Camping near East Palatka, Florida
East Palatka sits on the east bank of the St. Johns River in Putnam County, about 30 minutes south of St. Augustine and roughly an hour from Jacksonville, Daytona Beach, and Gainesville. The area is a working river town surrounded by fish camps, hardwood hammocks, and citrus and potato fields, and it functions as a practical base for RV travelers exploring northeast Florida without the crowds of the coast.
Most private campgrounds cluster along US-17 and the river channels. St. John's Campground sits directly on Highway 17 with full hookups, pull-throughs, a pool, and shaded sites. Lynchs Landing RV Park and Cottages and Half Shell Resort and Marina lie within a few miles, both oriented toward river access and fishing. Further south near Welaka, 4 Lakes Campground and Welaka Lodge and Resort offer quieter lake and river settings.
Public land is close by as well. Ravine Gardens State Park in Palatka, Dunns Creek State Park, and the Welaka State Forest all sit within a short drive, and the Ocala National Forest is reachable across the river.
Things to do around East Palatka
The St. Johns River drives most of the recreation here. Visitors typically fish for bass, bream, and catfish, launch kayaks and pontoons, or run downriver toward Lake George and Dunns Creek. Half Shell Resort and Marina and Lynchs Landing RV Park and Cottages both cater to boaters, and the Rodman Reservoir south of town is a well-known trophy bass water.
On land, Ravine Gardens State Park in Palatka features a 1.8-mile paved perimeter loop past steephead ravines and gardens planted by the Works Progress Administration, popular for walking, jogging, and biking. Welaka State Forest has hiking trails and equestrian access, and the Welaka National Fish Hatchery aquarium is a low-key stop for families. St. Augustine and Crescent Beach are within about 30 minutes for a day trip.

Winter and early spring are the busiest camping months. From roughly December through April, daytime highs are mild, humidity is low, and mosquitoes are manageable, which is why snowbirds and long-stay RVers fill parks along the St. Johns River. The Florida Azalea Festival draws a spike in visitors to Palatka in early March, when the plantings at Ravine Gardens State Park are in bloom.
Summer is hot, humid, and wet. Afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily from June through August, and August is typically the wettest month with heavy rainfall spread across many days. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, peaking in September, and the Florida Forest Service closes state forest campgrounds whenever Putnam County is placed under a tropical storm or hurricane warning.
Fall shoulder season, especially late October and November, is dry and comfortable, and November is historically the driest month of the year.

How to book campgrounds near East Palatka
Private parks in East Palatka, including St. John's Campground, Lynchs Landing RV Park and Cottages, Half Shell Resort and Marina, 4 Lakes Campground, and Welaka Lodge and Resort, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and some also list on third-party platforms. Winter sites for January through March tend to fill months in advance, so book early for peak season.
Florida State Parks, including Ravine Gardens and Dunns Creek, use the state reservation system at reserve.floridastateparks.org. Florida residents can book up to 11 months in advance, while non-residents are limited to a 10-month window, and popular winter sites often fill within minutes of opening. Florida State Forest campsites, such as those in Welaka State Forest, are booked through the Florida State Forests reservation portal on ReserveAmerica.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a rural, river-town feel rather than a resort scene. Sites at private parks are generally level with sandy pads, mature shade trees, and full hookups including 30 and 50 amp service. Most parks in this corridor accept big rigs and pull-throughs, though some older sections have tight interior roads, so confirm rig length when booking.
Cell service is generally reliable on US-17 and thins out on back roads and inside Welaka State Forest. Wildlife includes alligators in any freshwater body, so keep pets leashed and away from the river's edge, and expect mosquitoes and no-see-ums near dusk from spring through fall.
Groceries, fuel, propane, and RV supplies are available in Palatka just across the river. St. Augustine and Gainesville cover anything larger.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near East Palatka, FL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in East Palatka, FL?
RV rental in East Palatka is one of the better values in northeast Florida, with most listings ranging from about $90 to $175 per night for travel trailers and campervans, and $200 to $325 per night for larger Class A and Class C motorhomes. You can find a cheap RV rental in East Palatka by booking midweek, traveling in late summer (excluding holiday weekends), or filtering for trailers that include delivery. Prices around the Florida Azalea Festival in Palatka each March climb fast, so lock in your dates early if you want bloom-season weather. Pro tip: use the RVezy filters to compare nightly rates, delivery fees, and included mileage in one view before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=East%20Palatka%2C%20FloridaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in East Palatka?
Good news: a regular Florida (or home-state) Class E driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in East Palatka, even for big Class A motorhomes. Florida does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for non-commercial RVs under 26,000 pounds, which covers basically every rig on the RVezy platform. You'll need to be 25 or older, and ID verification happens right inside the RVezy app once you book. Visiting from overseas? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP), and you'll be cleared to roll out toward the St. Johns River the same day.
flhsmv.gov/driver-licenses-id-cards/what-to-bring/Is my East Palatka RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes. Every East Palatka RV trip booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered before you pull out of the driveway. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, and the plan covers eligible accidental damage to the RV based on the tier you select. It is not a traditional auto policy, but it gives renters real peace of mind, especially on first time trips around Putnam County. Pro tip: keep the RVezy app on your phone so roadside help is one tap away if you get a flat near the Cross Florida Greenway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my East Palatka RV trip?
