Campgrounds and RV parks near La Veta, CO

The Highway of Legends Scenic Byway leaves right from La Veta and climbs through Cuchara and over the Sangre de Cristos, a natural half-day loop from any of the in-town RV parks. Hiking, trout fishing in the Cuchara River, and mountain biking are the core outdoor draws, and Great Sand Dunes National Park is about an hour's drive away. Lathrop State Park, roughly 20 minutes east, is built for family days out. It has two lakes, Martin and Horseshoe, and is the only Colorado state park that adjoins a golf course, with a swim beach, boating, fishing for bass, trout, and catfish, and trails around Martin Lake. In town, families can walk to shops, galleries, the Francisco Fort Museum, and local restaurants without moving the RV.

The core RV season runs late spring through mid-fall. Private parks in town open on staggered schedules: La Veta Pines and Circle The Wagons operate as seasonal parks from spring through late October, while Sammie's Campground stays open all year. Summer brings warm days, cool nights at 7,000 feet, and the region's most reliable weather for hiking and lake use, though July is the wettest month and afternoon thunderstorms are routine. September and early October are prime for fall color along the Highway of Legends, with lighter crowds after Labor Day. Bookings tighten around July 4, weekend festivals, and Spanish Peaks music events, so plan several weeks out for summer stays. Winter is quiet. Lathrop State Park stays open year-round, but expect snow, freezing overnight lows, and wind exposure at the more open state park sites. Some private in-town parks close or reduce services for the cold months. Winter travelers should confirm water availability before arrival, since some hookups are shut off when temperatures drop.

La Veta's in-town RV parks are small and walkable to downtown. Sites are typically back-in gravel pads with grass patios, full hookups, and 30 or 50 amp service. Cell coverage in town is generally usable and most parks offer WiFi. Deer wandering through campsites is common, and quiet hours are observed. At Yucca Campground in Lathrop State Park, expect a more exposed setting. Yucca is designed for smaller RVs and tents, with basic sites that lack individual electric hookups, along with drinking water spigots, vault toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables. A dump station is available in the park. Wind and highway noise from nearby US 160 can carry across the open sites. Mountain campgrounds off Highway 12 south of town are scenic but limited for larger rigs, with narrow dirt roads and switchbacks in some drainages. Fire restrictions are common in summer; verify current rules before arrival.
