Big Pine Key camping overview
Big Pine Key sits in the Lower Florida Keys at mile marker 30 on the Overseas Highway, between Marathon and Key West. It works well as a base for RV travelers because it combines a quiet residential island with quick access to state park beaches, the National Key Deer Refuge, and Key West day trips. The island itself is home to the endangered Key deer, the smallest subspecies of North American white-tailed deer, which roam freely through neighborhoods and along Key Deer Boulevard.
RV options on and around the island range from full-service private resorts to a state park campground. Royal Palm RV Park and Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge and RV Resort are on Big Pine Key itself, while Bahia Honda State Park RV Campground sits roughly 12 miles north at mile marker 36.8 inside Bahia Honda State Park. Sunshine Key RV Resort and Marina is a larger private resort just north of Bahia Honda on Ohio Key.
Demand is heavy from December through April, and waterfront sites at every park book far ahead of arrival dates.
Things to do around Big Pine Key
The National Key Deer Refuge protects Key deer, found only in the Lower Keys. The Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges Nature Center at mile marker 30.5 is open Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and admission is free. The Blue Hole observation deck, along with the Jack Watson and Fred Mannillo nature trails off Key Deer Boulevard, offer the most reliable wildlife viewing. Blue Hole is the largest body of fresh water in the Keys and often has alligators, wading birds, and deer nearby.
Bahia Honda State Park has some of the only natural sand beaches in the Keys, plus snorkeling, kayaking, and a marina with boat slips and reef trips. Fishing charters, backcountry flats trips, and reef diving launch from Big Pine Key and nearby marinas. Key West is roughly a 30-mile drive south for a full day trip.

Winter and early spring, roughly December through April, are peak season. Daytime highs sit in the mid-70s to low 80s Fahrenheit, humidity is lower, and rainfall is minimal. This is when snowbirds fill every RV park in the Lower Keys, and sites at Bahia Honda State Park book to the eleven-month window almost immediately. Spring break weeks in March draw the largest single-week crowds.
Late spring and early summer bring warm water and strong fishing. Tarpon season peaks in spring, and snorkeling visibility is often at its best from March through June. Temperatures climb into the high 80s and low 90s by June, with rising humidity.
Summer and early fall are the wettest months and coincide with Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 through November 30 and peaks from August through October. Afternoon thunderstorms are common. Late fall, after Labor Day and before Thanksgiving, is quieter and often offers open sites, though tropical storm risk remains until the end of November.

How to book an RV site
Bahia Honda State Park RV Campground is reserved through the Florida State Parks reservation system, either online or by phone at 800-326-3521, and the booking window opens eleven months before arrival. Sites at Bahia Honda State Park sell out within seconds when the window opens for winter and spring dates, so travelers should be logged in and ready at the moment reservations release. Cancellation-scan services are commonly used to catch openings.
Royal Palm RV Park, Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge and RV Resort, and Sunshine Key RV Resort and Marina are private resorts booked directly with each property. Waterfront and full-hookup sites at private resorts also fill months ahead for the December-through-April window, and shorter notice is usually possible for weekday stays in late spring, summer, and fall.
What to expect on site
Bahia Honda State Park has three campgrounds totaling 80 sites. Buttonwood (sites 1 to 48) accommodates larger RVs on gravel pads with electric and water hookups, picnic tables, grills, a bathhouse with hot showers, and a nearby dump station. Sandspur (sites 49 to 72) suits rigs up to about 23 feet due to tight loop turns. Bayside (sites 73 to 80) is primitive with water only and is reached by passing under the Bahia Honda Bridge, which has a 6 foot 8 inch clearance, so tall RVs cannot enter. Generators are not permitted anywhere in the park.
Private resorts on Big Pine Key generally offer full hookups with water, sewer, and electric, along with pools, laundry, boat ramps, and Wi-Fi. Sites tend to be closely spaced. Insect repellent is essential year-round.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Big%20Pine%20Key%2C%20FloridaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Big Pine Key?
