Campgrounds near Jacumba
Jacumba Hot Springs sits in southeastern San Diego County at roughly 2,800 feet of elevation, in the Mountain Empire area along old Highway 80 just off Interstate 8. The town is small and unincorporated, with the 2020 census recording a population of 540. For RV travelers, it functions as a quiet high-desert base between the Cleveland National Forest to the west and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park to the north and east.
Full-hookup options closest to town include DeAnza Springs Resort and the clothing-optional DeAnza Springs Resort Clothing Optional, set on more than 500 acres bordered on three sides by Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. A few miles west in Boulevard, the Boulevard / Cleveland National Forest KOA Holiday offers a more conventional KOA setup with tent and RV sites near hiking access. Egg Hill Bow Willow Rd provides primitive desert camping toward the Bow Willow area, while Oakzanita Springs RV Campground, a Thousand Trails property in Descanso, sits farther west at about 4,000 feet near Cuyamaca Rancho State Park.
Things to do near Jacumba
The main draws are soaking, stargazing, and desert hiking. The town itself centers on natural hot springs, and the surrounding In-Ko-Pah and Jacumba mountains hold boulder fields, slot canyons, and a section of the Pacific Crest Trail. The Desert View Tower along Interstate 8 is a short drive east and offers wide views over the Imperial Valley. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, immediately north, is an International Dark Sky Park with bighorn sheep, slot canyons, and the Goat Canyon Trestle hike. To the west, Cleveland National Forest and Lake Morena add pine country, fishing, and cooler hiking. Families often add the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo and seasonal apple picking and pie shops in Julian to the trip.

December - February
59° / 36°F 55 mmMild days, near-freezing nights; wettest season
Jacumba follows the standard Southern California desert pattern, with comfortable shoulder seasons and a harsh summer peak. Spring, from March through May, is the busiest window: daytime highs are typically in the 70s, wildflowers bloom in Anza-Borrego when winter rainfall has been sufficient, and reservable state-park campgrounds book out months ahead. Fall, from late September into November, brings similar temperatures with fewer crowds and is widely considered the most reliable time for an RV trip.
Summer is hot. July and August daytime highs commonly reach the low 90s, and the North American monsoon can produce isolated thunderstorms and flash flooding in desert washes. Many primitive desert sites stay open year-round but see little use in this window. Winter is mild at Jacumba's elevation, with daytime highs near 60 and overnight lows that can drop near freezing. February is typically the wettest month, and Pacific storms occasionally bring brief snow to higher elevations in the Lagunas.
How to book
Reservations in the Jacumba area split between private resorts and the California State Parks system. Private parks, including DeAnza Springs Resort, DeAnza Springs Resort Clothing Optional, Boulevard / Cleveland National Forest KOA Holiday, and Oakzanita Springs RV Campground, are booked directly through each operator's website or phone line, with the KOA also available through the KOA reservation system and Oakzanita through Thousand Trails. Plan ahead for spring weekends and major holidays.
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park developed campgrounds, the closest reservable public option, use ReserveCalifornia. Borrego Palm Canyon, Tamarisk Grove, and Vern Whitaker Horse Camp accept reservations from October 1 through April 30, released in a rolling six-month window. Bow Willow remains first-come, first-served. Primitive Bureau of Land Management sites in McCain Valley, such as Lark Canyon and Cottonwood, are also first-come, first-served.
What to expect
Expect a rural, high-desert setting with strong sun, low humidity, and very dark night skies. Cell service is inconsistent once off Interstate 8, and the nearest full-service grocery is back toward Alpine or in El Centro to the east, so RV renters should provision before arrival. Roads into McCain Valley and the southern reaches of Anza-Borrego are partly unpaved and may be rough after storms; sedan-style tow vehicles can struggle. Wildlife in the area includes rattlesnakes, coyotes, tarantulas, and the occasional bighorn sheep, so keep pets leashed and food secured. Fire restrictions are common from late spring through fall, and open fires are periodically banned at Anza-Borrego's primitive campgrounds and backcountry sites during extreme fire danger. Carry extra drinking water in any season.

