Campgrounds and RV parks near Green Cove Springs, FL

The St. Johns River drives most local recreation: boat ramps, fishing for bass and bream, and paddling on quiet tributaries like Black Creek. Spring Park in downtown Green Cove Springs has a natural sulfur spring that feeds a public swimming pool, plus a riverwalk and playground that work well with kids. Inland, visitors can hike and view wildlife along nature trails and a stretch of the Florida National Scenic Trail, and swim, fish, or canoe on Little Lake Johnson at Gold Head Branch. Whitey's Fish Camp is a long-running waterfront restaurant and marina worth a stop for catfish and boat rentals. Day trips reach St. Augustine's historic district and beaches, Jacksonville's zoo and museums, and Ichetucknee or Silver Springs for tubing and glass-bottom boats.

Late fall through early spring is the strongest window for RV travel here. Days are typically mild and dry, humidity drops, and biting insects fade. Snowbird demand peaks from January through March, so full-hookup sites at private parks book out weeks ahead, and state-park sites go faster still. Spring brings warm afternoons, low rain totals, and clear skies before the summer storm pattern sets up. Summer is hot and humid with near-daily afternoon thunderstorms; mornings on the water are the best time to be outside, and shaded sites are worth seeking out. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk from August into October. Coastal Florida parks occasionally close or evacuate during named storms, so travelers in that window should track NOAA National Hurricane Center advisories and confirm cancellation policies before booking. The Turkey Oak campground at Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park is currently closed for renovations, so check current site availability with the park before planning around it.

Sites near the river and lakes tend to be shaded by live oaks and pines, with sandy pads and some unlevel spots. Gold Head Branch has three loops on rolling sandhills; most sites offer water and 30-amp electric, with 50-amp available at a handful of sites, plus a dump station on property. Big-rig drivers should confirm site length and turning radius, especially at older state parks and fish-camp properties. Expect standard Florida wildlife: alligators in most freshwater bodies, snakes on trails, and heavy mosquito and no-see-um activity from late spring through fall. Keep food secured, and treat clothing and skin before hikes. Cell coverage is generally good near Green Cove Springs and along US-17, but drops off in wooded state-park interiors. Grocery, propane, and dump-station access is easiest in town and along the corridor toward Orange Park.
