Campgrounds near Lake Mack-Forest Hills, Florida
Lake Mack-Forest Hills is a small census-designated place in northeastern Lake County, Florida, roughly eight miles west of DeLand. The unincorporated community of Forest Hills sits in the center of the CDP, surrounding a small lake of the same name, while Lake Mack Park occupies the southwest part of the CDP. The area sits between the St. Johns River corridor to the east and the Ocala National Forest to the west, giving RV travellers access to both river-based fish camps and forest recreation.
Most of the campgrounds within a short drive are privately owned RV parks and fish camps along the St. Johns River, plus one Florida state park with a developed campground. Highland Park Fish Camp is a 30-acre waterfront campground on the Norris Dead River in DeLand, bordering the 23,000-acre Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge. Highbanks Marina and Camp Resort sits along the St. Johns River on the western edge of Volusia County.
Blue Spring State Park anchors the public-land option, and Luna Sands Resort in Orange City provides a larger private RV park close to the same spring. St Johns Marina Resort adds another river-based site with slips and RV hookups.
Things to do near Lake Mack-Forest Hills
The St. Johns River drives most activity in the area. Highland Park Fish Camp caters to fishing with year-round largemouth bass fishing, guided fishing services, boat rentals featuring bass boats and pontoons, and an on-site tackle shop. Airboat tours, pontoon rentals, and kayak launches are common at the river-based resorts, and the Ocala National Forest across the river adds hiking trails, springs, and wildlife-management-area access.
Blue Spring State Park is the marquee attraction. Swimming in the spring run is open annually from April 1 to November 14, and manatee season runs from November 15 to March 31, when manatees rely on the spring's constant 72 degree water. Once the run reopens, swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, and tubing are allowed, along with boat tours and on-site kayak and canoe rentals. The three-story Thursby House standing near the St. Johns River is a monument to Central Florida's frontier days. Downtown DeLand, roughly ten minutes from most area campgrounds, offers restaurants, shops, and the Athens Theatre for an easy off-river evening.

Winter is the headline season. From mid-November to March, hundreds of manatees congregate in the spring run to seek shelter from the cold, and to provide a safe warm-water refuge for manatees during the winter season, the spring and spring run are closed to all water-related activities including swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving and boating from approximately mid-November through March. Campsites at Blue Spring fill quickly during this window, and snowbird traffic pushes bookings at Luna Sands Resort and Highbanks Marina and Camp Resort well in advance.
Spring and early summer bring warm, drier weather before the rainy season, and the spring run reopens for swimming on April 1. As in other parts of Central Florida, expect cooler winters and hot, humid, and rainy summers. Afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily from June through September, and Atlantic hurricane season peaks in August and September, which can disrupt travel and close waterways.
Fall shoulder season, from late October into November, tends to offer the best combination of lower humidity, thinning crowds, and open water access before the manatees return.

Reservations and booking
Blue Spring State Park uses the Florida State Parks reservation system, and demand is high in winter. Florida residents may make campsite or cabin reservations up to 11 months in advance, and non-Florida residents may make reservations up to 10 months in advance. Same-day reservations can be made before 1 p.m. For reservations, visit the Florida State Parks reservations website or call 800-326-3521 or TDD 888-433-0287. The campground has 51 campsites for RVs up to 40 feet long, located in sand pine scrub within walking distance of the spring.
Private resorts book directly. Highland Park Fish Camp takes reservations by phone at (386) 734-2334, staffed 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. Highbanks Marina and Camp Resort, Luna Sands Resort, and St Johns Marina Resort all take direct reservations by phone or their websites. For winter arrivals, book several months out.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in this area lean rustic and waterfront rather than resort-polished. The Blue Spring campground sits in the sand pine scrub of Volusia County, offering 51 sites for RVs up to 40 feet, each with water and 30-amp electric hookups, a picnic table, grill, and fire ring, with two modern bathhouses providing flush toilets, hot showers, and laundry facilities. There are no sewer hookups at individual sites, although a dump station is available in the park.
Private parks offer more amenities. Highland Park Fish Camp offers 50 sites with full hookups (some 50 amp), tent sites and hot showers, plus cabins and an on-site tackle shop. Luna Sands Resort and Highbanks provide full hookups with 30/50-amp service, and most sites carry enough shade to ease the summer heat.