fs.usda.gov/recarea/cleveland/recarea/?recid=80591When is the best time to visit Jacumba in an RV?
The best window to rent an RV in Jacumba is October through May, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 60s to mid-80s°F and nights cool to the 40s and 50s, perfect for soaking in hot springs under famously dark, star-filled skies. Jacumba sits at about 2,800 feet elevation and has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, so July through early September can push past 100°F. Pro tip: plan your trip around a new moon for some of the most jaw-dropping Milky Way viewing in Southern California.
weather.gov/sgx/I've never rented an RV before, is Jacumba a good place to start?
Jacumba is one of the easier first time renting an RV destinations in California. Traffic is light, campgrounds like DeAnza Springs have pull-through sites that don't require backing in, and elevations are gentle compared to mountain destinations farther north. Your RVezy host will walk you through every system at pickup, propane, slides, water, generator, and dump valves, and you can message them anytime during your trip with questions. If even that feels like a lot, choose a host who offers delivery and setup so you can step into a fully-ready RV. Pro tip: book a campervan rental Jacumba travelers love for your first try, they drive almost like a tall minivan.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Jacumba%2C%20CaliforniaWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on the In-Ko-Pah Park Road, lose power at a remote site near Mortero Palms, or have a mechanical issue climbing back up the Mountain Springs Grade on I-8, help is one call away. Your host is also a direct line, most know their rig's quirks intimately and can troubleshoot via message in minutes. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center and phone line. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your contacts before leaving Jacumba, cell service drops in some canyon stretches.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RVezy rental across the border into Mexico from Jacumba?
Jacumba sits right against the US-Mexico border, but travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage and roadside assistance do not extend across the border. The good news: there's plenty of border-adjacent adventure on the US side, the Jacumba Mountains Wilderness, Carrizo Gorge, and the historic Goat Canyon Trestle are all within reach. You can cross into Arizona or other US states on a Jacumba RV trip, just confirm any state-specific mileage rules with your host first. Pro tip: drive about 45 minutes east to Ocotillo for big-sky desert sunsets that rival anything south of the border.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Jacumba RV trip?
Realistic fuel budgeting makes the difference between a great trip and a stressful one. Class C motorhomes near Jacumba typically get 8 to 10 mpg, Class B campervans 16 to 20 mpg, and a truck towing a travel trailer about 10 to 14 mpg. California gas prices run higher than the national average, expect around $4.50 to $5.20 per gallon in the Jacumba area in 2026. The closest reliable fueling stops are in Jacumba itself, Ocotillo (15 miles east on I-8), and Boulevard (10 miles west). Pro tip: top off in Ocotillo before heading into Imperial County, where prices often drop, then refill in El Cajon on your way back toward San Diego.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book campgrounds around Jacumba?
For private parks like DeAnza Springs Resort, booking 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually fine outside of peak events. For California State Parks like Anza-Borrego's Borrego Palm Canyon or Tamarisk Grove, reserve through ReserveCalifornia up to 6 months in advance, spring wildflower weekends sell out within hours of the booking window opening. San Diego County campgrounds like Lake Morena are reservable through the county's online system about 3 months out. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have availability even in peak season, and many Jacumba RVezy hosts can deliver to whichever campground you snag, so you can book the campsite first and the RV second.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the driving conditions like around Jacumba?
Driving around Jacumba is mostly easy, with one section to respect: the I-8 Mountain Springs Grade just west of town drops about 2,700 feet over 11 miles with grades up to 6%. Use lower gears descending (engine braking saves your brakes), and stay in the right lanes designated for trucks and RVs. East of Jacumba, I-8 is flat and fast all the way to Yuma. Watch for blowing sand and dust storms in summer between Ocotillo and El Centro, and high winds through Devil's Canyon, the Caltrans wind warnings on overhead signs are real. Pro tip: avoid driving the grade in the late afternoon when sun glare westbound can be intense.

For dumping and water fills, DeAnza Springs and Pine Valley both have dump stations open to non-guests for a small fee. Cell service is generally good in town and at DeAnza, spotty in canyons. Pro tip: fill fresh water in Jacumba before heading into Anza-Borrego, where potable water access is limited at backcountry sites.

Most RVs on RVezy come fully equipped for desert camping near Jacumba: a real bed (or two or three), a kitchen with fridge, stove, sink, and microwave, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, dinette seating with seatbelts, climate control, and house batteries for boondocking. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes often include a generator (great for running AC at boondocking sites), TVs, and sometimes solar. Travel trailers and fifth wheels offer more living space at lower nightly rates. WiFi varies, most hosts recommend bringing a hotspot since rural cell can be patchy near In-Ko-Pah. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and Air Conditioning when planning summer trips, AC is non-negotiable in desert heat.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Jacumba%2C%20CaliforniaWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Jacumba RV rental?
RVezy hosts in the Jacumba area offer all kinds of useful add-ons to upgrade your trip: delivery and setup (often the most popular), generator use, propane refills, linens and kitchen kits, bike racks, camping chairs and tables, portable grills, and extra mileage packages. Some hosts include these in the base rate, others charge a flat fee, you'll see everything itemized on the listing page before booking. Pickup is usually at the host's location in Jacumba, Boulevard, or nearby East County San Diego, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough. Pro tip: if you're heading deep into Anza-Borrego, add a portable solar panel or extra propane tank, off-grid days drain batteries faster than you'd think.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Jacumba%2C%20CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure: you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host. Your card is charged for the rental total, fees, and any add-ons you select. The security deposit is separate from the booking payment and is held as a pre-authorization on your card before pickup. Hold amounts typically range from $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV and are released after a smooth return, usually within a few days. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkthrough video at pickup and dropoff, return the RV with the agreed fuel and tank levels, and respect the mileage limit. Pro tip: communicate any small issue right away through the RVezy message thread for a clean record.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre RV rentals available year-round in Jacumba, including winter?
Yes, Jacumba is one of the best year-round RV destinations in Southern California, and winter is arguably the sweet spot. Daytime highs from December through February usually sit in the comfortable 60s°F, perfect for hiking and hot spring soaks, while crisp nights drop into the 30s and 40s, ideal for campfires. Snow is rare but possible at higher elevations nearby. Most RVezy rentals in the area come with furnaces, propane heat, and shore-power compatibility for plugging in at DeAnza Springs Resort. Pro tip: ask your host about the heated holding tanks and bring an extra blanket, then plan a winter Anza-Borrego day trip, the desert is at its most beautiful when the rest of the country is shoveling snow.
