Campgrounds near Astor, Florida
Astor sits on the St. Johns River in central Florida, wedged between the eastern edge of the Ocala National Forest and Lake George, Florida's second-largest lake. The national forest spans four counties and 383,000 acres, and it is the southernmost and oldest national forest east of the Mississippi River, protecting the world's largest contiguous sand pine scrub forest. The town is a working river community with a long-standing fish-camp culture, not a resort destination.
RV travelers have two distinct options in the immediate area. Private riverside parks such as St Johns River Campground, Parramore's Campground, Powells Campgrounds, and Pine Island RV and Marina offer full or partial hookups, boat ramps, and easy water access. Sunny Sands Nudist Resort and Mobile Home Park, in nearby Pierson, is a clothing-optional resort with RV sites, tent sites, and furnished mobile homes.
Inside the national forest, developed federal campgrounds at Alexander Springs, Salt Springs, Juniper Springs, and Clearwater Lake sit within a short drive. Astor is roughly a 40-mile drive from Ocala, DeLand, and Daytona Beach, making it a reasonable base for day trips in several directions.
Things to do near Astor
The St. Johns River is the main draw. The river holds largemouth bass, striped bass, bluegill, and catfish, and Parramore's Campground, Powells Campgrounds, Pine Island RV and Marina, and St Johns River Campground all provide direct river access, boat ramps, and bait.
The Ocala National Forest offers freshwater springs that stay at a near-constant temperature year round. Alexander Springs is one of only 27 first-magnitude springs in Florida, with a gently sloped spring pool at a constant 72°F. Salt Springs discharges roughly 52 million gallons of water daily at a constant 74°F, and it is the only place in the national forest where scuba diving is permitted at Alexander Springs.
The Florida National Scenic Trail passes through the forest, with access at Clearwater Lake, Alexander Springs, Juniper Springs, and Salt Springs. Manatee viewing on the river runs, canoe rentals at the springs, and off-road forest drives round out the options.

Central Florida runs on a wet-summer, dry-winter pattern. The subtropical climate produces hot, humid summers and mild winters, and most campgrounds in the area remain open year round, though summer brings higher temperatures and increased mosquito activity. Winter and early spring are peak RV season, when snowbirds fill private parks for weeks at a time and weekend availability tightens sharply.
Summer is the wet season. July is the wettest month in Astor, with rain falling on about 25 days and totals near 134 mm. Afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily, and lightning is a serious hazard on the river and at exposed lake sites. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk from August through October.
Fall shoulder season, particularly late October and November, offers cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and fewer bugs. At Alexander Springs Recreation Area, a Vehicle Access Reservation is required on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend.

How to book a campsite near Astor
Federal campgrounds in the Ocala National Forest are reserved through Recreation.gov. Alexander Springs campsites require reservations by calling 1-877-444-6777 or booking at recreation.gov, with a maximum stay of 14 consecutive days in a 30-day period and no electric, water, or sewer hookups. Salt Springs uses the same reservation system by phone or online at Recreation.gov. Salt Springs is the largest campground in the Ocala National Forest and the only one with full hookups for RVs.
Private parks in Astor, including St Johns River Campground, Parramore's Campground, Powells Campgrounds, Pine Island RV and Marina, and Sunny Sands Nudist Resort and Mobile Home Park, are booked directly with the campground by phone or through their own websites. Winter reservations at riverside parks should be made several months in advance.
Florida State Forest sites, including River Road Campground in Lake George State Forest southeast of Astor, can be booked up to 11 months in advance through ReserveAmerica.
What to expect on the ground
Expect flat, sandy terrain with heavy tree cover. Campgrounds sit among pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, and along the river, and sites typically have natural vegetation providing varying degrees of privacy. Riverside sites at Astor's private parks generally offer full hookups; forest campgrounds range from full hookups at Salt Springs to no hookups at Alexander Springs, which has hot showers and a dump station.
