Campgrounds and RV parks near Gulfport, FL

The draw here is the water. Gulf beaches at Pass-a-Grille, St. Pete Beach, and Madeira Beach are within a short drive, and Fort De Soto's beaches consistently rank among the best in the country. The county park spreads over 900 acres on five interconnected islands with seven miles of waterfront and about three miles of beach, plus a 2.25-mile designated paddle trail and access to Shell Key and other offshore islands. Cyclists have easy access to the 38-mile Pinellas County Fitness Trail, which runs the length of the peninsula. From the KOA, kayak rentals put paddlers on Long Bayou to watch for herons, egrets, and dolphins. Downtown St. Petersburg adds museums, the St. Pete Pier, and a walkable waterfront, all within about 15 minutes of Gulfport.

Peak RV season on the central Gulf Coast runs from late fall through spring. Waterfront RV parks fill early in winter thanks to the region's mild, sunny weather, and snowbird demand means monthly sites at parks like the KOA are often booked far in advance. Winter and early spring bring the driest, most comfortable stretch for camping. Summer is hot, humid, and stormy. Summer camping means heat, mosquitoes, and afternoon thunderstorms, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November with peak risk in August and September. Rates and crowds ease, but expect daily convective storms and the possibility of storm-driven closures. Fall shoulder season is a favorite of returning RVers. The best time to find a campsite at Fort De Soto is often the fall, when the weather is ideal for camping, biking, and kayaking, and waterfront sites are more available. Sea turtle nesting also shapes campground rules along the coast during warm months, including a campfire ban at Fort De Soto from May through September.

Most parks close to Gulfport are compact, paved or gravel, and oriented toward snowbirds. At the St. Petersburg KOA, some campers note that sites are close together with limited privacy, though several back up to the bayou. Long-term residents are common in the closer private parks. At Fort De Soto, sites are larger and closer to nature. Sites 1-85 are designed for tents, vans, pop-up campers, and trailers shorter than 16 feet, while sites 86-236 accommodate all camping units, with water and 30-50 amp electric, a picnic table, and a charcoal grill at every site. Pets are permitted only in Area 2, sites 86-164, and campfires are not allowed from May 1 through September 30 because of turtle nesting, with violations subject to a fine. Expect mosquitoes and no-see-ums in warm months, occasional red-tide advisories on Gulf beaches, and largely cashless payment at Pinellas County park facilities, with coin-operated laundry at Fort De Soto.
