Camping near New England, Georgia
New England is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Dade County, in the U.S. state of Georgia, tucked into the northwestern corner of the state near the Alabama and Tennessee borders. The area sits within the Chattanooga metropolitan area, with downtown Chattanooga roughly 15 minutes north via Interstate 59. Lookout Mountain rises to the east, and the limestone geology of northwest Georgia has resulted in the formation of 164 caves in Dade County alone.
RV renters use New England as a low-traffic base for exploring Cloudland Canyon State Park, Lookout Mountain attractions, and the Tennessee River Gorge. Cloudland Canyon straddles a deep gorge cut into the mountain by Sitton Gulch Creek, and elevation differs from 800 to 1,980 feet.
Campground options within a short drive include Lookout Mountain / Chattanooga West KOA Holiday just off I-59 exit 17, the West Rim and East Rim campgrounds inside Cloudland Canyon State Park, Raccoon Mountain Caverns & Campground west of Chattanooga, and Hales Bar Marina and Resort on Nickajack Lake. Together they cover full-hookup RV resorts, state park sites with water and electric, and waterfront marina camping.
Things to do near New England
Cloudland Canyon anchors the outdoor lineup. Trails range from family-friendly rim walks to a strenuous waterfall descent, and mountain biking is available at the newly developed Five Points Recreation Area and along the Cloudland Connector Trail, and the park also offers disc golf, a fishing pond, trails for horseback riding, picnicking and overlooks. The West Rim Loop Trail starts inside the West Rim Campground.
Raccoon Mountain Caverns & Campground provides on-site guided cave tours through more than five miles of underground passageways, plus a swimming pool, dog park, gem panning, and hiking trails. Wild cave expeditions venture into undeveloped sections for a muddier experience.
Off-property, families head to Rock City, Ruby Falls, the Incline Railway, and the Tennessee Aquarium in downtown Chattanooga. Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, the nation's first military park, sits within easy driving distance for Civil War history.

The area has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers, cool winters, and precipitation spread fairly evenly through the year. Winter is typically the wettest season, and occasional snowfall occurs during the colder months. Elevation on the Lookout Mountain plateau can mean cooler temperatures and more fog than the valley floor.
Spring brings waterfalls at full flow inside Cloudland Canyon and moderate temperatures ideal for hiking, though rainfall stays high through March and April. Summer is peak family season: sites at Cloudland Canyon book well ahead, and Raccoon Mountain's pool and cave tours draw steady traffic. July averages daily highs near 90 degrees Fahrenheit with high humidity.
Fall is a strong shoulder season, with cooler nights, lower rainfall through September and October, and hardwood color across the plateau. Winter camping stays viable at private full-hookup parks like the KOA and Raccoon Mountain, which operate year-round; state park sites remain open, but colder nights on the rim can drop into the 20s Fahrenheit.
How to book
Cloudland Canyon's West Rim and East Rim campgrounds are reserved through the Georgia State Parks system. Reservations for all campsites are open year-round and can be made up to 13 months in advance, with Georgia residents able to book accommodations 14 months in advance. A ParkPass is required for all vehicles and is not included in reservations fees.
Lookout Mountain / Chattanooga West KOA Holiday books through the KOA site or by phone, with a 14-day cancellation notice for RV and tent sites and 21 days for cabins. Raccoon Mountain Caverns & Campground and Hales Bar Marina and Resort both accept direct online or phone reservations through their own operator websites.
For summer weekends and fall color, lock in state park sites several months out and private parks at least a few weeks ahead.
What to expect on site
State park sites at Cloudland Canyon have water and electric hookups; a dump station is available on the property. Modern bathhouses include hot showers, and both campgrounds have playgrounds. Sites at the East Rim sit closer to the day-use area and main road and can be noisier than the more wooded West Rim.
Lookout Mountain / Chattanooga West KOA sits on 37 acres of native Appalachian forest, with most sites shaded under a canopy of native hardwoods and evergreens, a large 56,000-gallon salt water free form pool, dog park, and RV sites that accommodate vehicles up to 70 feet long. Raccoon Mountain Caverns & Campground offers pull-through full-hookup sites with 30/50-amp service, a saltwater pool, laundry, camp store, and on-site cave access.
Hales Bar Marina and Resort provides paved full-hookup RV sites on Nickajack Lake, a seasonal pool, and marina services including boat rentals.
