Most trips out of South Gate are built around Los Angeles and Orange County attractions rather than wilderness. Families often pair a stay with the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Knott's Berry Farm, Universal Studios Hollywood, and the beaches at Huntington and Long Beach. Downtown Long Beach is a short drive south and offers the Aquarium of the Pacific, Shoreline Village, and the Queen Mary. Surfing, swimming, and surf fishing for perch and corbina are accessible at Bolsa Chica State Beach, which also borders the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve for birdwatching.
