Campgrounds and RV parks near Tavernier, FL

Tavernier sits at the south end of the island of Key Largo in the Upper Florida Keys, roughly an hour to an hour and a half south of Miami along US-1, the Overseas Highway. Tavernier shares the island with Key Largo to the northeast and North Key Largo further north, and functions as a quieter base for RV travelers who want reef access without the pace of Key West. RV options cluster along a short stretch of the Overseas Highway. Closest to town, Blue Fin Rock Harbor RV Park and Marina and Key Largo Campground and Marina sit on the water with boat access. Sun Outdoors Key Largo and Sun Outdoors Islamorada bracket the destination to the north and south with resort-style amenities. For a state-park setting, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park offers full-hookup and water-electric sites in a tropical hammock a few miles north. John Pennekamp is the first undersea park in the United States and covers roughly 70 nautical square miles of reef, mangrove, and seagrass. Most itineraries out of Tavernier revolve around that reef and the surrounding backcountry waters.

State-park sites use a single centralized system. Reservations for John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park are made through the Florida State Parks reservation website or by calling 800-326-3521. Florida residents may reserve up to 11 months in advance, and non-residents up to 10 months in advance, with new inventory released daily at 8 a.m. Eastern time. Booking the first day sites open is the practical strategy for winter stays, since the campground has only around 47 sites and fills quickly. The maximum stay is 14 nights per site, and reservations made at the start of the window cannot be changed for 18 days. Private parks such as Blue Fin Rock Harbor RV Park and Marina, Sun Outdoors Key Largo, Sun Outdoors Islamorada, and Key Largo Campground and Marina book directly through their own websites, with waterfront sites often reserved many months out.
