Camping near Chatsworth, Georgia
Chatsworth sits in Murray County at the base of Fort Mountain in the southwestern corner of the Cohutta Mountains, roughly an hour and a half north of Atlanta and about 30 minutes east of Dalton. The town serves as the main access point for Fort Mountain State Park and the Conasauga Ranger District of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, which together anchor most of the camping in the area.
RV renters typically choose between Georgia State Parks sites, Forest Service campgrounds inside the national forest, and privately run parks along the surrounding highways. Fort Mountain State Park has a 70-site campground near a 17-acre lake, offering tent, trailer, and RV sites with hookups, plus walk-in and platform sites, alongside a lakeside beach and paddle craft rentals.
Private options fill in the gaps for larger rigs and travelers who want full hookups and resort-style amenities. Talona Ridge RV Resort in nearby East Ellijay, Plum Nelly Campground, Whitewater RV Park, Adventures Unlimited, and GA RV Lot give renters a range of styles within a short drive of Chatsworth.
Things to do around Chatsworth
Fort Mountain State Park is the main draw. Hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders share trails that wind through hardwood forest and around a 17-acre lake, and the summit holds a Civilian Conservation Corps stone fire tower plus a mysterious 855-foot rock wall. In summer, families use the lakeside beach and rent paddle craft at the lake, and the park stables offer guided horseback rides.
North of town, the Cohutta Wilderness contains roughly 90 miles of hiking and backpacking trails, including routes along the Jacks and Conasauga Rivers. The Chief Vann House Historic Site preserves an early Cherokee brick residence, and the Cohutta-Chattahoochee Scenic Byway offers a mountain drive through the surrounding forest. Downtown Ellijay adds vineyards, orchards, and restaurants within about 30 minutes.

Spring and fall are the strongest seasons for RV travel in the area. Temperatures are mild, wildflowers and waterfalls peak in April, and fall foliage in the North Georgia mountains typically peaks from late September through October. Fall color weekends draw heavy demand, and most established campgrounds require reservations well in advance during that stretch.
Summer runs hot and humid at lower elevations, but Fort Mountain's higher elevation produces noticeably cooler nights, which makes tent and RV camping more comfortable than in the valley. The park's beach, lake, and shaded trails see peak family traffic June through August, and gnats and biting insects are common on wooded trails.
Winter is quieter. Fort Mountain State Park remains open year-round, and Cottonwood Patch Campground in the national forest also stays open through winter, but the Tearbritches, Chestnut Lead, Betty Gap, and Three Forks trailhead parking lots at the Cohutta Wilderness are closed from January 1 through early March due to annual winter gate closures.
How to book campgrounds near Chatsworth
Georgia State Parks sites, including Fort Mountain State Park, are reserved through the state parks reservation system or by calling 1-800-864-7275, with reservations opening up to 13 months in advance. A daily ParkPass is required for all vehicles and is not included in the reservation; overnight guests pay the ParkPass fee only once per stay. Peak weekends at Fort Mountain fill quickly, so early booking is recommended.
Campgrounds inside the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, including Cottonwood Patch and Lake Conasauga, use Recreation.gov or the phone line at 1-877-444-6777. Cottonwood Patch has moved to reservation-only, with a gate combination issued after booking.
Private parks such as Talona Ridge RV Resort book directly through their websites or partner platforms and often set minimum-stay requirements, especially on holiday weekends.
What RV renters should expect
Roads into the mountains twist and climb. Fort Mountain State Park sits east of Chatsworth on Highway 52, and campers regularly note tight interior campground roads, though larger fifth wheels and Class A rigs do fit. Cottonwood Patch has a 20-foot length restriction due to curves and bridges, so renters with longer coaches should stick to Fort Mountain or a private park.
