at a forest service site, fill your fresh tank in Willow Creek before heading north and your generator becomes your best friend for evening lights.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/srnf/recreation/camping-cabins/recarea/?recid=10672&actid=29What's actually inside an RV I rent for Hoopa?
More than you'd expect. Most motorhome rental Hoopa options on RVezy come fully equipped with a real bed (queen or king), a kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, dining table, climate control, and seatbelted seating for the crew. Class C and Class A rigs usually include a TV and many have a generator, which is essential since most Hoopa-area campgrounds are dry (no hookups). Campervan rental Hoopa options like Class B Sprinters are more compact but still include a bed, kitchenette, and often a wet bath. Pro tip: check the listing for solar panels and battery capacity, they make a huge difference for off-grid nights at Tish Tang or Aikens Creek.
fs.usda.gov/srnfWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect?
RVezy hosts in the Hoopa region make trips easy with a generous menu of add-ons: bedding and linen kits ($25 to $75), kitchen packages, camp chairs and tables, generators ($25 to $50 per day), bikes, kayaks, and even Starlink for off-grid Wi-Fi. Pickup is usually at the host's home base in Willow Creek, Arcata, or Eureka, with most offering after-hours key handoff if your flight into Arcata-Eureka Airport (ACV) lands late. Mileage policies vary, with 100 free miles per night being common and unlimited mileage available on some listings. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a generator plus a fresh-water fill, and you'll roll into Tish Tang fully set up to relax by the Trinity within minutes.
flyacv.com/How do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and fully handled inside RVezy, so there's no cash or side deals with the host. You pay your booking total by credit card when you reserve, and your security deposit is processed separately as a pre-authorization hold on your card before pickup, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig. As long as you return the RV on time, clean, with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and undamaged, that hold is released after your trip. Document the rig at pickup and dropoff with a quick video, especially the exterior, since Hoopa's gravel roads can kick up dust. Pro tip: keep all communication on the RVezy app so everything is logged for both sides.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the top road trip destinations from Hoopa?
Hoopa sits in the middle of some of California's most jaw-dropping country. Top RV road trip from Hoopa picks: Redwood National and State Parks (60 miles west, towering old-growth groves at Lady Bird Johnson Grove), Trinity Alps Wilderness via Weaverville (90 miles east, alpine lakes and rivers), the Lost Coast through Ferndale and the Mattole Road (130 miles south, no other coastline like it), Crater Lake National Park in Oregon (260 miles north), and Lassen Volcanic National Park (290 miles east). Locally, don't miss the Bigfoot Scenic Byway along Highway 96, the Hoopa Tribal Museum, and gravel-bar swimming holes along the Trinity. Pro tip: a family RV trip Hoopa loop of Redwoods plus Trinity River makes for a perfect 5 to 7 day itinerary.
