Alamosa East camping overview
Alamosa East sits in Colorado's San Luis Valley along US 160, within easy reach of Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, Colorado Gators Reptile Park, and the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad. The city of Alamosa itself is the commercial center of the San Luis Valley in south-central Colorado, home to Adams State University, with grocery, fuel, and RV services a short drive west, making it a practical staging point for dunes trips.
RV travelers have a range of nearby options. Cool Sunshine RV Park, LLC and San Luis Valley RV Resort sit close to Alamosa for full-hookup convenience, while Alamosa / Great Sand Dunes KOA Journey and Base Camp Family Campground put travelers closer to the park entrance. Ramble at Great Sand Dunes National Park is another private option in the dunes corridor.
From Alamosa East, the drive to the park follows US 160 east to Colorado 150 north. Piñon Flats Campground inside the park sits at 8,175 feet elevation beneath the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, so plan for high-altitude conditions at both the campground and the dunefield.
Things to do near Alamosa East
Great Sand Dunes National Park is the main draw. Most visitors come to hike and sled the tallest dunes in North America, with additional options for backpacking, hiking on forest and alpine trails, and splashing in Medano Creek at the base of the dunes in early summer. Sand sleds and sandboards are available to rent from outfitters outside the park; cardboard and snow sleds do not slide on dry sand.
Beyond the dunes, families can hike the short trail to Zapata Falls just south of the park off Highway 150, where a slippery half-mile hike leads to a 25-foot cascade with sweeping views of the San Luis Valley from the trailhead. San Luis State Wildlife Area at the park's western edge offers boating, sailing, windsurfing, and fishing on a large natural lake.
After dark, the park's designation as an International Dark Sky Park makes stargazing a headline activity, especially on moonless nights.

Peak visitation runs late spring through early fall. The park recommends making reservations in advance, especially for peak summer months from May through September. Medano Creek typically flows strongest in late May and June, drawing family crowds to the base of the dunes, and Piñon Flats Campground inside the park operates roughly April through October.
Summer afternoons bring monsoon thunderstorms to the San Luis Valley, so plan hikes and dune climbs for morning hours. The dune surface can reach dangerously hot temperatures on sunny summer afternoons, and shade is nonexistent on the dunefield. Fall shoulder season is drier and quieter, with cool nights and increasingly common frost.
Winter camping outside the park is possible but demanding. Alamosa averages 46 nights per year with lows at or below 0 °F, and many private campgrounds near the park reduce services or close between roughly October and April. The national park itself is open year-round with no timed entries, though snow and wind can affect access.
How to book campgrounds near Alamosa East
Private RV parks in the Alamosa area, including Cool Sunshine RV Park, LLC, Alamosa / Great Sand Dunes KOA Journey, Base Camp Family Campground, and San Luis Valley RV Resort, are booked directly through each operator's website or by phone. Ramble at Great Sand Dunes National Park also takes direct reservations through its own site. For summer weekends and holidays, book several months out.
For camping inside the national park, all 88 sites at Piñon Flats Campground are reservable through Recreation.gov, with individual sites bookable up to six months in advance either online or by phone. First-come, first-served camping is not available. Weekends in May, early June, and summer holidays can book out within minutes of the reservation window opening.
Due to the historic campground design, many sites are small and unlevel and may not accommodate larger modern rigs. Most sites cap at 25 feet, with some accommodating up to 35 feet. Review site photos and measurements carefully.
What to expect near Alamosa East
Expect high desert conditions at elevation. Days are often bright and dry with strong sun, and nights cool quickly even in summer. Bring layers, sun protection, and more water than seems necessary. Wind on the dunefield can drive sand into gear, so pack accordingly.
Cell service is limited near the park. Coverage is spotty at best; some carriers work near the Visitor Center and parking areas, but reliable service should not be expected. Download maps and reservations before leaving Alamosa.
RV travelers should note site constraints inside the park, where there are no hookups but potable water, flush toilets, and dishwashing sinks are available. Confirm hookup availability at private campgrounds in advance. Dogs are allowed in developed areas of the park including parking lots, roads, Piñon Flats Campground, and the main dunefield, but not on hiking trails or in the backcountry.