Cell service is limited or absent at Fort Mountain and other higher-elevation sites, and campers often report driving down the mountain to pick up a signal. Black bears are active in the area, so food and scented items must be stored inside a vehicle or in bear-resistant containers. Hookup availability varies widely: expect 30- and 50-amp electric with water at most Fort Mountain sites, full hookups at Talona Ridge and similar private resorts, and no potable water at some Forest Service campgrounds.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Chatsworth, GA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Chatsworth, GA?
An RV rental in Chatsworth is one of the more affordable ways to explore North Georgia's mountains. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from roughly $175 to $275, and larger Class A coaches run between $250 and $400 nightly. Rates peak in October during leaf-peeping season along Highway 52 and dip in late winter and early spring. For a cheap RV rental in Chatsworth, search midweek dates, filter by smaller travel trailers, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Booking a delivered trailer to Fort Mountain State Park often costs less than driving a motorhome yourself once you factor in fuel.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Chatsworth,GeorgiaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Chatsworth, GA?
Good news for first-time renters: your regular Class C driver's license from any U.S. state is all you need to rent an RV in Chatsworth, GA. Georgia does not require a special endorsement or commercial license for non-commercial motorhomes, even larger Class A coaches. All RVezy guests must generally be 25 or older with a valid license, and ID verification is completed securely through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home country license along with an International Driving Permit. Most renters are surprised how easy it is to legally drive a 30-foot motorhome on Highway 411 right out of the gate.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Chatsworth includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive the winding roads up to Fort Mountain with confidence. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV and provides real financial peace of mind. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, so you stay in control of your coverage. If you get a flat tire on Highway 52 or run into a battery issue at Lake Conasauga, one call gets help dispatched. It's the kind of safety net that makes a first Chatsworth RV trip feel genuinely stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my plans change?
You can book your Chatsworth RV rental with confidence because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy. The policy factors in how far out you cancel relative to your trip start, and it accounts for qualifying events. Because every listing follows the same RVezy-managed framework, you'll never have to decode a different host's rules from one booking to the next. For the exact day-by-day breakdown, review the cancellation details on the RVezy Help Center before you book. It's designed so a North Georgia mountain getaway feels low-risk from the moment you reserve.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Chatsworth, GA?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Chatsworth is easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers whose owners welcome dogs (and sometimes cats), often for a small cleaning fee. Once you're here, your pup will love it: Fort Mountain State Park allows leashed dogs on its hiking trails, including the Gahuti Backcountry Trail and the Big Rock Nature Trail. Cohutta Wildlife Management Area trails are also dog-friendly, and downtown Chatsworth is welcoming to leashed pets. Pack a tick remover, since wooded North Georgia trails are prime tick country from April through October.
gastateparks.org/FortMountainCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Chatsworth?
Yes, RV delivery in Chatsworth is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a big rig up Highway 52's curves. Many local hosts will tow a travel trailer right to your site at Fort Mountain State Park, Doll Mountain Campground on Carters Lake, or a private property near the Cohutta Wilderness. They'll level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Filter by Delivery on the listing search to see which hosts offer it. Ask about delivery to Lake Conasauga only with smaller rigs, since the Forest Service road is gravel and steep.
gastateparks.org/FortMountainHow far can I drive, and what are the mileage policies?
You'll have plenty of room to roam on a Chatsworth RV trip. Many RVezy hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with additional miles available at a per-mile rate (commonly $0.30 to $0.50). Some hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a bigger Southeast loop. From Chatsworth, popular drives are short and scenic: Fort Mountain State Park (8 miles east), Carters Lake (20 miles south), Ellijay apple country (25 miles east), Chattanooga, TN (45 miles north), and the Ocoee River whitewater area (35 miles north). Message your host before booking if you're planning a longer Blue Ridge Parkway loop, and they'll often bundle extra miles into the nightly rate.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Chatsworth,GeorgiaWhere are the best campgrounds near Chatsworth, GA?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Chatsworth. The headliner is Fort Mountain State Park, with RV sites offering 30 and 50 amp electric, water, a bathhouse, and a 17-acre lake just 8 miles east of town. Doll Mountain Campground on Carters Lake offers peninsula lakefront sites with electric and water hookups. For a more rustic option, Lake Conasauga Campground atop Grassy Mountain is Georgia's highest lake. Hickey Gap in the Cohutta WMA is free and primitive. Fort Mountain books up months in advance for fall weekends, so reserve early through the Georgia State Parks system.
gastateparks.org/FortMountainWhen is the best time of year to take an RV trip to Chatsworth, GA?