Expect biting insects in the warm months, alligators in every waterway, and mostly back-in sites that reward smaller-to-mid-size rigs.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Lake Mack-Forest Hills, FL
How much does an RV rental in Lake Mack-Forest Hills typically cost?
Lake Mack-Forest Hills is one of the more affordable launch points for an RV trip in central Florida, since it is a small lakefront community rather than a pricey tourist hub. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs land between $250 and $400 per night. To find a cheap RV rental in Lake Mack-Forest Hills, book mid-week stays, target the May through early June shoulder window before peak summer, and filter for travel trailers with host delivery. Snowbird season (January to March) books up fast, so locking in early saves the most.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Mack-Forest%20Hills%2C%20FloridaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Lake Mack-Forest Hills, FL?
Great news for first-timers: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Lake Mack-Forest Hills. Florida does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers, including the larger Class A coaches on the platform. You will need to be at least 25 years old and upload a valid driver's license during the RVezy booking process so the team can verify your ID. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Pair your home-country license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) before your trip. That is it, you are cleared to cruise toward Ocala National Forest.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental in Lake Mack-Forest Hills protected if something goes wrong?
Yes. Every RV rental in Lake Mack-Forest Hills booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can roll into Ocala National Forest with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most accidental damage to the vehicle, and you choose your coverage level at checkout, so you can pick what fits your comfort zone. If a tire blows on State Road 19 or you need a tow back from Alexander Springs, one call gets help dispatched any time of day or night. It is designed to make sure a small hiccup never derails a great Florida RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change? Can I cancel my Lake Mack-Forest Hills RV booking?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the individual host), and it includes a grace-period window after you book where you can cancel for a full refund, so you are never locked in the moment you confirm. Cancellation outcomes after that depend on factors like how close you are to your trip start date. If a tropical storm threatens your Ocala National Forest week, reach out to RVezy support right away and the team will walk you through your options, including potential refunds or travel credits for host cancellations. Book with confidence and lock in your dates while the best rigs are still available.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Lake Mack-Forest Hills?
Yes. Many hosts on RVezy offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Lake Mack-Forest Hills, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when browsing listings. The surrounding area is wonderfully dog-friendly too: leashed pups are welcome at most Ocala National Forest campgrounds, including Clearwater Lake Recreation Area and Lake Dorr, plus nearby Hontoon Island State Park's day-use areas. Note that Alexander Springs and Juniper Springs swim areas do not allow pets in the water, but the surrounding trails are fair game. Message the host before booking to confirm pet rules and any cleaning fee, then pack a tie-out leash, a portable water bowl, and Florida-specific flea and tick prevention.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/ocala/recreation/camping-cabinsCan the RV be delivered to me in Lake Mack-Forest Hills?
Yes, RV delivery in Lake Mack-Forest Hills is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you are flying into Orlando or Daytona Beach and do not want to drive a big rig your first day. Many RVezy hosts will deliver and set up the RV directly at your campsite, vacation rental, or driveway, which is a lifesaver if it is your first time renting an RV. Popular delivery destinations include Clearwater Lake Recreation Area, Lake Dorr Campground, and Camp Mack on the Kissimmee River. Filter listings by Delivery, then message your host to confirm distance fees (usually a per-mile rate) and the setup walkthrough. You roll up to a fully leveled, stocked rig with hookups already connected.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Mack-Forest%20Hills%2C%20FloridaHow far can I travel from Lake Mack-Forest Hills on a typical RV rental?
You can roam a lot of Florida from here. Most hosts on RVezy include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day) with the option to prepay extra, and some list RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold for a longer Lake Mack-Forest Hills RV trip. From here you are roughly 30 minutes to Blue Spring State Park, 45 minutes to Daytona Beach, about 75 minutes to the Orlando theme parks, around 90 minutes to St. Augustine, and a scenic 2.5 hours to Crystal River for manatee tours. If you are planning a multi-stop loop, ask the host about a bundled mileage package, it is usually cheaper than paying per overage mile.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhere are the best campgrounds near Lake Mack-Forest Hills?
