Campgrounds and RV parks near Lawtey, FL

Outdoor activity in the area centers on freshwater lakes, spring runs, and pine flatwoods. At Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park, visitors can hike a segment of the Florida National Scenic Trail, swim or fish in Little Lake Johnson, and paddle canoes on the park's lakes. The park's ravines and longleaf pine sandhills give the landscape a look distinct from much of the rest of Florida. Day trips from Lawtey reach Gainesville for museums and University of Florida attractions, Jacksonville for the St. Johns River and Atlantic beaches, and the Santa Fe and Ichetucknee rivers for tubing and paddling. Equestrian travelers can use D&R RV Park & Equine Training Center as a base for riding.

North-central Florida has a humid subtropical climate with mild, drier winters and hot, wet summers. Fall through spring is the busiest RV season locally. Cooler nights, lower humidity, and reduced mosquito activity from late October through April draw the strongest bookings, and holiday weekends at state parks fill early. Summer brings daily afternoon thunderstorms, high humidity, and heat indices that regularly climb into the triple digits. Rain totals peak from June through September, with August often the wettest month. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk of storm impacts from August through October; travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories and be ready to reroute. Winter can bring occasional freezes, so RV renters should confirm that water hookups are freeze-protected or use onboard tanks during cold snaps. Spring wildflowers bloom in the sandhills at Gold Head Branch, and controlled burns are common on public land during the cooler months.

Sites near Lawtey range from full-hookup pull-throughs at private RV resorts to shaded, water-and-electric sites at Gold Head Branch State Park. State park loops generally accommodate mid-size rigs, though longer sites are limited and should be requested at booking. Most private parks in the area offer 30 and 50 amp service, dump stations, and Wi-Fi of varying reliability. Expect sandy soils, longleaf pine and live oak canopy, and warm nights in summer. Insects, including mosquitoes and biting flies, are active from spring through fall, so screens and repellent are essential. Cell coverage is generally solid along US 301 and I-10 corridors but can weaken inside the state park. Pets are welcome at most campgrounds with standard leash rules.
