Campgrounds and RV parks near Ball Ground, GA

The main draw is Amicalola Falls State Park, home to a 729-foot cascade and the approach trail that leads about eight miles to the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail at Springer Mountain. Visitors can climb the 604-step staircase alongside the falls, and the park adds a zip-line canopy tour, archery, and a network of shorter hikes suited to families. Lake Allatoona lies about 30 minutes south and is a straightforward choice for swimming, fishing, and boating during warm months. Downtown Ellijay, Blue Ridge, and Dahlonega are within an hour's drive and offer apple orchards, wineries, and the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. Closer to town, the Etowah River and small county parks give quick access to paddling, fishing, and shaded walking trails without a long drive from camp.

Spring and fall are the peak seasons. March through May brings wildflowers, running waterfalls, and the largest wave of Appalachian Trail thru-hikers passing through Amicalola Falls, so campground reservations at the state park fill early. October is prime for fall color across the ridges around Ellijay and Blue Ridge, and weekend sites at private RV resorts book out weeks in advance. Summer runs hot and humid, with regular afternoon thunderstorms. Higher-elevation campgrounds around Ellijay and Dawsonville stay a few degrees cooler than the Atlanta metro, and lakeside sites at Allatoona see heavy weekend demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Several U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds on the lake operate on a limited seasonal schedule, with parks such as Victoria Campground running roughly from early May through early October. Winters are short but variable, with mild stretches broken by cold snaps and occasional freezing rain. Amicalola Falls and larger private resorts such as Talona Ridge RV Resort stay open year-round, while many smaller and Corps-run parks close for the season.

Terrain in this part of Georgia is rolling to steep, with campground access roads that sometimes climb sharply. Ball Ground itself sits at roughly 1,100 feet, and parks farther north climb higher. The access road at Amicalola Falls is notably steep, so larger rigs are often better suited to purpose-built resorts with paved or graveled pads, such as Talona Ridge RV Resort. Most developed campgrounds have flush toilets, showers, and potable water. Cell service is generally solid near the highway corridors and thinner in valley campgrounds and inside the Chattahoochee National Forest. Black bears are present in the mountains, so food and trash must be stored securely. Georgia State Parks require a daily ParkPass for each vehicle, purchased at check-in or in advance. Firewood should be bought locally rather than transported in, to limit the spread of tree-killing pests.
