Campgrounds and RV parks near Key Colony Beach, FL

The Middle Keys are built around the water. Sombrero Beach in Marathon is the closest full-service public beach, and Sombrero Reef offshore is a top snorkeling and dive site. The Dolphin Research Center on Grassy Key and the Turtle Hospital in Marathon are family favorites. At Curry Hammock State Park, paddlers regularly encounter horseshoe crabs, starfish, upside-down jellyfish, birds, dolphins, and manatees while kayaking. The park protects mangrove swamps, seagrass beds, and rockland hammocks that provide vital habitat for many fish species, and a 1.5-mile nature trail winds through the hardwood hammock to an overlook of Florida Bay. The paved Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail runs roughly 90 miles from Key Largo to Key West and connects directly to Curry Hammock, giving cyclists a flat, scenic route between attractions.

The cooler, drier months from November through April are the most comfortable time to visit the Middle Keys. This is peak season: temperatures are mild, humidity is lower, and mosquitoes are far less active. It is also when campgrounds fill fastest, with the busiest weeks around the winter holidays, Presidents' Day, and spring break. Marathon has a tropical savanna climate with warm winters and hot summers, and a strong seasonal pattern in which summers bring abundant rainfall while winters are noticeably drier. September is the wettest month, averaging around 183 mm across roughly 18 rainy days, while March is one of the driest with about 33 mm. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak activity in August, September, and October. Storm threats can force evacuations of the Keys, and some private parks reduce staffing or close temporarily during named-storm advisories. Travelers booking in late summer or early fall should watch NHC forecasts and confirm cancellation policies before arrival.

Sites in the Keys are compact and often packed tightly, especially at private waterfront resorts. Confirm site length limits before booking a larger rig. Standard RV sites at Sun Outdoors Marathon accommodate rigs up to 34 feet with room for slide-outs, and the resort also has larger sites able to fit 50-foot rigs. Full hookups at Sun Outdoors Marathon include 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, cable, and Wi-Fi. Amenities vary widely between parks. Curry Hammock has a dump station, an ADA-compliant bathhouse with hot showers, and 20/30/50-amp electric, but no laundry and no sewer hookups at individual sites. Private resorts in Marathon typically add pools, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Bring insect repellent, since mosquitoes can be intense during the rainy season, especially near mangroves. Stock up on groceries in Marathon before heading to smaller campgrounds; options thin out south of the Seven Mile Bridge.