Booking is low risk. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and every reservation includes a grace period right after booking so you can plan with confidence. After that window, your refund depends on how far out you cancel and whether a major event such as a hurricane evacuation order affects your dates. Florida occasionally sees tropical weather, and RVezy works with guests when official storm warnings disrupt travel. Pro tip: review the RVezy cancellation policy details before you book and message the host with any flexibility questions so your full itinerary feels locked in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in East Palatka?
Yes, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in East Palatka, and you can filter listings by Pet-Friendly to see them quickly. Once you find one you like, message the host to confirm pet fees (often $25 to $75) and any breed or size notes. East Palatka is great for dog-loving campers: Ravine Gardens State Park in Palatka allows leashed pets on most paved areas and trails, and the riverfront parks along the St. Johns River are a short drive for morning walks. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl and a shaded mat, since Florida humidity catches pets off guard fast.
floridastateparks.org/learn/pets-state-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campground in East Palatka?
Yes, RV delivery in East Palatka is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, and many local hosts offer it directly through their listing. They will tow or drive the RV to your campground, vacation rental, or driveway, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. It is especially popular for first time renters heading to Faver-Dykes State Park or Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park who would rather skip towing a large trailer themselves. Pro tip: filter listings by Delivery and message the host with your destination so they can quote an exact mileage fee.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=East%20Palatka%2C%20FloridaHow far can I drive on an East Palatka RV trip?
You've got tons of range from East Palatka, and many hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer road trips. St. Augustine sits just 30 miles northeast, Daytona Beach is about 55 miles south, Ocala National Forest is 40 miles west, and Orlando theme parks are roughly 100 miles southwest. Even Jacksonville is only 65 miles north on US-17. Extra miles typically run $0.30 to $0.45 each if you go over. Pro tip: if you're planning a big loop down to the Keys, filter for unlimited-mileage listings before you book to keep your fuel budget simple.
fdot.gov/agencyresources/mapsWhere are the best campgrounds near East Palatka?
East Palatka is surrounded by strong RV camping options. Top picks include Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park (about 35 miles west, with electric and water sites under tall pines), Faver-Dykes State Park (about 25 miles northeast near Pellicer Creek, great for paddlers), Salt Springs Recreation Area in Ocala National Forest (about 45 minutes west, with a clear swimming spring), and Stagecoach RV Park in Palatka (in-town with full hookups and easy St. Johns River access). For a more rustic stay, Rodman Campground on the Cross Florida Greenway offers excellent bass fishing. Pro tip: Florida State Parks campsites open at the 11 month booking window through the Florida State Parks Reserve system, and prime winter sites go fast.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/mike-roess-gold-head-branch-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in East Palatka?
The sweet spot for RV camping in East Palatka runs from mid-October through May, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 65°F to 82°F range and humidity drops to bearable levels. January and February average highs near 66°F with crisp 48°F nights, perfect for campfires along the St. Johns River. Summer (June through September) brings 90°F+ heat, daily afternoon thunderstorms, and Atlantic hurricane season, so most savvy travelers stick to spring and fall. Pro tip: time your East Palatka RV trip for early March to catch the Florida Azalea Festival in downtown Palatka, when blooms light up Ravine Gardens State Park.
weather.gov/jax/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around East Palatka?
You'll be just fine, and East Palatka is honestly one of the easier places in Florida for first time renting an RV. The roads around town (US-17, SR-100, and SR-207) are flat, wide, and lightly trafficked compared to I-95 or Orlando. Every host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering hookups, slide-outs, dump procedures, and driving tips, and they're a quick text away the entire trip. Stick to right-lane driving, plan fuel stops in Palatka or East Palatka where stations have easy pull-throughs, and avoid the narrow historic streets in downtown St. Augustine with bigger rigs. Pro tip: do a slow parking-lot loop at your pickup to build confidence before hitting the highway.
flhsmv.gov/safety-center/driving-safety/What happens if I have a breakdown or flat tire on my trip?
You're never on your own. Every East Palatka RV rental booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. One call gets a technician dispatched to your location, whether you're parked at Salt Springs or pulled over on US-17. Your host is also a phone or message away for quick troubleshooting on quirks like the generator or awning. Pro tip: snap a photo of your RV's plate, VIN, and tire size right after pickup, so if you ever need service near remote spots like Ocala National Forest, you'll have everything ready in 30 seconds.
fhp.flhsmv.gov/What are the best RV road trips from East Palatka?
