Camping near Lake Placid, Florida
Lake Placid sits in Highlands County in south-central Florida, roughly halfway between Tampa and the Atlantic coast. Known as the 'Caladium Capital of the World,' the town is about 100 miles southeast of Tampa and 111 to 144 miles south of Orlando, depending on the route. The surrounding area is defined by 27 freshwater lakes, including 28,000-acre Lake Istokpoga, making it a fishing and boating destination rather than a coastal one.
RV renters have several established resorts within a short drive of downtown. Camp Florida RV Resort and Sunshine RV Resort cater primarily to the snowbird market with concrete pads, pools, and organized activities. Lake Josephine RV Resort provides direct lakefront access with private docks and a boat ramp. Buttonwood Bay RV Resort adds cabin accommodations alongside standard RV sites.
For a state-park experience, Highlands Hammock State Park lies four miles west of Sebring in Highlands County, off U.S. 27, about a 15-minute drive from Lake Placid. The park offers old-growth hammock, tram tours, and a family campground when open.
Things to do around Lake Placid
Fishing is the headline activity. Lake Istokpoga is known widely for largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie fishing, and boat ramps at Lake Istokpoga Park and lakefront resorts give RV renters easy water access.
In town, the murals are a low-cost family activity. Thousands of visitors come each year to see dozens of historic murals downtown, and painted trash containers serve as companion pieces along the streets. Toby's Clown School and Museum and the Lake Placid Historical Society Depot Museum add rainy-day options.
For nature, Lake June-in-Winter Scrub State Park offers short trails through scrub habitat, and Highlands Hammock State Park has nine trails including an elevated boardwalk through a cypress swamp, a 3-mile bike loop, and a tram tour. The annual Caladium Festival draws crowds downtown each summer.

Most campgrounds in the area operate year-round, though the winter months from November through April represent the peak season when northern visitors escape colder climates. Snowbird resorts fill up for extended January through March stays, and monthly sites often book many months out. Reserve early if targeting this window.
Spring brings warm, drier weather and lower humidity, and it is a strong time for birding at Highlands Hammock. Peak season at the state park runs from October through May, when ranger-led guided tours and campfire circles are held in the park, and tram tours run daily.
Summer is hot, humid, and wet. July and August average highs near 89.8°F with high humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily. It overlaps with Atlantic hurricane season, which peaks August through October. Prolonged drought conditions have triggered a Highlands County burn ban, and all campfires are prohibited, including all grills on the ground. Check current fire restrictions before arrival.
Booking and reservation tips
Private RV resorts around Lake Placid, including Camp Florida RV Resort, Sunshine RV Resort, Lake Josephine RV Resort, and Buttonwood Bay RV Resort, take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Winter monthly and seasonal stays fill first: contact parks by late spring for the following January through March.
For Highlands Hammock State Park, book through the Florida State Parks reservation system. Reservations are made via the Florida State Parks Reservation website, with Florida residents able to book 11 months in advance and non-residents 10 months in advance; sites can fill fast, especially over holiday weekends, so book at least three months ahead. Note that the Youth Camp is currently the only camping available at Highlands Hammock State Park, and all other camping is unavailable, so confirm status before planning a stay there.
What to expect on-site
Most private RV resorts in the Lake Placid area lean toward the 55-plus snowbird demographic, with clubhouses, shuffleboard, pools, and organized social calendars. Sites are typically level with concrete or paved pads and full hookups, and many resorts are big-rig friendly. Wi-Fi and laundry are standard at private parks.
At Highlands Hammock State Park, expect a different feel. The campground has water and electric hookups and an on-site dump station, plus four restroom buildings with hot showers, laundry facilities, a dishwashing area, and a recreation hall. Wi-Fi is not available in the campground but can be accessed at the Hammock Inn Concession. Sites range from open and sunny to partially or fully shaded beneath ancient live oaks and cabbage palms, with lengths varying from 20 to 50 feet.
Expect mosquitoes and biting insects near water, especially in warmer months. Alligators are present in most area lakes and canals: keep pets and children back from shorelines.