Cell service can be spotty within the Ocala National Forest, and campers should be prepared for wildlife encounters, including black bears and alligators. Personal golf carts are not allowed in the Ocala National Forest, and if brought in, must remain on their trailer.
Bear-aware food storage is required: keep food out of sight in approved containers or locked in the vehicle, and remove food from the area after eating. Swimming in the St. Johns River itself is not advised due to alligators; the springs are the safe swimming choice.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Astor, FL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Astor, FL?
RV rental in Astor is affordable thanks to the small-town setting and the range of owner-listed rigs on RVezy. Travel trailers typically run about $90 to $180 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $300, and larger Class A options can reach $350 or more. Because Astor sits at the edge of the Ocala National Forest, many hosts include extras like camp chairs or outdoor gear. For a cheap RV rental in Astor, travel midweek, choose a smaller travel trailer, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Prices tend to soften between late spring and early fall when snowbird season ends, making summer a good value window if you can handle the heat.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Astor%2C%20FloridaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Astor, FL?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Astor. Florida does not require a CDL or special RV endorsement, even for the largest Class A motorhomes on the platform. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older and complete a quick ID verification when booking. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home-country license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association. No DMV trips, no extra paperwork. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple it is to get on the road in Florida.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance and roadside help included in Astor?
Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can rent an RV in Astor without arranging separate coverage. The protection plan covers damage to the vehicle within the plan's terms, giving you real peace of mind even if you have never driven anything larger than an SUV. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, so you stay in control of your coverage. If you get a flat on State Road 40 heading into the Ocala National Forest or need a jump at Astor Landing, one call gets help dispatched. Book with confidence and focus on the springs, not the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Astor RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy platform-wide, not the host. Cancellation terms are managed by RVezy and the refund amount depends on how far in advance of your trip you cancel. Because the policy is consistent across the platform, the process is the same whether you are renting a campervan in Astor or a fifth wheel down in Umatilla. Hurricane and named-storm season runs June 1 to November 30 in Florida, so it is wise to book early to lock in the rig you love while knowing the cancellation framework is clear and consistent. If a host cancels, RVezy supports guests with refunds or travel credits, and support is available before, during, and after your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip in Astor?
Yes, Astor is a dog-friendly corner of Central Florida, and a pet-friendly RV rental in Astor is easy to find by toggling the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. Many local hosts welcome pets, and some include water bowls or pet beds. Once you arrive, the Ocala National Forest has miles of leashed-pet trails, and dogs are welcome on leash at Salt Springs and Alexander Springs day-use areas (not in the designated swimming zones). Parramore's Fish Camp and Astor Landing both allow pets on-site. Bring a long line so your dog can splash safely along the St. Johns River shoreline at your campsite while staying tethered.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/ocala/recreation/hiking/recarea/?recid=83562&actid=50Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Astor?
Yes, RV delivery in Astor is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially for first-time renters or anyone flying into Orlando or Daytona. Many RVezy hosts will drive the rig directly to Astor Landing, Parramore's Fish Camp, or your private campsite, set up the awning and stabilizers, connect water and power, and walk you through everything before they leave. Use the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host to confirm your campsite address. Delivery is a game-changer if you want a big fifth wheel parked riverside on the St. Johns without towing it yourself: just show up, unpack, and start fishing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow far can I drive on an Astor RV trip?
You can roam widely on your Astor RV trip thanks to the town's central Florida location. Each host sets a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day), and some offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for longer loops. From Astor you are roughly 40 minutes to Silver Springs, about an hour to Daytona Beach, around 90 minutes to Walt Disney World in Orlando, just under two hours to St. Augustine, and about two hours to the Kennedy Space Center. For a bigger RV road trip from Astor down to the Keys or up to the Panhandle, filter for unlimited-mileage listings and message the host to confirm. Ask about a flat-rate mileage package, many hosts will customize one.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Astor%2C%20FloridaWhere are the best campgrounds near Astor, FL?