East Palatka is a launchpad for some of Florida's best RV road trips. Head about 30 miles northeast to St. Augustine for the nation's oldest city and Anastasia State Park's beachfront camping. Drive about 55 miles south to Daytona Beach, or roughly 100 miles southwest to the Orlando area and Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort. The Ocala National Forest loop features clear springs at Salt, Silver Glen, and Juniper. For a longer RV road trip from East Palatka, follow A1A down the Atlantic coast toward the Florida Keys. RVezy trips must stay within the United States and Canada per the protection plan terms, so keep your adventures stateside. Pro tip: pair St. Augustine with a stop at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park for a relaxed two-night loop.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailHow much should I budget for fuel on an East Palatka RV trip?
Fuel is easy to plan for in this part of Florida. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans get 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG). Florida gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, with stations in Palatka and along US-17 often the cheapest nearby. For a 4-night, 400-mile loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $150 to $200 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in East Palatka or Palatka before heading into Ocala National Forest, where stations are sparse and prices climb at the tourist exits along I-95.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near East Palatka?
For Florida State Parks (the most popular sites near East Palatka), book at the 11 month window the moment it opens on the Florida State Parks Reserve site, especially for winter dates between November and April when snowbirds fill every hookup. Private parks like Stagecoach RV Park in Palatka and Bulow RV Resort near Flagler Beach usually have more flexibility and can often be booked 1 to 3 months out. For summer weekends, 2 to 4 weeks ahead is generally fine. Pro tip: have a backup like Rodman Campground in your back pocket if your first choice is full.
floridastateparks.org/things-to-do/campingWhat are driving conditions like around East Palatka?
Driving an RV around East Palatka is refreshingly stress-free: roads are flat, the terrain is sea-level, and traffic outside of St. Augustine and Jacksonville stays light. Watch for the Memorial Bridge over the St. Johns River into Palatka (16-foot clearance, no issues for standard RVs) and a few narrow shoulders on SR-100 east toward Flagler Beach. Afternoon summer thunderstorms can drop heavy rain quickly between June and September, so plan driving days for mornings. Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and Florida's evacuation routes are clearly marked. Pro tip: avoid I-95 northbound on Sunday afternoons in winter when snowbird traffic backs up north of St. Augustine.
fl511.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near East Palatka?
You'll find a great mix. Florida State Parks like Gold Head Branch and Faver-Dykes offer water and 30/50-amp electric hookups, clean bathhouses with hot showers, dump stations, and shaded sites, though most don't have sewer at the pad. Private parks like Stagecoach RV Park and Bulow RV Resort typically include full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. Free dump stations are available at most Florida State Parks for $5 to $10 if you're not camping there. Potable water fill-ups are easy in Palatka at most truck stops along US-17. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot sewer hose and a water pressure regulator since older Florida parks sometimes have high line pressure.
floridastateparks.org/things-to-do/camping/rv-campingWhat's included inside a typical East Palatka RV rental?
East Palatka motorhome rental and trailer listings come well-equipped for Florida camping. Expect a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and basic cookware, a bathroom with shower and toilet, comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 people depending on the rig, roof air conditioning (essential here), a furnace for cool winter nights, and seatbelts for everyone driving in a motorized RV. Most have a TV, and many include Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor speakers, or a generator for off-grid stays in Ocala National Forest. Campervan rental in East Palatka tends to be more compact but includes the essentials. Pro tip: check each listing's photos and amenities list, and message the host if you specifically need an outdoor shower for sandy beach days.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options are available?
Hosts in East Palatka offer add-ons that make family RV trip planning a breeze: linens and towels ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor rugs ($15 to $30), bikes, kayaks (perfect for the St. Johns River), generators, propane refills, and pre-stocked kitchen kits. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or around East Palatka, Palatka, or nearby Hastings, with delivery available to most campgrounds within 50 miles for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies usually include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extras around $0.35 each. Pro tip: bundle delivery, linens, and a kayak in one message to the host before booking to lock in a better all-in price.
visitflorida.com/things-to-do/outdoors-nature/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy directly when you book (no cash to the host), and your total includes the nightly rate, protection plan, service fee, and any add-ons you select. A refundable security deposit, separate from your booking payment, is placed as a hold a few days before pickup and released after the host confirms the RV was returned in good condition. To keep things smooth, do a thorough walkaround with the host at both pickup and return, taking photos and videos. Pro tip: review the RVezy app checklist before drop-off so your deposit is released quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle the Florida heat and summer storms in an RV?
Florida heat is manageable with a few smart moves. Run the roof AC on shore power (most East Palatka campgrounds offer 30 or 50 amp service that handles it easily), park with the awning side facing away from the afternoon sun, and use reflective windshield covers in motorhomes. Plan driving for mornings before the typical afternoon thunderstorms between June and September. Always check the National Hurricane Center forecast between June 1 and November 30 and keep a flexible itinerary. Pro tip: shoulder seasons (October to November and March to May) are the sweet spot for RV rental in Florida, with cooler temperatures, fewer storms, and lower nightly rates.
