Campgrounds near Nelson, Georgia
Nelson sits in Pickens County at the southern edge of the North Georgia mountains, roughly an hour north of Atlanta via GA-515. The town works well as a base for RV travelers because it puts several distinct camping styles within a short drive: a busy state park with waterfall access, family-run lakeside campgrounds, and full-service RV resorts.
Amicalola Falls State Park, about a half hour northwest, is best known for the 729-foot waterfall (the tallest in Georgia) and a 7.5-mile approach trail to the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail at Springer Mountain. Closer to Ellijay, Diamond Lure Campground and RV Resort has been family owned and operated since 1973 and centers on a 15-acre spring-fed lake stocked with bass, catfish, and bream. Twin Lakes RV Park and Plum Nelly Campground round out mid-range options in the same corridor.
For travelers who want resort amenities, Talona Ridge RV Resort in East Ellijay features level concrete pads designed for big-rig motor coaches, a heated pool and hot tub, pickleball courts, a dog park, and Grandview Hall as the social centerpiece.
Things to do near Nelson
The main draw is hiking. Amicalola Falls anchors the area, and the park connects to the Appalachian Trail approach, making it a common launch point for through-hikers and day trippers alike. Shorter loops climb to overlooks above the falls and into surrounding ridges.
On the water, Diamond Lure sits around a 15-acre spring-fed lake stocked for catch-and-release fishing, and guests can launch their own kayaks, canoes, or paddleboards, though motorized watercraft are not permitted. Tubing and kayaking on the Cartecay River are popular in warmer months.
Ellijay, roughly 25 minutes north, is the apple capital of Georgia, with orchards, cideries, and a walkable town square. Wineries around Dahlonega and Blue Ridge are an easy day trip, and Dawsonville offers outlet shopping and the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame.

Spring is the busiest stretch for the state park. March and April are the busiest camping months at Amicalola Falls as many hikers arrive to embark on the Appalachian Trail, so making camping reservations well in advance is important. Wildflowers and waterfall flow peak during this period, and daytime temperatures are comfortable for hiking.
Summer brings warm, humid days and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, but tree cover keeps most campgrounds shaded. Fall is the other peak: for weekends, holidays, and the fall foliage season from late September through November, booking as soon as dates open up is highly recommended. Color typically peaks in mid to late October across the higher ridges.
Winter is the quietest season. Most private RV parks stay open year-round, and camp hosts remain on site even during winter months at Amicalola Falls. Occasional snow or ice is possible on mountain roads, so travelers should watch forecasts before driving in with a rig.

Camper was great and so was communication with owner. Would gladly use them again.

The hosts for this camper were amazing. Both husband and wife came down do an intro and walkthrough of the camper. Everything you could possibly imagine needing for a week at a campsite was included, they truly thought if everything. The camper was immaculately cared for and very well optioned. Massive awning, great kitchen, double bathrooms and the AC was great. It was 95 for our entire stay and the camper stayed cool every day. The hosts were very gracious, while we didn’t need anything during our trip, I’m confident that if we had called they would have been right there to help. Highly recommend using axel and anchor - they turned our rental into an entire experience….we had a great time.

How to book near Nelson
State park sites at Amicalola Falls are handled through the Georgia State Parks reservation system. Reservations can be made up to 13 months in advance, and Georgia residents may book up to 14 months in advance. The park is managed by the North Georgia Mountains Authority and Coral Hospitality, and Amicalola Falls State Park and Lodge also takes reservations by phone.
Private campgrounds such as Diamond Lure Campground and RV Resort, Twin Lakes RV Park, Plum Nelly Campground, and Talona Ridge RV Resort each take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For peak spring and fall weekends, booking two to three months out is a safer target, and popular pull-through and full-hookup sites go first.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into the mountains twist and climb. Approaches to campgrounds off Route 52 involve continuous curves and grade changes, so drivers in motorhomes or towing should plan for a slow, deliberate drive. At Amicalola Falls, all campers check in at the lodge regardless of whether they reserved online, and the climb from the lodge to the campground is notably steep.
Site surfaces vary. Amicalola Falls can accommodate RVs up to 70 feet, with full hookups available, and sites 22 and 23 are noted as particularly easy for backing in larger rigs. Talona Ridge sites are level concrete pads with picnic tables and fire pits with plenty of space between sites.
Cell coverage is generally usable near Ellijay and Dawsonville but drops in the deeper hollows.