Good news: your everyday driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Florida, including every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy in Big Pine Key. No commercial license, no special RV endorsement, no test. You just need to be 25 or older and complete RVezy's quick ID verification through the platform before your trip. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit from your local auto club (usually under $25) and you're set. With a flat, straight Overseas Highway running right through Big Pine Key, this is one of the easiest places in Florida to drive an RV for the first time.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Big Pine Key protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Big Pine Key includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can cross the Seven Mile Bridge with confidence. During checkout, you choose the protection level that fits your trip, which covers most accidental damage to the RV. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides real financial peace of mind whether you are navigating US-1 or parked at Bahia Honda State Park. You select your coverage level at booking, so you stay in control. Pro tip: save RVezy support's number on your phone before heading into the Keys, where cell service can dip between mile markers.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Big Pine Key RV trip?
Plans change, and RVezy makes cancellation low-stress. Every booking is backed by RVezy's standard cancellation policy, which includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates without second-guessing. Refund amounts after that depend on how close you are to your trip start date, and special circumstances like hurricanes (a real consideration in the Lower Keys from June through November) are reviewed by RVezy's support team. You will see the full details when you check out and inside your trip dashboard. Pro tip: booking earlier gives you more flexibility, which matters in Big Pine Key where the best waterfront sites get reserved months in advance.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Big Pine Key?
Absolutely, plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in Big Pine Key welcome dogs. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see hosts who allow pets, and message them to confirm any size or breed notes. Once you are here, your pup will love the Lower Keys lifestyle: leashed dogs are welcome on the paved roads of the National Key Deer Refuge (though not on interior trails, to protect the endangered Key deer), and Bahia Honda State Park allows leashed pets in designated areas of the campground and select trails. Pro tip: Big Pine Key has hot pavement year-round, so book a rental with strong AC and bring booties for midday walks.
fws.gov/refuge/national-key-deerCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Big Pine Key?
Yes, RV delivery in Big Pine Key is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who would rather skip driving across the Seven Mile Bridge in an unfamiliar rig. Many hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome or travel trailer directly at Big Pine Key RV Park (mile marker 33), Bahia Honda State Park, or Sunshine Key RV Resort. They will level it, hook up power and water, walk you through everything, and pick it up at the end. Filter listings by Delivery to see who offers it and what they charge (typically a flat fee plus per-mile from their base). Pro tip: confirm your campground allows third-party drop-off when you book your site.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/bahia-honda-state-parkHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Big Pine Key?
Big Pine Key is one of the best launchpads in Florida for an RV road trip, with iconic destinations within easy reach. Key West sits just 30 miles south (about 45 minutes down US-1), Marathon and the Seven Mile Bridge are 15 miles north, Key Largo is roughly 75 miles, the Everglades National Park main entrance is about 110 miles, and Miami is 130 miles or roughly a 3-hour drive. Most RVezy hosts include a daily mileage allowance (often 100-150 miles per day) and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. Pro tip: ask hosts about unlimited mileage when you message, especially if you are planning to bounce between the Lower Keys and the mainland.
fdot.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Big Pine Key for an RV?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Big Pine Key. Big Pine Key RV Park at mile marker 33 offers nearly 100 full-hookup waterfront sites, a marina, and a rooftop pool. Bahia Honda State Park, just 5 miles north, has three campgrounds with sites that face some of the most photographed beaches in Florida. Sunshine Key RV Resort on Ohio Key sits right on the Gulf with a marina and pool. Royal Palm RV Park is a quieter, snowbird-friendly option on Big Pine itself. Pro tip: Bahia Honda releases reservations 11 months out and they vanish within minutes, so set a calendar reminder if you want one of those legendary sandbar views.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/bahia-honda-state-parkWhen is the best time to visit Big Pine Key in an RV?