You are sitting on a goldmine of campgrounds. Within 20 minutes you have Clearwater Lake Recreation Area in the southern Ocala National Forest, a peaceful campground with showers near Paisley. About 25 minutes north, Lake Dorr Campground sits under shady oaks with a boat ramp on the lake. Salt Springs Recreation Area (about 45 minutes north) is the only Ocala National Forest campground with full RV hookups, perfect for bigger rigs. Alexander Springs Recreation Area offers a shaded campground steps from a 72°F first-magnitude spring. Slightly farther, Hontoon Island State Park near DeLand makes a beautiful river-access option. For RV camping in Lake Mack-Forest Hills, book Recreation.gov sites up to six months ahead, as they fill quickly in winter.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725When is the best time of year for a Lake Mack-Forest Hills RV trip?
Lake Mack-Forest Hills is a year-round RV destination, but the sweet spot is October through April when daytime highs sit around 70 to 80°F and humidity drops dramatically. November through February averages around 50°F lows and 72°F highs, making it perfect family RV trip weather in Lake Mack-Forest Hills, plus mosquitoes are minimal. March and April bring wildflowers and warm spring-swimming temperatures at Alexander and Juniper Springs. Summer (June through September) is hot and humid (80 to 95°F) with daily afternoon thunderstorms and peak Atlantic hurricane season running June 1 to November 30. Locals know February is a magic month, manatees are still gathered at Blue Spring State Park, the springs are crystal clear, and campgrounds are not yet packed with spring break crowds.
weather.gov/mlb/climateI've never rented an RV before. Will I be able to figure it out?
Yes, and you are going to love how easy it is. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup or delivery: how to level the RV, hook up to water and power, dump the tanks, run the generator, and operate the awning and slides. It usually takes 30 to 45 minutes, and your host's contact info stays in your pocket the whole trip in case you have a question. First time renting an RV? Pick a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer for your debut, and choose a nearby base like Clearwater Lake Recreation Area, just minutes from Lake Mack-Forest Hills, so you can settle in without a long drive. You will be a confident camper by night one.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002342133-Renting-an-RVWhat happens if I have a breakdown during my Lake Mack-Forest Hills RV trip?
You are never on your own out there. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so whether you have a flat tire on State Road 19, run out of fuel between Paisley and Astor, or need a tow off a sandy forest road, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy messaging system for quick questions about quirks specific to their rig. Cell service can get patchy deep inside Ocala National Forest near Hopkins Prairie and the Juniper Wilderness, so download offline Google Maps and screenshot your host's contact info before you leave pavement.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lake Mack-Forest Hills RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
You have plenty of road open to you. Most RVezy hosts in Florida allow interstate travel, so a Lake Mack-Forest Hills RV trip can easily roll up to Georgia's Cumberland Island, west to the Alabama Gulf Coast, or south to the Florida Keys. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the specific host and the protection plan, so message your host directly before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Popular RV road trip routes from Lake Mack-Forest Hills include the roughly 4-hour drive to Key Largo, the 3-hour run to St. Petersburg beaches, and the scenic loop to Savannah, Georgia.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Lake Mack-Forest Hills RV trip?
Easy to plan for. Florida gas prices typically run near the national average, often in the $3.00 to $3.50 per gallon range in the Lake County area. Travel trailers do not burn fuel themselves, you just pay for your tow vehicle (8 to 14 mpg). Class C motorhomes average 8 to 10 mpg, and big Class A rigs land around 6 to 8 mpg. For a 300-mile week exploring Ocala National Forest and Daytona Beach in a Class C, budget roughly $115 to $135 in fuel. Fill up at larger stations in Eustis or DeLand before heading into the forest, as prices inside small forest hamlets like Astor and Paisley can be noticeably higher per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Lake Mack-Forest Hills?
The earlier the better. Ocala National Forest campgrounds like Alexander Springs, Salt Springs, Clearwater Lake, and Lake Dorr open reservations up to six months ahead on Recreation.gov, and winter weekends (December through March) often fill the day they open. Florida State Parks (Hontoon Island, Blue Spring, Tomoka) use FloridaStateParks.org and are bookable 11 months out, and Blue Spring fills almost instantly during manatee season. Private RV parks like Camp Mack and Wilderness RV Resort are usually easier, 30 to 60 days out works fine. Set a calendar alert for exactly 11 months before your target date at 8:00 a.m. Eastern, that is when state park sites release and the prime waterfront spots disappear in minutes.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are the driving conditions like around Lake Mack-Forest Hills?
