Campgrounds and RV parks near Lake Los Angeles, CA

Saddleback Butte State Park preserves native Joshua Tree woodlands and other plants and animals that were once common throughout this high desert area. A summit trail climbs the butte for panoramic views of the Antelope Valley, and a self-guided nature trail near the campground is short enough for kids. The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, roughly an hour west, draws crowds in spring for one of the largest natural wildflower displays in the country. Edwards Air Force Base, Air Force Plant 42, and the Blackbird Airpark in Palmdale appeal to aviation-minded families. South of the valley, the East Fork of the San Gabriel River offers swimming holes, fishing, and gold panning, while the Angeles National Forest provides hiking and scenic drives along the Angeles Crest Highway.

Lake Los Angeles has a high-desert climate with cool winters, hot summers, and very little rain. Spring is the headline season. The ideal time to visit Saddleback Butte State Park is from February to May when the desert blooms with wildflowers, and autumn also offers pleasant temperatures, while summer brings hot days and cool, star-filled nights. March through May usually delivers the best mix of mild daytime temperatures and possible poppy blooms, though wildflower timing varies year to year with winter rainfall. Summer brings triple-digit afternoons. Desert weather and temperatures can change suddenly and fluctuate widely. Bring warm clothing and protection from extreme conditions. Wind is a constant in the Antelope Valley, especially in spring, and blowing dust can affect awnings and slide-outs. Winter days are often clear and mild, but overnight lows drop below freezing and occasional storms bring rain at valley elevation and snow on the surrounding mountains. Fall is quieter, with warm days, cool nights, and reliable stargazing.