Big Pine Key is a year-round destination, but each season has its own sweet spot. December through April is peak season, with daytime highs of 75-80F, low humidity, and minimal rain, which is why snowbirds book months ahead. May and November are the smart-money shoulder months: warm water, smaller crowds, and lower nightly rates. Summer (June through September) brings highs in the upper 80s, afternoon thunderstorms, and lobster mini-season in late July. Hurricane season officially runs June through November, so watch the forecast. Pro tip: late April hits the magic combo of perfect weather, fewer people, and lower rates on RV rental in Florida, making it a locals' favorite time for a Big Pine Key RV trip.
weather.gov/key/I have never driven an RV before. Is Big Pine Key beginner-friendly?
Big Pine Key is one of the friendliest spots in the country for a first time renting an RV. The Overseas Highway (US-1) is flat, straight, and well-maintained, with no mountain passes or aggressive city traffic once you are south of Homestead. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation at pickup, covering everything from the propane and water systems to backing up and dumping tanks, and you can message them anytime during your trip. If even that feels like a lot, book a host who delivers and sets up the RV for you at your campground. Pro tip: drive the speed limit (often 45-55 mph on US-1) and pull over at marked turnouts to let locals pass, you will relax immediately.
fdot.gov/safety/What if something breaks down during my RV rental in Big Pine Key?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on the Seven Mile Bridge or a finicky generator at Bahia Honda does not have to ruin your trip. One call connects you to dispatch for tows, jump-starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and tire service. Your host is also a quick message away to troubleshoot anything specific to their RV, from awning quirks to the water pump. Pro tip: cell coverage on the Lower Keys is generally solid along US-1 but can fade in the National Key Deer Refuge interior, so screenshot the RVezy support number and your host's contact info before you head off the highway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Big Pine Key RV rental out of Florida or into Mexico?
You can absolutely cross state lines on a Big Pine Key RV trip, road-tripping up to Georgia, the Carolinas, or Alabama is fair game with most hosts as long as you let them know in advance. Cross-border travel into Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental, since the insurance and protection plan do not extend there. Canada-bound trips may be possible with host approval, but realistically Big Pine Key is a 30+ hour drive from the nearest border, so most renters stick to Florida and the Southeast. Pro tip: confirm out-of-state travel with your host before booking by sending a quick message from the listing page so mileage and routing are clear.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will I spend on fuel during a Big Pine Key RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your RV budget, but the Keys are kinder than you would think because total distances are short. Expect 7-10 MPG for Class A motorhomes, 10-14 MPG for Class C, and 15-20 MPG for campervans or trucks pulling travel trailers. Florida gas prices typically run within a few cents of the national average, though Lower Keys stations (Big Pine Key, Summerland, Cudjoe) can run higher per gallon than mainland Florida. Fill up in Florida City or Homestead before crossing into the Keys to save real money. Pro tip: a round trip from Miami to Key West and back is only about 320 miles, so even a thirsty Class A motorhome rental in Big Pine Key will not burn through your budget.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Big Pine Key?
For Big Pine Key, earlier is always better. Bahia Honda State Park opens reservations 11 months in advance through the Florida State Parks reservation system, and waterfront sites are typically gone within minutes, especially for December through April. Big Pine Key RV Park and Sunshine Key RV Resort book 6-9 months out for high season, while summer and fall sites can sometimes be grabbed 2-4 weeks ahead. National Key Deer Refuge is a day-use area only, so all overnight stays happen at private parks or state campgrounds. Pro tip: if Bahia Honda is full, set up at Big Pine Key RV Park (mile marker 33) and day-trip to Bahia Honda's beach, you get the same turquoise water without the 11-month booking sprint.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/bahia-honda-state-parkWhat are the driving conditions like on the Overseas Highway?
