Camping near Marathon, Florida
Marathon sits in the Middle Keys along the Overseas Highway (U.S. 1), roughly halfway between Key Largo and Key West. Curry Hammock State Park is located near mile marker 56 just outside Marathon, and it anchors the area's state-park camping. The campground has 28 sites that accommodate both tents and RVs, with gravel pads and 20/30/50-amp electrical service. Each site includes a picnic table, water, a charcoal grill, and hammock posts, and some sites have an ocean view. The campground has an ADA-compliant bathhouse with hot showers and a dump station, though there are no sewer hookups at individual sites.
Private RV resorts fill in around the state park. Marathon Marina and RV Resort, Grassy Key RV Park And Resort, Sun Outdoors Marathon, and Jolly Roger RV Resort all offer full-hookup sites within a short drive of downtown Marathon, and most sit directly on the water. Jolly Roger's sites include 30/50-amp full hookups, Wi-Fi, a laundry room, and restrooms with hot showers.
The area works well as a base for exploring the Middle Keys, with Sombrero Beach, the Seven Mile Bridge, and the Turtle Hospital all within town.
Things to do around Marathon
Water activities dominate. Kayaking and paddleboarding are popular at Curry Hammock State Park, where the shallow waters are usually calm with gentle currents. Paddlers can explore a mangrove tunnel loop, circle the island of Deer Key, or head to a nearby sandbar to spot fish, turtles, and the occasional nurse shark. Snorkeling on the park's seagrass flat is a good warm-up before heading to the offshore reef, and fishing charters run out of local marinas year-round.
On land, the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail is a paved path running roughly 90 miles from Key Largo to Key West, and Curry Hammock provides direct access. A 1.5-mile nature trail winds through a hardwood hammock. Family stops in town include the Turtle Hospital, the Dolphin Research Center, Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters, and Crane Point Museum.

- winter
December - February
77° / 66°F 47 mmPeak season; dry and mild, sites book months out.
The most comfortable time to visit is during the cooler, drier months from November through April. This is peak season across the Keys, with warm days, lower humidity, and minimal storm risk. Winter demand is heavy at Curry Hammock and the private resorts alike, and sites often fill within minutes of the reservation window opening. Florida residents get a head start, with the state-park booking window opening one month earlier for them than for out-of-state visitors.
Late spring and summer bring heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms. Storms typically develop in the afternoon, drop heavy rain briefly, and then clear. Bugs are a real consideration: mosquitoes and no-see-ums can be bad at dawn and dusk, particularly near the mangroves and along the nature trail.
Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and activity in the Keys peaks in September and October. Travelers in those months should monitor National Hurricane Center forecasts, build flexibility into their itinerary, and confirm cancellation policies before booking.

How to book
Curry Hammock State Park books through the Florida State Parks reservation system at reserve.floridastateparks.org or by phone at 800-326-3521. Florida residents can reserve up to 11 months in advance; non-residents can reserve up to 10 months in advance. Winter sites at the Keys parks are highly competitive, so out-of-state visitors should set a calendar reminder for their 10-month release date at 8 a.m. Eastern Time. Reservations made at the start of the window cannot be changed for 18 days.
Private parks such as Marathon Marina and RV Resort, Grassy Key RV Park And Resort, Sun Outdoors Marathon, and Jolly Roger RV Resort book directly through their own websites or by phone. Winter stays typically sell out months ahead, and holiday weekends often carry multi-night minimums with a deposit taken at the time of booking.
What to expect
Sites in Marathon are compact by mainland standards. Curry Hammock does not offer full hookups; there is no sewer connection at the sites, but a dump station is available within the campground. Sites are well leveled with some vegetation between them for a sense of privacy, and gravel pads can accommodate RVs up to roughly 70 feet. Private resorts generally offer full hookups with 30/50-amp service, Wi-Fi, pools, and boat access.
Expect saltwater, sun, and wind. Pets are allowed on leash in most areas at Curry Hammock but are not permitted on the swimming beach or in the bathhouses. Cell coverage is reliable along U.S. 1. Groceries are available in Marathon, a short drive north on U.S. 1 from Curry Hammock, and there are no food vendors inside the state park. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, bug spray, and shade.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Marathon, FL
How much does an RV rental in Marathon, FL typically cost?