The full cancellation terms are shown during checkout and in your RVezy account. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credits so your plans aren't derailed. Pro tip: book your Lake Placid RV trip early to lock in the best rigs around the July Caladium Festival, then use the grace period to finalize your plans with confidence.

floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/highlands-hammock-state-parkWhen is the best time to take an RV trip to Lake Placid, FL?
The sweet spot for a Lake Placid RV trip is November through April, when daytime highs run a comfortable 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, humidity drops, and mosquitoes back off. This is peak snowbird season, so book your motorhome rental in Lake Placid early. Spring (March and April) is gorgeous for blooming caladium fields and wildflowers, while summer brings highs in the low 90s, daily afternoon thunderstorms, and Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 through November 30). The annual Caladium Festival in late July is worth braving the heat for. Pro tip: shoulder months like October and May give you warm lake swimming weather without the winter crowds, and rental prices are noticeably lower.
weather.gov/tbw/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Lake Placid?
You've got this. First time renting an RV in Lake Placid is genuinely easy because the area is built for it: flat terrain, wide rural highways like US-27 and SR-70, and very little big-city traffic. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving tips, the kitchen, slide-outs, holding tanks, and how to hook up at the campground, so you're never left guessing. You can also message your host with questions before booking, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy protection plan. Pro tip: start with a travel trailer towed and set up by your host, or a Class C motorhome under 28 feet, for the most relaxed introduction to RVing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Help is a phone call away, day or night. Every RVezy booking in Lake Placid includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing are all covered no matter where you are along US-27 or out near Lake Istokpoga. Your host is also your first call for anything specific to their rig, like how the awning retracts or where the propane shutoff lives, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's number in your phone before pickup, so you can text from the campsite if you need a quick hand.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I drive my Lake Placid RV rental to other states or into Canada or Mexico?
Yes, you can take your RV rental in Florida on a multi-state road trip. Lake Placid is a popular jump-off point for Georgia, the Carolinas, and even all the way north toward the Smokies. Travel into Canada is sometimes allowed with advance host approval and confirmation of insurance coverage, so message the host directly from the listing to ask. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: popular runs from Lake Placid include the Florida Keys (about 5 hours south) and Savannah, Georgia (about 6 hours north), both of which stay well within U.S. borders.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will I spend on fuel during a Lake Placid RV trip?

Class B campervans get around 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A motorhomes typically get 6 to 10 mpg. Florida gas prices generally track close to the national average, and convenient fill-ups near Lake Placid are usually along US-27 in Sebring and Avon Park. Pro tip: a 200-mile round trip to Sarasota in a Class C will run roughly $80 to $100 in fuel at current prices, so plan accordingly and top off in Sebring before heading toward the coast.

For the best campgrounds near Lake Placid, book as early as you can, especially between November and April. Florida State Parks like Highlands Hammock open reservations 11 months ahead for Florida residents and 10 months ahead for out-of-state visitors through the official Florida State Parks reservation site, and popular weekends sell out within hours. Private parks like Camp Florida Resort and Sunshine RV Resort take direct bookings on their own websites and typically fill up 2 to 3 months ahead in winter. Pro tip: if Highlands Hammock is sold out, set a cancellation alert and check the Florida State Parks site at 8 a.m. daily, since cancellations release in real time.

US-27 is the main north-south corridor, with two lanes each way, generous shoulders, and gentle terrain since the area sits at just over 100 feet elevation. The biggest things to watch for are sudden afternoon thunderstorms in summer (pull over and wait it out), occasional wildlife on rural roads at dawn and dusk near Lake Istokpoga, and slower-moving farm vehicles around the caladium and citrus fields. There are no mountain passes, tight tunnels, or low-clearance hazards to worry about. Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Florida through RVezy, you pay the trip cost through the platform via credit card, never in cash to the host. Deposit amounts vary by RV type and host, with typical ranges from $500 for smaller travel trailers up to $1,500 for larger Class A motorhomes. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick video of the RV inside and out at both pickup and drop-off in Lake Placid, so you have a clear record and your deposit comes back fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I stay comfortable in an RV during a hot Lake Placid summer?
Summer in Lake Placid is hot and humid, with highs in the low 90s from June through September, but the right RV makes it easy. Choose a rig with strong roof air conditioning (most have it) and pick a campsite with afternoon shade, like the oak-canopied loops at Highlands Hammock State Park or shaded lakeside sites along Lake Grassy. Plug into 50-amp shore power whenever possible so you can run AC nonstop without worrying about battery drain. Pro tip: schedule outdoor activities like mural touring, fishing on Lake Istokpoga, or hiking at Lake June-in-Winter Scrub State Park before 10 a.m. or after 5 p.m., and use midday for AC, naps, and a swim in the campground pool.
