Overview of camping near Welaka
Welaka sits on the west bank of the St. Johns River in Putnam County, roughly 25 minutes south of Palatka in northeast Florida. The town is a small river community surrounded by Welaka State Forest and within a short drive of Ocala National Forest, which puts RV travelers close to spring runs, fishing waters, and hiking trails without the crowds of larger Florida destinations.
RV options near town lean toward private waterfront parks. Welaka Lodge and Resort, Cherry Blossom RV Resort, Rivers Edge RV Park, and Port Cove RV Resort all provide hookup sites within a few minutes of the river, and Georgetown Marina, Lodge and RV Park sits directly across the water on the east bank near Little Lake George.
Public land camping is close by as well. Welaka State Forest offers primitive sites reachable by hike or boat, and Ocala National Forest campgrounds such as Salt Springs, Juniper Springs, and Alexander Springs are within roughly an hour, giving RV travelers a mix of full-service parks and forest-service options.
Things to do around Welaka
The St. Johns River is the main draw. Anglers target largemouth bass, bream, and catfish, and boat ramps and marinas make it easy to launch. Paddlers can explore the Ocklawaha River, Dunns Creek, and spring runs, though crossing the main St. Johns can be windy and wide.
On land, Welaka State Forest has marked hiking trails, a scenic drive, and Mud Spring, a clear spring run that empties into the river. The forest also includes an equestrian trail network with nearly 20 miles of horse trails, along with open pine savannas and river-swamp habitat.
Ocala National Forest, just west of the river, adds first-magnitude springs at Salt, Juniper, and Alexander for swimming, snorkeling, and paddling, plus off-road trails for ATVs and Jeeps.

Winter and early spring are the busiest RV months. From roughly November through April, daytime highs run comfortable, humidity is lower, and mosquitoes are more manageable, which draws snowbirds to private parks around Welaka. Sites at waterfront resorts often fill weeks or months ahead during this stretch, and monthly stays are common.
Summer is hot, humid, and wet. Afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily from June through August, driven by Atlantic moisture and the Bermuda High, and July and August are the wettest months of the year. Trails can be muddy, and biting insects are active. Summer also overlaps the primary hurricane and tropical storm season on the Florida peninsula, so RV travelers should monitor forecasts.
Fall shoulder season, roughly late September into November, tends to be drier and cooler. November is typically the driest month of the year, making it a strong window for hiking in Welaka State Forest and paddling the Ocklawaha.

How to book campgrounds near Welaka
Private RV parks around Welaka, including Welaka Lodge and Resort, Cherry Blossom RV Resort, Rivers Edge RV Park, Port Cove RV Resort, and Georgetown Marina, Lodge and RV Park, are booked directly through each property by phone or website. Winter and spring dates should be reserved well in advance, and many parks offer weekly and monthly rates alongside nightly stays.
Ocala National Forest campgrounds, including Salt Springs, Juniper Springs, and Alexander Springs, are reserved through Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777, up to six months in advance. Maximum stay is 14 nights in a 30-day period across all Ocala National Forest campgrounds. Welaka State Forest primitive campsites and the equestrian campground are booked through the Florida State Forests ReserveAmerica system, with a reservation window up to 11 months out.
What to expect on the ground
Welaka is a small, quiet river town with limited shopping and a handful of local restaurants, so RV travelers should stock up in Palatka or Crescent City before arrival. Cell coverage is generally usable but can drop inside the state forest.
Private parks near town typically offer 30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer, with river or canal access, docks, and pools at several properties. Sites are often shaded by live oaks, magnolias, and palms, which helps in summer heat but means checking clearance for taller rigs.
Wildlife is part of the experience. Alligators are present in the St. Johns and its tributaries, and black bears live in Ocala National Forest, so food and trash should be secured. Insect repellent is essential from spring through fall.

Yes. Every RV rental in Welaka booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built right into the reservation. The protection plan helps cover accidental damage to the vehicle, giving you peace of mind without arranging third-party insurance. During checkout you choose your coverage level (the guest selects the plan, not the host), so you can match the protection to your trip. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Welaka RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets one clear cancellation policy for every reservation (hosts do not), and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in plans confidently. After that window, your refund depends on how far out you cancel and the circumstances, including allowances for hurricanes and other natural disasters, which is reassuring in Florida from June through November. You won't navigate a patchwork of host-by-host rules, just one consistent RVezy process. If a tropical storm threatens your dates on the St. Johns River, contact RVezy support and they will walk you through your options.