An RV rental in Marathon, FL is more affordable than many expect for a Florida Keys getaway. On RVezy, travel trailers average around $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $300, and campervans for couples often land in the $130 to $200 range. Peak prices hit during the December through April snowbird season, so booking 3 to 6 months ahead locks in the best rates. For a cheap RV rental Marathon trip, target May, late September, or early November shoulder weeks when nightly rates drop noticeably. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book to compare prices fast, and message hosts about weekly discounts. Many Marathon owners offer 10 to 20 percent off stays of 5 nights or more.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Marathon%2C%20FloridaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Marathon, FL?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Marathon, FL. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement is required for any motorhome or trailer on RVezy, and the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles does not require one for personal RV use. Approved renters on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and ID is verified inside the booking platform, so there is no awkward paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP), available from your local auto association. Most first-timers are amazed at how simple the Marathon RV trip approval process really is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat's included to protect me during my Marathon RV trip?
You're never alone on the road. Every motorhome rental in Marathon booked on RVezy includes a renter protection plan that covers most damage to the vehicle, plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on the Seven Mile Bridge or a dead battery at Sombrero Beach is a quick phone call away from being solved. RVezy offers multiple protection tiers, and you choose the level of coverage that fits you at checkout, not the host. This delivers real financial peace of mind so you can focus on snorkeling Sombrero Reef instead of worst-case scenarios. Pro tip: select your protection level the moment you book so you can fully relax the second your trip begins.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Marathon RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, and there is a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in dates with confidence. If a named hurricane or tropical storm threatens the Florida Keys (which sit in an active zone June 1 through November 30), RVezy support works with you on options, since the Overseas Highway is the only road in and out and evacuation orders do happen. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel, and full details live in your booking summary and the RVezy Help Center. Pro tip: book early, then watch the National Hurricane Center forecast as your trip approaches.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Marathon, FL?
Absolutely, your pup is welcome in the Keys. Plenty of pet-friendly RV rental Marathon options are just one filter click away on RVezy, and many hosts welcome dogs with no extra fee while others charge a small pet cleaning fee of $25 to $75. Marathon is one of the most dog-friendly stretches of the Keys: Sombrero Beach has a designated dog-walking area on the south end, Curry Hammock State Park welcomes leashed pets on trails, and waterfront restaurants like Sparky's Landing and Castaway Waterfront have dog-friendly patios. Heads-up: Bahia Honda State Park does not allow pets on the beaches themselves, only in limited areas. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm dog size and breed are a fit.
floridastateparks.org/learn/pet-policyCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Marathon?
Yes, and it is a game-changer for first-time renters. RV delivery in Marathon is one of the most popular options on RVezy, with many local hosts offering to drive your motorhome or travel trailer directly to campgrounds like Sun Outdoors Marathon, Grassy Key RV Park, Jolly Roger Travel Park, or Bahia Honda State Park, then level it, hook up water, electric, and sewer, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are set by the host and typically include a per-mile rate from their location, with many capping at a flat rate for Marathon-area drop-offs. This is the easiest way to enjoy a Marathon RV trip without driving the rig yourself, especially helpful crossing the Seven Mile Bridge. Pro tip: ask your host about setup demo time so you start vacation feeling confident.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Marathon%2C%20FloridaHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive on a Marathon RV trip?
You've got real flexibility. Marathon-based RVezy hosts set their own mileage policies, with many offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and several offering RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for exploring up and down the Overseas Highway. Mileage is shown clearly on every listing before you book. Real distances from Marathon: Key West is about 50 miles (1 hour 15 minutes), Bahia Honda State Park is 13 miles (20 minutes), Islamorada is 30 miles (45 minutes), Key Largo is 55 miles (1 hour 15 minutes), and Everglades National Park's Flamingo entrance is about 130 miles (3 hours). Pro tip: if you plan to base in Marathon and day-trip by car or scooter rental, a lower mileage cap saves money. Going Keys-wide? Filter for unlimited miles.
fdot.gov/agencyresources/keysWhere are the best campgrounds near Marathon, FL for an RV?
