Campgrounds near North Key Largo

North Key Largo sits at the northern end of the Florida Keys, roughly an hour south of Miami along US-1. The area functions as the entry point to the Keys for road-trippers driving down from the mainland, and RV sites cluster along the Overseas Highway between the mangrove preserves and the reef line offshore. Options range from full-hookup private resorts to a single state-park campground. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, located in Key Largo about 60 miles south of Miami, was the first undersea park established in the United States. Private parks in the corridor include Keys Palms RV Resort, Kings Kamp RV Park, Marina, Hotel Rooms, Key Largo Campground and Marina, and Sun Outdoors Key Largo, several of which combine RV sites with marina access and boat ramps. Most sites are on coral rock fill rather than grass, and lots tend to be compact by mainland standards. Renters bringing larger Class A or fifth-wheel rigs should confirm site length and turning radius before booking, since Keys parks were largely laid out for smaller trailers.

Things to do near North Key Largo

Snorkeling and diving on the offshore reef tract are the primary draws. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park encompasses approximately 70 nautical square miles, and while the mangrove swamps and tropical hammocks in the upland areas are worth exploring, it is the coral reefs and marine life that bring most visitors. The reef can be viewed from a glass-bottom boat tour or up close by scuba diving or snorkeling, and divers can visit the bronze Christ of the Abyss statue in the park's waters. On land, options include short nature trails through tropical hammock, a visitor-center aquarium with a 30,000-gallon saltwater tank, and paddling through mangrove creeks. Canoeing and kayaking are popular, fishing is permitted in designated areas, and visitors can walk short trails, picnic, or swim at the beach. Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge and Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park sit just to the north for wildlife viewing and paved bike paths.

The Upper Keys have two clear seasons: a dry, mild winter and a hot, wet summer. The recommended window to visit John Pennekamp is between December and March, when the weather is milder and water visibility is high. This is also peak season for RV travel, and both private parks and the state-park campground fill early. Spring, from March into May, offers warm water without the deepest summer humidity, though bookings remain tight through spring break. Summer brings daily thunderstorms, warm seas, and calm snorkeling conditions in the mornings, along with mosquitos and heat indices well above the air temperature. Fall overlaps with the peak of hurricane season. Impacts from stronger hurricanes are most common during September and October, which are considered peak months for tropical formations in the Atlantic basin. Monroe County, home to the Florida Keys, has been impacted by more tropical storms and hurricanes than any other county in the United States. Renters traveling in September or October should book refundable sites where possible and monitor National Hurricane Center advisories.

How to book a campsite near North Key Largo

The state-park site and the private resorts use different systems. Reservations at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park can be made up to 11 months in advance for Florida residents and 10 months in advance for non-residents, through the Florida State Parks reservation system. The park has one campground with roughly 47 sites, so peak season books quickly. Booking on the first day the window opens is the practical way to secure winter and holiday dates. Private parks such as Keys Palms RV Resort, Kings Kamp RV Park, Marina, Hotel Rooms, Key Largo Campground and Marina, and Sun Outdoors Key Largo take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, often with multi-night minimums and non-refundable deposits during peak season. For last-minute winter trips, cancellation-scanning services can help pick up released state-park sites, but travelers should have a private-park backup lined up.

What to expect on-site

Sites in the Keys are tight. Campsites at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park sit close together on coral-rock and gravel pads that can be uncomfortable for tent campers without sleeping pads or cots. RVs dominate the loops, and neighbors are within earshot. Private resorts along US-1 offer full hookups, laundry, pools, and marina access, but lot sizes are similarly compact. Wildlife is part of the experience. Iguanas, ibis, and raccoons wander through most campgrounds, and food should be stored securely. Mosquitos and no-see-ums are constant in the warmer months, so screens and repellent are essential. Cell coverage along US-1 is generally reliable, though Wi-Fi quality varies by park. Groceries, fuel, dive shops, and boat rentals are all within a short drive along the Overseas Highway in Key Largo proper.
