Campgrounds near Silverton, Colorado
Silverton sits at roughly 9,318 feet in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado, along the US 550 corridor known as the Million Dollar Highway. RV travelers use it as a basecamp for high-alpine hiking, off-roading on the Alpine Loop, and rides on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The town's compact historic core is walkable from several in-town RV parks.
Camping options split into three groups: full-hookup RV parks in and just outside town, a town-run campground along Highway 550, and Forest Service and dispersed sites on San Juan National Forest land. In-town choices include Silver Summit RV Park And Jeep Rentals, Silverton Lakes RV Resort, and Red Mountain Motel and RV Park. Campfire Ranch Red Mountain Pass sits north of town on the pass itself, and Ouray Riverside Resort lies across the pass in Ouray, about an hour's drive when the highway is open.
Elevation and a short operating season shape most trip planning here. Expect cool nights year-round, limited cell service outside town, and very high demand for reservable sites from late June through September.
Things to do near Silverton
The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad turns around next to Silver Summit RV Park And Jeep Rentals, making walk-on boarding easy for guests staying in town. Jeep and side-by-side rentals are widely available in Silverton for driving the Alpine Loop, a backcountry byway linking Silverton, Lake City, and Ouray that requires a high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle.
Popular hikes include the Ice Lake Basin trail off South Mineral Creek and shorter routes off Molas Pass on the Colorado Trail. Anglers fish stocked lakes and the Animas River. The Old Hundred Gold Mine tour, mining museum, and downtown historic district add rainy-day options.
Across Red Mountain Pass, Ouray adds hot springs, Box Canyon Falls, and Bear Creek Falls, all reachable as a day trip when the highway is clear.

The Silverton RV season is short. Most in-town parks open around mid to late May and close in mid October, and higher-elevation sites open even later once snow clears. Silver Summit RV Park And Jeep Rentals typically operates roughly mid May through mid October. Town-run Molas Lake, on Highway 550 south of town, runs June 1 through September 30. Forest Service campgrounds along Mineral Creek and Molas Pass follow similar late-May to September windows depending on snowpack.
Summer weather is mild by day and cold at night given the elevation. Afternoon thunderstorms are routine in July and August, and the North American Monsoon brings the wettest stretch of the year to the San Juans in late summer. September delivers aspen color, cooler nights, and thinner crowds.
Winter closes most RV parks, and the Million Dollar Highway can shut without warning for avalanche control. Winter visitors typically shift to lodging rather than RV camping.
How to book
Private RV parks in Silverton, including Silver Summit RV Park And Jeep Rentals, Silverton Lakes RV Resort, and Red Mountain Motel and RV Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Campfire Ranch Red Mountain Pass and Ouray Riverside Resort also book direct. Full-hookup sites and pull-throughs sell out first, often eight or more weeks ahead for July and August weekends.
Molas Lake Park & Campground, run by the Town of Silverton, is reserved through its own booking site at molaslake.com, with reservations typically opening January 1 for the coming summer. South Mineral and other San Juan National Forest campgrounds in the immediate Silverton area are first-come, first-served rather than reservable on Recreation.gov, so arriving early on weekdays gives the best chance of a site.
Book peak-season stays well in advance, confirm your rig length against site limits, and check road-status pages before travel over Red Mountain Pass.
What to expect on the ground
Sites sit between roughly 9,000 and 11,000 feet. Expect cold nights, thin air, and the potential for generators and camp stoves to run rougher than at low elevation. Pack layers, rain gear, and a warm sleeping bag even in July.
Cell service is limited outside Silverton and Ouray. Full hookups, laundry, showers, and Wi-Fi are common at in-town parks, while Forest Service and dispersed sites typically offer vault toilets and no water or hookups. Molas Lake has no hookups and no on-site dump station; the nearest dump stations are in Silverton itself.
The Million Dollar Highway between Silverton and Ouray has narrow lanes, tight switchbacks, steep drop-offs, and no guardrails in places. Large motorhomes and long trailers should plan the route carefully, drive it in daylight and dry conditions, and consider entering Silverton from the Durango side instead.