Driving an RV from the mainland to Big Pine Key is genuinely scenic and surprisingly easy. US-1 (the Overseas Highway) is a two-lane road for most of the 113-mile stretch from Key Largo to Key West, with frequent passing zones and posted speeds of 45-55 mph. The Seven Mile Bridge is the showstopper, and yes, your motorhome will fit (clearance is open-air, no overhead restrictions). Watch for crosswinds on the longer bridges, slow-moving traffic on weekends, and Key deer crossings at dusk in the Lower Keys (the speed limit drops to 35 mph at night through Big Pine Key for this reason). Pro tip: leave Miami before 9 AM on Fridays to dodge weekend traffic backups around Key Largo.
fdot.gov/What amenities do Big Pine Key campgrounds offer for RVs?
Lower Keys campgrounds are well set up for RVs of all sizes. Big Pine Key RV Park offers full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric, cable) plus an on-site dump station, freshwater fill, marina, pool, and laundry. Bahia Honda State Park has water and 30/50-amp electric at most sites with a centralized dump station and potable water fill near the entrance. Sunshine Key RV Resort delivers full hookups plus Wi-Fi and a pool. For dump stations on the road, there is a public option at Curry Hammock State Park near Marathon. Pro tip: ground at many sites is hard-packed coral limestone, so ask your host whether the RV comes with extra-long heavy stakes or a rubber mallet for awning tie-downs.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/bahia-honda-state-parkWhat is included inside the RV I rent in Big Pine Key?
Big Pine Key rentals are vacation-ready out of the box. Most motorhome listings on RVezy come with a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, sleeping for 4-8 depending on layout, roof AC (essential in the Keys), a TV, and a generator or shore-power setup. Class B campervan options are more compact but still include a bed, mini-fridge, sink, and small cooktop, perfect for couples. Seatbelts are provided for the number of travelers each RV is rated for. Pro tip: Wi-Fi varies by host, so if you are working remotely, ask whether they include a hotspot or whether the RV has a cellular booster, useful when service dips on US-1.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Big%20Pine%20Key%2C%20FloridaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Big Pine Key?
RVezy hosts in the Lower Keys make customizing your trip easy. Common add-ons for an RV rental in Florida include linens and towel packages ($25-75), kitchen kits, paddleboards or kayaks (perfect for the flats around Big Pine), generators, propane refills, and pet fees ($25-100). Pickup is usually at the host's home base on Big Pine, Marathon, or up in Homestead, and many offer delivery to campgrounds like Bahia Honda or Big Pine Key RV Park for a flat fee plus mileage. Mileage policies typically include 100-150 free miles per day, with overage at $0.30-0.50 per mile; some hosts offer unlimited mileage upgrades. Pro tip: a paddleboard add-on is gold here, the calm flats off Long Beach Drive are made for it.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Big%20Pine%20Key%2C%20FloridaHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Big Pine Key RV rental?
Payment on RVezy is straightforward and fully handled through the platform, with no cash, checks, or off-platform transactions needed. You pay your booking total (nightly rate, fees, protection, taxes) by credit or debit card at checkout, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup. The deposit amount is set by each host (typically $500-$1,500 for Big Pine Key rentals) and is released after the trip ends, assuming no damage, missing items, or extra cleaning. Keeping everything inside RVezy is also how your protection plan stays valid. Pro tip: do a thorough video walkthrough with your host at pickup and dropoff, this is the single best way to avoid deposit surprises after a Big Pine Key RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat should I know about hurricane season when renting an RV in Big Pine Key?
Hurricane season in the Florida Keys runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity in August and September. The good news: storms are tracked days in advance, so you will have plenty of warning. RVezy's cancellation policy includes provisions for major named-storm evacuations, and Monroe County is quick to issue mandatory evacuation orders for visitors when needed, you simply follow US-1 north to the mainland. Most summers pass without major incident, and tropical showers usually clear by late afternoon. Pro tip: if you are booking June through November, watch the National Hurricane Center's 5-day outlook the week of your trip, build a flexible itinerary, and consider a host with delivery so an evacuation means handing back the keys, not driving a 30-foot Class A in a hurry.