Chatsworth is a four-season RV destination, but October is especially memorable. Fall foliage on Fort Mountain and along Highway 52 typically peaks mid-to-late October, with daytime highs in the 60s and crisp 40s at night. April and May bring blooming mountain laurel, dogwoods, and 70-degree days, perfect for hiking the Gahuti Trail. Summer (June through August) runs warm and humid with highs in the mid-80s, though elevations above 2,800 feet at Fort Mountain stay noticeably cooler than town. Winter is mild with highs around the low 50s and the occasional dusting of snow, which makes for quiet, scenic camping. Shoulder seasons mean lower rates and smaller crowds at the Cohutta Overlook.
weather.gov/ffc/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in the North Georgia mountains?
You'll do great, and you won't be doing it alone. If it's your first time renting an RV, every RVezy host in Chatsworth provides a full pickup orientation, walking you through driving tips, leveling, slide-outs, propane, and the dump valves. Many hosts also send video tutorials before pickup. Highway 411 through Chatsworth is wide and easy, and Highway 52 up to Fort Mountain is paved with manageable grades for a Class C motorhome or 25-foot travel trailer. Nervous about mountain curves? Choose a smaller campervan rental in Chatsworth, or book delivery and let the host handle the driving. You can message your host anytime during the trip with questions.
dot.ga.gov/DS/TravelWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Help is always one call away. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and mechanical breakdowns whether you're parked at Doll Mountain or boondocking near Lake Conasauga. Your host is also your first text-message lifeline: they know their rig best and can troubleshoot quirks quickly. RVezy's support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Cell service drops on top of Fort Mountain and throughout the Cohutta Wilderness, so screenshot your host's number and the roadside assistance number before leaving Chatsworth.

An RV road trip from Chatsworth puts some of the Southeast's best scenery within easy reach. Top routes include Chattanooga, TN (about 45 miles, 1 hour) for Rock City and the Tennessee Aquarium; Great Smoky Mountains National Park via Cherokee, NC (around 110 miles, 2.5 hours); the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville (about 160 miles, 3 hours); Helen, GA's Bavarian village and Anna Ruby Falls (around 60 miles, 1.5 hours); and Atlanta (about 95 miles, 2 hours). Cross-border travel into Tennessee and the Carolinas is allowed on RVezy rentals, while travel to Mexico is not permitted. Pair Chatsworth with two nights at Cades Cove in the Smokies for a classic mountain loop.
nps.gov/grsm/index.htmHow much will fuel cost on my Chatsworth RV trip?
Fuel tends to be one of the friendlier line items on a North Georgia RV trip. Georgia consistently has gas prices among the lowest in the country, and Chatsworth's stations on Highway 411 are typically cheaper than Atlanta. Expect Class C motorhomes to get 8 to 10 mpg, Class A coaches 6 to 8 mpg, and a truck towing a travel trailer 10 to 13 mpg. A typical 4-day loop covering 300 miles in a Class C runs roughly $100 to $150 in fuel at recent prices. Fuel up in town before heading up to Fort Mountain or the Cohutta Wilderness, where stations are scarce.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Chatsworth?
