Campgrounds and RV parks near Avon Park, FL

Fishing dominates the local scene. The Highlands chain-of-lakes holds largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill, and many RV parks sit directly on the water with ramps and docks. Bird watching, kayaking, and airboat tours are common on Lake Istokpoga and the Kissimmee River. Highlands Hammock State Park offers bicycling the scenic loop drive, hiking nature trails, picnicking, bird-watching, and a fully accessible tram tour that allows visitors to view birds, alligators, turtles, deer and other wildlife in areas restricted to public access. Elevated boardwalks pass through cypress swamp where alligators are often visible. Families also head to Sebring for the historic downtown circle, the Sebring International Raceway during event weekends, and Donaldson Park for a public beach on Lake Jackson. Golf, pickleball, and shuffleboard are built into many local RV resorts.

Peak RV season runs from roughly November through March, when daytime highs sit in the seventies and humidity drops. Snowbird demand is strong, and lakeside resorts often book monthly stays well in advance. Reflections on Silver Lake, Adelaide Shores RV Resort, and similar parks fill quickly during this window, so reserving several months ahead is standard. Spring brings warmer weather and thinning crowds. April and May are good for fishing and hiking before the summer rainy season builds. Prescribed burns on the Avon Park Air Force Range are common in cooler months, and public access to the range is only provided on weekends when authorized by the Installation Commander. Summer is hot, humid, and wet, with near-daily afternoon thunderstorms and the Atlantic hurricane season running June through November. Many part-time residents leave, so private RV parks have more availability, but travelers should monitor tropical forecasts and confirm each park's storm policy before arrival.

Most private parks near Avon Park are level, grassy or gravel sites with full hookups, on-site laundry, and a clubhouse. Many are 55-plus or heavily snowbird-oriented, so families should confirm age policies and pool rules when booking. Cell service is generally solid on the US-27 corridor and weaker on backroads toward the Kissimmee River. Highlands Hammock offers a more traditional state-park feel with shaded sites, a dump station, and no WiFi at the campground. Site lengths vary, and RVers should verify site dimensions when booking. Expect mosquitoes and no-see-ums near water, especially at dusk in warmer months. Deer, alligators and a variety of birds frequent the park, so keep pets leashed and away from shorelines.