The best campgrounds near Astor put you right on the St. Johns River or deep in the Ocala National Forest. Astor Landing Campground and Marina offers full hookups, boat docks, and a ramp directly into the river. Parramore's Fish Camp and RV Resort has level full-hookup sites plus a pool and cabins. For a more rustic experience, Alexander Springs Recreation Area and Juniper Springs Recreation Area inside the national forest offer shaded sites steps from world-famous swimming springs. Salt Springs Recreation Area, about 25 minutes away, has the only full-hookup RV sites inside the forest. Book riverside or spring-side sites early for the best winter sunrise wildlife viewing.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725When is the best time of year for an RV trip to Astor?
The sweet spot for an Astor RV trip is mid-October through April, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s, humidity drops, and the springs stay a constant 72F (a warm soak in winter, a cool plunge in summer). Winter is peak season here, with snowbirds filling RV parks, so book early. Summer (June through September) brings highs near 90F, afternoon thunderstorms, and Atlantic hurricane season from June 1 to November 30, but it is also when RV rates are most affordable and the springs feel most refreshing. Spring (March through May) hits a great balance of warm water, wildflowers, and manageable crowds. February manatee viewing at nearby Blue Spring State Park is unforgettable.
weather.gov/mlb/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Astor?
You'll be just fine, Astor is actually one of the easier places in Florida for first time renting an RV. The town sits on quiet State Road 40 with flat terrain, light traffic, and short distances between fuel, groceries, and campgrounds. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup: they'll show you how to level the rig, hook up water and sewer, run the generator, deploy the awning, and operate the propane. You can also message them anytime during your trip with questions. If you'd rather skip driving altogether, choose a host who offers delivery and setup directly to Astor Landing or Parramore's. Pro tip: practice a few right turns in an empty lot first, then enjoy the scenic drive along the Black Bear Scenic Byway.
flhsmv.gov/safety-center/driving-safety/What happens if something breaks down during my Astor RV trip?
You are never alone on the road. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on State Road 40, a dead battery at Alexander Springs, or a propane issue at Astor Landing is just one phone call away from being fixed. The roadside team can dispatch a tow, jump-start, tire change, lockout service, or fuel delivery anywhere in Lake or Volusia County. Your host is also a message away for quick how-to questions, and RVezy support stands by before, during, and after your trip. Snap a few photos of the RV's tires and exterior at pickup, it speeds up any roadside or post-trip claim and keeps things stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Astor RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, most RVezy hosts in Astor allow cross-state travel on an RV road trip from Astor, whether you are heading up to Georgia's Cumberland Island, west toward New Orleans, or north along the Atlantic coast. Message the host directly from the listing before booking to confirm your route. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance coverage, so always ask first. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection plan does not extend there. Popular multi-day loops from Astor include the Florida Gulf Coast (Clearwater, Sanibel), the Panhandle (Destin, Pensacola), and the Smoky Mountains. Share your full route with your host, they often suggest favorite campgrounds along the way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an Astor RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easiest costs to plan for. Class B campervans typically get about 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A rigs land around 6 to 10 mpg. Florida gas prices generally track close to the national average, with stations in Astor proper, Pierson, and Umatilla. A typical 4-night Astor RV trip with day drives to Alexander Springs, Silver Springs, and Daytona Beach burns roughly 200 to 300 miles of fuel. Fill up in Umatilla or Eustis before heading deep into the Ocala National Forest, gas stations thin out fast once you are past State Road 19, and prices can climb in tourist zones.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Astor?
Reserve your campsites as soon as your RV rental in Astor is locked in, especially for winter trips. Federal recreation areas like Alexander Springs, Juniper Springs, Salt Springs, and Fore Lake book through Recreation.gov up to six months in advance, and the prime November-through-March window fills fast with snowbirds. Florida State Parks like Blue Spring (about 35 minutes south) open reservations 11 months out at FloridaStateParks.org and can sell out for manatee season the day they release. Private parks like Astor Landing, Parramore's, and Wildwoods are usually easier to grab 2 to 4 weeks ahead. If you strike out online, call the campground directly the morning of your arrival, last-minute cancellations open up daily.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are driving conditions like around Astor?