Driving here is refreshingly relaxed compared to big-city Florida. Lake Mack-Forest Hills sits along quiet two-lane roads in Lake County, with State Road 19 as your main artery north into Ocala National Forest and south to Eustis. Roads are flat, well-paved, and easy for first-time RV drivers. Watch for a few specifics: afternoon summer thunderstorms can dump heavy rain (pull over and wait it out), deer and the occasional Florida black bear cross forest roads at dawn and dusk, and some forest service roads are deep sand, so stick to paved routes in larger rigs. Heading toward Orlando? Avoid Interstate 4 during the 4 to 6 p.m. rush. Otherwise, easy cruising all the way.
fl511.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Lake Mack-Forest Hills?
You will find a great range. Salt Springs Recreation Area is the only Ocala National Forest campground with full RV hookups (water, electric, sewer), making it ideal for longer stays. Alexander Springs, Juniper Springs, Clearwater Lake, and Lake Dorr offer water and electric at many sites with on-site dump stations, hot showers, and potable water fill-ups. Hontoon Island State Park and Blue Spring State Park have water and electric sites, dump stations, and bathhouses. For dry camping with vault toilets only, try Hopkins Prairie or Lake Delancey. Looking for where to park an RV in Lake Mack-Forest Hills with full hookups outside the forest? Wilderness RV Resort in Silver Springs and Orange City RV Resort both deliver 30/50 amp service, pools, and laundry.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234077What's actually inside the RVs available in Lake Mack-Forest Hills?
More than you would expect. A typical motorhome rental in Lake Mack-Forest Hills on RVezy comes fully equipped: queen or king bed, bunk options in family rigs, full kitchen (fridge/freezer, microwave, propane stove, sink, coffee maker), a bathroom with toilet and shower, dining area, roof AC (essential in Florida), furnace, and a TV. Many include a generator or solar setup for boondocking in Ocala National Forest, plus seatbelted seats for safe travel. Many hosts throw in linens, kitchenware, outdoor chairs, and a hose/sewer kit. A campervan rental in Lake Mack-Forest Hills (Class B) trims things down but still includes a bed, kitchenette, and often a wet bath. Check each listing's amenity list, and message the host if you need anything specific like a portable crib or kayak rack.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Mack-Forest%20Hills%2C%20FloridaWhat add-ons and pickup options do hosts offer in Lake Mack-Forest Hills?
Lots of useful extras to customize your trip. Common RVezy host add-ons in the Lake Mack-Forest Hills area include camp chairs and tables, bedding and towel packages, generators, bike racks, paddleboards or kayaks (a huge perk near Alexander Springs), and pre-stocked kitchen kits. Many hosts offer flexible pickup windows, and delivery to nearby campgrounds like Clearwater Lake, Lake Dorr, or Camp Mack typically runs a per-mile rate set by the host. Mileage policies vary, expect roughly 100 to 150 free miles per day with optional unlimited mileage upgrades for longer road trips. Bundle delivery, setup, and a kayak rental and you have a turnkey rent an RV in Lake Mack-Forest Hills experience with zero hassle.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Mack-Forest%20Hills%2C%20FloridaHow does the security deposit and payment work for RV rental Florida bookings?
Simple and transparent. When you book an RV rental in Florida through RVezy, you pay the full rental amount securely through the platform, never directly to the host in cash. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value) and released after your trip, usually within a few days, as long as the RV comes back in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues on your Lake Mack-Forest Hills RV trip, take timestamped photos of the interior and exterior at pickup and dropoff, dump the tanks before return (or pay the host's dump fee), and refill propane and fuel to the original levels.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best RV road trip routes from Lake Mack-Forest Hills?
You are perfectly placed for classic Florida road trips. The Ocala National Forest loop via State Road 19 and State Road 40 hits Alexander Springs, Juniper Springs, and Salt Springs in one unforgettable day. Head south to Orlando theme parks for a family RV trip Lake Mack-Forest Hills favorite. The drive northeast to St. Augustine delivers historic charm and beachfront camping at Anastasia State Park. Manatee lovers should make the run west to Crystal River. For a bigger adventure, the cruise south to Key Largo opens up the Florida Keys. Do a counterclockwise Ocala loop and you will hit the busy Alexander Springs swim hole early before the afternoon crowd rolls in.