You're spoiled for choice with waterfront campgrounds. The best campgrounds near Marathon for RV camping Marathon include Bahia Honda State Park at MM 36.8 (natural white-sand beaches, full hookups at Buttonwood Campground, sites up to 50 feet), Sun Outdoors Marathon on Grassy Key at MM 59 (300 feet of waterfront on Florida Bay, heated pool, boat slips), Grassy Key RV Park & Resort at MM 58.7 (big-rig friendly, premium waterfront sites, 30 and 50 amp), Jolly Roger Travel Park at MM 59.3 (laid-back, full hookups, marina), and Coconut Cay RV Resort (boutique 25-site park with sunset beach on the Gulf). All offer water, electric, and sewer. Pro tip: oceanside sites at Bahia Honda's Buttonwood Campground are the crown jewel and book exactly 11 months out.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/bahia-honda-state-park/experiences-amenitiesWhen is the best time to visit Marathon, FL in an RV?
Honestly, there's no bad time, but December through April is the sweet spot. Winter highs sit comfortably in the mid-70s to low 80s with low humidity, and water temperatures stay around 70 to 75°F, making it the premier U.S. winter RV destination. March through May offers the same warm sunshine, slightly warmer water for snorkeling, and lighter crowds. Summer (June through August) brings highs near 90°F, daily afternoon thunderstorms, and Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 to November 30), with September the wettest month. September and October are the cheapest months, with rental prices often 30 to 40 percent lower. Pro tip: aim for the second half of April or first half of May for the rare combo of warm reef water, dry weather, and post-snowbird value.
weather.gov/key/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in the Keys?
You've got this, and Marathon is one of the most forgiving places to learn. The Overseas Highway (US 1) is mostly a straight, flat, two-lane road with a 55 mph limit and stunning ocean views on both sides, so first time renting an RV here often feels easier than driving in your hometown. Every RVezy host provides an in-person walkthrough at pickup, demonstrating the slide-outs, water system, generator, and dash systems, and they're a text away during your trip. The famous Seven Mile Bridge is wide and well-maintained, with a 55 foot vertical clearance that easily handles any RV. Pro tip: if city or bridge driving still feels intimidating, book a host who offers delivery and skip the wheel entirely, leaving you free to enjoy your Marathon RV trip.
fdot.gov/safety/14-driving-tips/driving-tipsWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road in the Florida Keys?
Help is one call away, 24/7. Every RVezy booking with a protection plan includes around-the-clock roadside assistance, covering issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. The Overseas Highway has regular pull-offs and service stations between Florida City and Key West, and Marathon itself is the largest service hub in the Middle Keys with mechanics and tow operators on Vaca Key. Your RVezy host is also reachable directly by message for anything system-specific, like retracting the awning or restarting the generator. RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone the moment you book so it is ready before you ever need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are popular road trip routes from Marathon, FL?
The Overseas Highway practically dares you to keep driving. The classic RV road trip from Marathon heads 50 miles south to Key West (1.25 hours) for sunset at Mallory Square; the northbound run hits Islamorada in 45 minutes for the History of Diving Museum, then Key Largo in 1.25 hours for John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. From Marathon, Everglades National Park's Flamingo Visitor Center is about 3 hours via Florida City, and Miami's South Beach is roughly 3 hours (160 miles). Want a bigger loop? Naples and the Gulf Coast are 4 hours via Tamiami Trail (US 41). Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, but the entire Florida peninsula is yours to explore. Pro tip: drive the Keys leg in the morning to beat afternoon storms and traffic.
nps.gov/ever/planyourvisit/directions.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Marathon RV trip?
Fuel is easier to budget than you might expect. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, campervans 16 to 20, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg). South Florida gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, and Marathon stations sit among the highest in the state because of island logistics, so fill up in Florida City before crossing into the Keys when possible. A round trip from Marathon to Key West and back (about 100 miles) costs roughly $35 to $55 in fuel for a typical Class C. Pro tip: plan diesel fill-ups in Florida City or Homestead, where larger truck stops handle big rigs more easily than smaller island stations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground in Marathon?
