Campgrounds and RV parks near Williston, FL

The signature activity is snorkeling or scuba diving at Devil's Den, a privately owned prehistoric spring inside a limestone cave that holds a constant 72 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. Snorkeling is by reservation only, while certified open-water divers can show up during operating hours without a reservation. Goethe State Forest offers roughly 126 miles of marked multi-use trails accessed from several trailheads, open to hiking, biking, horseback riding, and carriage driving during daylight hours. Black Prong Equestrian Center connects directly to this trail system and hosts equestrian events and riders. At Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, families can climb the 50-foot observation tower, walk La Chua Trail for a chance to see bison and wild horses, or launch a kayak on Lake Wauberg.

Winter and early spring are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel here. Daytime highs typically sit in the mid 60s to low 70s Fahrenheit, humidity is lower than in summer, and mosquito pressure is minimal. Snowbird demand pushes bookings at Williston Crossings and Puc Buggy well ahead, so reserve early for January through March. Summer brings heat, daily thunderstorms, and thick humidity, along with the highest rainfall of the year. The 72-degree water at Devil's Den is a strong draw in July and August, but expect afternoon storms and book snorkeling slots early since they routinely sell out. Hurricane season runs June through November, with peak activity in August and September. Florida state forest and state park campgrounds may close whenever their county is placed under a tropical storm or hurricane warning, so watch the National Hurricane Center forecast and plan flexible arrival dates during late summer and early fall.

The land around Williston is flat to gently rolling, with sandy soils, pine flatwoods, and live oaks draped in Spanish moss. Roads to the private resorts and to Paynes Prairie are paved and easy for larger rigs, but the county roads leading to Goethe trailheads are rural, and the primitive sites themselves are sand or grass. Cell coverage is generally usable at Puc Buggy on major carriers but can be spotty deep inside Goethe State Forest. Wildlife is close at hand: alligators, gopher tortoises, bison, and wild horses at Paynes Prairie, plus red-cockaded woodpeckers and other pine flatwoods birds in Goethe. Pets are welcome at most private RV parks and at state park campsites on leash, but only service animals are allowed inside the Devil's Den spring area.
