Campgrounds and RV parks near Metter, GA

Paddling is the signature activity. The mill pond at George L Smith State Park draws anglers and paddlers to thick stands of cypress and tupelo trees draped with Spanish moss, and rental kayaks and canoes are typically available on site. Two boat ramps are open to private boats, with a 10-horsepower limit on the lake. At Jack Hill State Park, guests fish, rent paddle boats and fishing boats, and use aquacycles on the small lake, while Brazell's Creek Golf Course, an 18-hole layout, sits on the property. Families also use the playground, miniature golf, and seasonal splash pad. Hiking is low-key rather than strenuous. George L Smith features about seven miles of trails through pine flatwoods, and the Ohoopee and Altamaha river corridors offer wildlife watching, birding, and fishing.

Camping runs year-round in this part of Georgia, but each season has trade-offs. Winter is mild and generally the driest stretch, with cool nights, making it a comfortable window for RVers escaping northern weather. Bugs are minimal and sites are easier to book, though occasional cold fronts bring frost. Spring brings warm days, blooming dogwoods and azaleas, and steady demand from Georgia families. Weekends at state parks fill early, especially around spring break and holiday weekends. Summer is hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms; alligators are regularly seen along the mill pond at George L Smith and the lake at Jack Hill, so campers should keep a safe distance from the water's edge. Fall is often the best season: lower humidity, fewer biting insects, and cooler evenings for campfires. Atlantic hurricane season peaks in September and can occasionally close parks or force evacuations across the coastal plain, so travelers should monitor forecasts. Ongoing park work also matters at George L Smith: new yurts are under construction in the campground loop, some RV campsites may be closed, and the Day Use Area is under construction.

State park campgrounds in this area are small and quiet. George L Smith has a compact main campground with RV, trailer, and tent sites, all with electric and water hookups, plus a handful of primitive walk-in sites, cottages, restrooms with showers, a laundry, and a trailer dump station. The posted RV length limit is 40 feet. Jack Hill is similarly compact, with tent, trailer, and RV sites, a bath house with laundry, a dump station, and cottages along the golf course. Reviewers note that site spacing can feel tight, though experiences vary by location within the loop. Expect sandy soil, pine shade, and warm-weather wildlife including alligators near ponds and rivers. Cell service is generally reliable near I-16 but can weaken in wooded park interiors.