Earlier is better, but you have options. For winter peak season (December through April), book Bahia Honda State Park up to 11 months in advance the moment the reservation window opens on the Florida State Parks site, because oceanfront Buttonwood sites sell out quickly. Private parks like Sun Outdoors Marathon, Grassy Key RV Park, Jolly Roger, and Coconut Cay typically need 3 to 6 months for winter weekends, and 2 to 4 weeks in summer and early fall. Curry Hammock State Park, just east of Marathon, is another small state-park gem that also benefits from booking 11 months out. Pro tip: if Bahia Honda is sold out, set a cancellation alert and check back regularly when no-shows are released into inventory.
reserve.floridastateparks.org/What are the local driving conditions like along the Overseas Highway?
Driving is more relaxed than many expect. The Overseas Highway (US 1) from Florida City to Key West is roughly 113 miles, mostly two lanes with frequent passing zones, a 55 mph speed limit (lower through Marathon's commercial stretch), and wide, well-maintained bridges including the Seven Mile Bridge. Crosswinds can pick up on longer spans, so ease off the throttle when gusts hit and keep both hands on the wheel. There are no mountains, tunnels, or steep grades anywhere in the Keys. Watch for cyclists, especially near Marathon and Big Pine Key, and slow down for the Key Deer Refuge area around Big Pine. Pro tip: avoid Sunday afternoon northbound traffic out of the Keys, which can back up around Tavernier and Key Largo.
fdot.gov/What amenities will I find at Marathon-area campgrounds?
Most are full-resort waterfront experiences. Marathon-area RV parks like Sun Outdoors Marathon, Grassy Key RV Park, and Coconut Cay offer full hookups (30 and 50 amp electric, water, sewer), free WiFi, heated pools, laundry, on-site marinas with boat slips, dog parks, and bathhouses with hot showers. Bahia Honda State Park's Buttonwood Campground offers water, electricity, picnic tables, grills, hot showers, and a dump station, plus access to the only natural sand beaches in the Keys. Need to fill freshwater or dump tanks between stays? Both Bahia Honda and Curry Hammock State Park have public dump stations, and most private parks let day-use travelers dump for a $10 to $20 fee. Pro tip: book a waterfront site (Buttonwood sites 12 to 25) for sunset views you'll remember forever.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/bahia-honda-state-park/hours-feesWhat features and amenities come in a typical Marathon RV rental?
Way more comforts than you'd think. A typical campervan rental Marathon or motorhome on RVezy comes fully equipped: real beds (usually sleeping 2 to 8), a kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, dinette seating with seatbelts for travel, roof and dash air conditioning (essential in the Keys), house batteries, and often a generator for off-grid power. Many include flat-screen TVs, Bluetooth stereos, outdoor showers (perfect after Sombrero Beach), and bike racks. WiFi varies, so most travelers use a phone hotspot or rely on campground WiFi at parks like Coconut Cay. Pro tip: filter listings by sleeps count and check for the air conditioning icon, then message the host about generator hours, which most parks limit to daytime.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rv-safetyWhat popular add-ons can I book with my Marathon RV?
Hosts make it easy to fully outfit your trip. Popular add-ons for an RV rental in Marathon, FL include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits with pots, plates, and utensils, camp chairs and outdoor mats, bike racks with beach cruisers, paddleboards and kayaks, generator usage, propane refills, and the very popular delivery and setup service. Pickup and dropoff times are set by the host on each listing, with many offering 1 p.m. pickup and 11 a.m. return, and some allow early or late swaps for a small fee. Pro tip: bundle linens, kitchen, and beach gear at booking so you can fly into Miami or Key West International and arrive empty-handed, ready for your Marathon RV trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Marathon%2C%20FloridaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Simple and transparent. When you book an RV rental in Marathon, FL on RVezy, your payment is processed securely through the platform, never directly to the host, with major credit cards accepted. The host sets a refundable security deposit, which is placed as a hold separate from your booking payment around the start of your trip and released after the RV is returned in the same condition. Cleaning fees, mileage overages, and any add-ons you selected are itemized clearly during checkout. Pro tip: take a quick video walk-around of the RV with your host at pickup and dropoff, including the generator hour meter and odometer. This protects everyone and helps your deposit come back fast.