For the best campgrounds near Chatsworth, earlier is better, but you have options. Fort Mountain State Park accepts reservations up to 13 months in advance through the Georgia State Parks reservation system, and fall weekends (especially mid-October) routinely sell out months ahead. Doll Mountain and other Carters Lake campgrounds book on Recreation.gov up to 6 months in advance. Lake Conasauga and Hickey Gap are first-come, first-served, so plan to arrive Thursday for a weekend spot. Midweek stays in spring and summer are usually available 2 to 3 weeks out. Set a free reservation alert on Recreation.gov for cancellations, which pop up daily during peak season.
recreation.gov/What are driving conditions like around Chatsworth, GA?
Driving an RV around Chatsworth is refreshingly straightforward. Highway 411, the main north-south corridor through town, is a wide four-lane with easy RV access to gas, groceries, and Walmart. Highway 52 east to Fort Mountain climbs roughly 1,800 feet over about 8 miles with sweeping curves; downshift on the descent and most rigs under 35 feet handle it well. Avoid Forest Service roads to Lake Conasauga with larger RVs, as they're narrow gravel with limited turnarounds. Watch for afternoon thunderstorms June through August and the rare icy patch on the mountain in January. Black bears are active April to November, so drive cautiously at dawn and dusk near Cohutta.
dot.ga.gov/DS/TravelWhat amenities do campgrounds near Chatsworth offer?
Local campgrounds make RV life easy. Fort Mountain State Park's sites include 30 and 50 amp electric, water hookups, a dump station, hot showers, flush toilets, and a swim beach on the 17-acre lake. Doll Mountain at Carters Lake offers electric and water with a dump station on site. Lake Conasauga is primitive but scenic, ideal if you're self-contained with a generator. Need to fill fresh water or dump tanks between trips? The dump station at Fort Mountain is generally available for a small fee. Cell service is spotty above 2,500 feet, so download offline maps and stream what you need before heading up the mountain.
gastateparks.org/FortMountainWhat equipment and amenities come with a Chatsworth RV rental?
Your motorhome rental in Chatsworth comes ready for adventure. Expect a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunk beds (Class C and travel trailers typically sleep 4 to 8), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, plus an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet. Most rigs include roof air conditioning, a furnace, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger (required by Georgia law). Many RVezy hosts add TVs, outdoor speakers, generators for boondocking near Lake Conasauga, and even Starlink Wi-Fi. Linens, cookware, and camp chairs are commonly included or available as add-ons. Confirm generator hours and propane levels at pickup if you're heading somewhere without hookups.
dds.georgia.gov/safety/seat-belt-lawsWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Chatsworth offer a range of useful extras to customize your trip. Common add-ons include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, generators, bike racks, kayaks, fire pits, propane refills, and outdoor furniture. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Chatsworth, with a 30 to 60 minute orientation walkthrough. Delivery and setup to Fort Mountain State Park, Doll Mountain, or your private location is widely available, with fees based on round-trip distance. Mileage allowances vary by listing, so check the free-mile policy before booking. Bundling delivery, setup, and linens often costs less than buying them separately, so ask your host for a custom quote.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Chatsworth,GeorgiaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Booking is straightforward and secure. You pay through RVezy's platform with a credit or debit card, and no cash changes hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment and is released after the trip once the RV is returned clean, undamaged, and with the agreed fuel and tank levels. Choosing a higher protection plan tier at checkout can reduce your out-of-pocket exposure for damage. Take date-stamped photos and a quick video walkaround at both pickup and dropoff in the Chatsworth host's driveway, it's the easiest way to ensure your full deposit is returned.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Chatsworth in winter, and what should I know about cold weather?
Yes, winter RV camping in Chatsworth is a hidden gem. Fort Mountain State Park stays open year-round, and you'll often have the campground nearly to yourself, with daytime highs in the low 50s and overnight lows in the 20s to 30s. Many RVezy hosts in Georgia offer rigs equipped for cooler weather: enclosed and heated underbellies, propane furnaces, and electric space heaters for shore-power sites. Filter listings or message hosts directly to confirm cold-weather readiness before booking. Book a site with 50 amp service so you can run the furnace and a portable heater comfortably, and ask your host for a heated water hose if overnight temps dip below freezing.