Many RVezy hosts in Putnam County and the greater Palatka area will drive the RV directly to your campsite, vacation home, or a friend's driveway, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Popular delivery destinations include Welaka Lodge & Resort and campgrounds inside the Ocala National Forest. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts offering this service. Delivery fees usually run $2 to $4 per mile round-trip, ideal for a first time renting an RV without the learning curve.

The sweet spot for an RV rental in Welaka is mid-October through April, when daytime highs sit comfortably in the 65 to 80 degree Fahrenheit range, humidity drops, and mosquito activity eases. This is also prime bass-fishing season on the St. Johns River, so anglers should book early. Summer (June through September) brings 90-degree heat, afternoon thunderstorms, and hurricane season, but the river stays beautiful and rates drop significantly, great for a cheap RV rental Welaka deal. Winter overnight lows typically stay in the 40s, making it ideal for snowbirds. Bass tournaments in February or March are a fun time to feel the town buzz at its peak.
weather.gov/jax/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay in Welaka?
You will be in great shape. Welaka's quiet two-lane roads like US-17 and CR-309 are ideal for a first time renting an RV, with light traffic, flat terrain, and easy pull-throughs at most local campgrounds. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking through the generator, slide-outs, water systems, and dashboard controls. You can also message your host any time during the trip through the RVezy app. Nervous about driving a larger rig? Choose a Class B campervan rental Welaka style, they drive much like an oversized van. Do a slow loop through Welaka's residential streets before pointing toward I-95.
flhsmv.gov/safety-center/driving-safety/What happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. One phone call gets help dispatched, whether you are parked at Welaka Lodge, exploring Ocala National Forest backroads, or camping near Lake George. Your host is also a message away through the RVezy app and can usually troubleshoot small quirks like a tripped GFCI or a finicky propane switch in minutes. Snap photos of fluid levels and tire pressures during your walkthrough so you have a quick reference, then focus on landing that trophy bass.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are popular road trips from Welaka?

Favorites include St. Augustine (about 35 miles east) for the nation's oldest city and beachfront state parks, Daytona Beach (about 60 miles southeast) for drive-on sand and the Speedway, Silver Springs State Park (about 45 miles west) for glass-bottom boats, Crystal River (about 90 miles southwest) to swim with manatees, and the Florida Keys (a roughly 400-mile trip) for bucket-list island camping. Crossing into Georgia or beyond is welcome on most listings (Mexico travel is not permitted on RVezy rentals). Ask your host about their interstate policy when you message them before booking, most are flexible for multi-state Florida loops.
visitflorida.com/What should I budget for fuel on a Welaka RV trip?

Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches land around 7 to 10 MPG. For a typical 250-mile loop around the St. Johns River and Ocala National Forest, expect to spend $60 to $120 on fuel in a Class C. eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Welaka?
Reserve sooner rather than later, especially November through April when snowbirds fill riverfront spots. Florida State Park campgrounds like Salt Springs Recreation Area release reservations 11 months in advance through FloridaStateParks.org, and prime weekends can sell out within hours. Private parks like Welaka Lodge & Resort and Lake George Campground accept bookings 6 to 12 months out and tend to be slightly more flexible. For summer trips, 3 to 4 weeks of lead time usually does the job. If your dates are locked but the park is full, check back on Sunday evenings when no-shows often free up spots.
floridastateparks.org/learn/reserve-campsiteWhat are the local driving conditions like around Welaka?
Easy and scenic. Welaka's roads are flat, lightly trafficked, and surrounded by oak hammocks and river views, perfect terrain for a motorhome rental Welaka adventure. US-17 is the main artery (smooth, two lanes, 55 mph), and CR-309 hugs the St. Johns River with low-stress curves. Watch for occasional fog along the river at dawn, the rare alligator on rural roads, and afternoon summer thunderstorms that can pop up quickly between June and September. If lightning starts, pull off at a safe spot in nearby Palatka and wait it out, storms usually pass in 30 to 45 minutes. Avoid driving I-95 through Jacksonville during 7 to 9 AM and 4 to 6 PM rush hours.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Welaka%2C%20FloridaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Welaka through RVezy, payment is handled entirely on the platform with a major credit card, no cash, checks, or off-platform transfers (those aren't covered by RVezy's protections). A refundable security deposit, typically a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on the rig, is placed as a hold on your card before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape with fuel and tanks per the listing rules. Do a careful walkthrough video at both pickup and dropoff, time-stamped photos protect everyone and make deposit returns smooth.