Driving in and around Astor is refreshingly easy. State Road 40 is the main artery, a flat, two-lane scenic route that cuts through the Ocala National Forest with wide shoulders and 55 mph limits. Traffic is light outside of weekends, and there are no mountain passes, tolls, or steep grades to worry about. The Astor Bridge over the St. Johns River has standard clearance and handles even larger Class A motorhomes. Watch for two local quirks: black bears occasionally cross at dawn and dusk along the Black Bear Scenic Byway, and summer afternoon thunderstorms can dump heavy rain fast. Avoid driving through the forest after dark when wildlife is most active for the smoothest, safest ride.
fdot.gov/safety/What amenities do campgrounds near Astor offer for RVs?
Campgrounds around Astor cover the full range from full-hookup resorts to rustic forest sites. Astor Landing and Parramore's Fish Camp offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi in their common areas, perfect for RV camping in Astor with all the comforts. Salt Springs Recreation Area inside the Ocala National Forest is the only federal site nearby with full RV hookups; Alexander, Juniper, and Fore Lake offer dry camping with potable water spigots, bathhouses, and centralized dump stations. You can also dump and fill water for a small fee at Astor Landing if you are staying at a primitive site. Cell service drops fast in the forest, so download offline maps and reservation confirmations before you leave town.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/ocala/recreation/camping-cabins/recarea/?recid=83564&actid=29What's inside the RVs available for rent in Astor?
RVs available for motorhome rental in Astor come fully equipped to live in comfortably from the moment you step inside. Expect real beds (queen or king in most Class C and travel trailers), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a private bathroom with shower and toilet, climate-controlled AC and heat, and dinettes that often convert to extra sleeping space. Many rigs include a TV, and some hosts offer Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor speakers, generators for boondocking, and seatbelts for every passenger. Campervan rental in Astor (Class B) is more compact but still includes a bed, kitchenette, and wet bath. Check the listing's amenities list, many Astor hosts include fishing rods, kayaks, or outdoor grills, ideal for a St. Johns River sunset cookout.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Astor%2C%20FloridaWhat add-ons and pickup options can I get with my Astor RV rental?
Astor hosts offer a great mix of add-ons to customize your trip. Common extras include kitchen kits, linen and towel packages, portable generators, bike racks, kayaks or paddleboards (handy on the St. Johns River), camp chairs, fire pits, and pet packages. Delivery to Astor Landing, Parramore's, or any Ocala National Forest campground is offered by many hosts at a per-mile rate set in their listing. Mileage policies vary: many hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day with extra miles at a set per-mile rate, and some offer unlimited mileage for road-trippers. Bundle delivery with a kayak rental: your RV gets dropped off riverside with the kayak already strapped on, ready to launch.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Astor%2C%20FloridaHow does payment and the security deposit work for an Astor RV rental?
Payment is handled entirely through RVezy, so you never hand cash or cards to the host. When you book, you pay the rental total securely online. A separate refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card, with the amount set by the host and shown before you confirm. The deposit is released after your trip ends, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. Do a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup, take date-stamped photos and videos of the interior and exterior, and follow the host's checkout instructions (waste tanks emptied, fuel topped off, generator hours logged). Keep your fuel and dump-station receipts from stops in Umatilla or DeLand, they help confirm you returned the rig properly and can speed up your deposit refund.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's the best way to beat the summer heat on an Astor RV trip?
Astor summers are hot, with highs in the low 90s and matching humidity, but the area is built for it. Every RVezy rental comes with roof-mounted air conditioning, and almost all local campgrounds offer 30/50-amp shore power so you can run AC steadily without draining a battery. The real secret weapon is the springs: Alexander, Juniper, Salt, and Silver Glen all stay a constant 72F year-round, making them the perfect midday escape. Drive in the early morning, swim or paddle midday, and enjoy riverside dinners as temperatures drop after sunset. Local hosts know the climate, ask about rigs with dual AC units and tinted windows for the most comfortable July afternoons.
