Campgrounds and RV parks near Bowling Green, FL

Paynes Creek Historic State Park, southeast of town on Lake Branch Road, is the main outdoor draw. The park preserves the site of Fort Chokonikla and the Kennedy and Darling Trading Post, and offers about three miles of hiking trails, a visitor center and museum, picnic pavilions, and a hand launch on the Peace River. A swinging footbridge connects trails on either side of the creek. The Peace River Paddling Trail runs through the park. A popular downstream segment ends at Peace River Park in Wauchula and takes three to four hours by canoe or kayak. Anglers fish the river for largemouth bass, catfish, and migrating snook with a Florida license. Hardee Lakes County Park, west of town off Ollie Roberts Road, covers roughly 1,200 acres of former phosphate pits now used for fishing across four lakes, hiking, biking, equestrian trails, and RV or tent camping.

Winter and early spring are peak season for RV travel in this part of Florida. From December through March, daytime highs sit in the low to mid 70s Fahrenheit, humidity is low, and the snowbird parks around Bowling Green and Wauchula run their fullest activity schedules. Sites at 55-plus resorts like Pioneer Creek RV Resort, Torrey Oaks RV and Golf Resort, and Crystal Lake Village fill months in advance for this window, and many guests book on multi-month leases. Summer is hot, humid, and wet. The rainy season runs June through September and brings near-daily afternoon thunderstorms. The Peace River is subject to flooding, especially in the later part of the rainy season, and the hand launch at Paynes Creek can be affected during high water. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November and peaks from mid-August into October. Fall visitors should track tropical forecasts and confirm campground status before arrival, since inland Hardee County took significant damage from Hurricane Charley in 2004 and from more recent storms.

The landscape around Bowling Green is flat, with elevations under about 100 feet, and shaded by live oaks, sand pines, and sweetgum. Roads into the RV resorts are paved, and most sites are level with full hookups including 30 and 50 amp service, water, and sewer. Big rigs are generally welcome at the larger private resorts, though rig-length limits vary by site, so confirm at booking. Cell service on major carriers is reliable in and around town, and Walmart, Winn-Dixie, and other grocery and hardware stores sit within a few miles of most Wauchula parks. Expect a quiet, retirement-community atmosphere at the larger resorts, with clubhouse activities, heated pools, and shuffleboard or pickleball as the main on-site recreation. Alligators, snakes, gopher tortoises, deer, and wading birds are common along the Peace River and its tributaries.
