Camping near Resaca, Georgia
Resaca sits in Gordon County in northwest Georgia, along Interstate 75 between Atlanta and Chattanooga, at the foothills of the southern Blue Ridge Mountains. The area works well as an RV base because it puts campers within a short drive of Carters Lake, the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, and the Resaca Battlefield Historic Site, while keeping interstate access and grocery stops in nearby Calhoun and Adairsville close at hand.
Campground options within roughly a half-hour drive range from full-hookup RV parks to county-run lakeside sites. Talona Ridge RV Resort caters to bigger rigs looking for resort-style amenities, while Round Pond Retreat and Plum Nelly Campground offer smaller, quieter settings. Water-focused campers often head for Bartow Gatewood Park, also known as Bartow Beach Campground, on Lake Allatoona, or Euharlee Creek Campground at Frankie Harris Park just south in Bartow County.
Elevations in the surrounding hills run from roughly 650 to 1,800 feet, which produces noticeable temperature and rainfall variation across short distances. That elevation range matters when choosing between a lakeside site and a ridge-top park in the warmer months.
Things to do near Resaca
History is the anchor. The Resaca Battlefield Historic Site is a 483-acre Heritage Preserve with more than four miles of walking trails, interpretive signage, and a picnic pavilion, marking ground fought over at the opening of Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. Admission is free, and the site is open Friday through Sunday on seasonal hours: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. from April through October and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from November through March. The Resaca Confederate Cemetery and New Echota Historic Site in nearby Calhoun round out a day of Civil War and Cherokee history.
Outdoors, Carters Lake offers boating, fishing, and trails such as the 3.5-mile Amadahy loop at Woodring Branch. Fort Mountain State Park to the east has hiking, a small lake, and mountain-view campsites. Families staying near Lake Allatoona have easy access to fishing, paddling, and swimming from Bartow Gatewood Park.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV camping in the Resaca area. Highs sit in the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit through much of March, April, October, and November, and September is typically the driest month of the year in nearby Calhoun. Fall foliage in the surrounding mountains generally peaks from mid-October into early November.
Summers are hot and humid. Daytime highs regularly reach the upper 80s and low 90s, with July averaging around 90 degrees, and afternoon thunderstorms are common from June through August. Ridge-top and lakeside campgrounds tend to run a few degrees cooler than the valley. Summer is also peak reservation season on Carters Lake and at Georgia State Parks, so booking well ahead is important.
Winters are short and mild by North American standards, but wet. January averages the coldest temperatures, with average highs near 50 and lows around freezing, and December is typically the wettest month. Bartow Gatewood Park operates seasonally from March 1 through October 31, so it is not an option for winter stays.
How to book campgrounds near Resaca
Georgia State Parks in the region, such as Fort Mountain, take reservations up to 13 months in advance for non-residents and 14 months in advance for Georgia residents. A 50 percent deposit is required to confirm a reservation booked 15 or more days out, and reservations made 14 days or fewer before arrival require full payment at booking. A daily or annual ParkPass is required for parking.
Carters Lake campgrounds, including Woodring Branch, are managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and reserved through Recreation.gov, typically several months ahead; check individual facility pages for the exact booking window. Private parks such as Talona Ridge RV Resort, Round Pond Retreat, and Plum Nelly Campground book direct through their own websites. County-run sites like Euharlee Creek Campground at Frankie Harris Park and Bartow Gatewood Park use municipal or county reservation systems.
What to expect on the ground
Access to most campgrounds near Resaca is straightforward off I-75, U.S. 41, or Georgia state routes, though mountain-adjacent parks can involve steep grades and switchbacks that require careful driving in larger rigs. Confirm site length and hookup type at booking, since a mix of back-in and pull-through sites is common and full hookups are not universal. At Bartow Gatewood Park, for example, sites are power and water only, with lengths ranging from 20 to 40 feet.
Cell service can be spotty at lakeside and forested sites, especially around Carters Lake and Fort Mountain. Copperheads are present on the Resaca Battlefield trails and in surrounding woods, so stay on marked paths and keep food secured. Georgia State Parks limit stays to 14 consecutive nights, after which campers must vacate the park for at least three nights before returning. Carters Lake sites are capped at 14 days within any 30-day period.

Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl, North Georgia summers stay warm into October, and bring vaccination records in case your campground asks at check-in.
gastateparks.org/PetPolicyCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Resaca?
Yes, and it is a game-changer for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Resaca, meaning they will tow the rig to your campsite at places like Salacoa Creek Park, Carters Lake, or even a private property, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. You skip the towing stress and start your vacation the moment you arrive. Delivery fees usually run $2 to $4 per mile round-trip, and some hosts include a set radius for free. gastateparks.org/When is the best time of year for an RV trip in Resaca?
Resaca shines from April through early November, with two standout windows. April and May bring wildflowers, dogwoods, and comfortable highs in the 70s, perfect for hiking the Resaca Battlefield trails. Mid-September through early November delivers crisp 60 to 75°F days and spectacular fall foliage across the Cohutta Mountains. July and August are hot and humid with highs near 90°F and heat indices over 100°F, so a rig with strong air conditioning is a must. Winter is mild but can dip below freezing in January, with occasional light snow. Pro tip: book the second weekend in October for peak color at Fort Mountain, it's the sweet spot for RV camping in Resaca.
weather.gov/ffc/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Resaca?
Totally, this is a great area for first time renting an RV. Resaca sits along straight, well-maintained I-75 with wide lanes and easy on/off ramps, and the surrounding two-lane roads through Gordon and Murray counties are gentle and rural. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, and dumping tanks, plus they're a text away during your trip. Most travel trailers and Class C motorhomes drive much like a large truck. Pro tip: if you're nervous, start with a Class B campervan rental in Resaca, they handle just like a big van and fit in any parking lot, including downtown Calhoun's.
dot.ga.gov/DriveSmartWhat if something breaks down during my trip?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. From Resaca, help can typically reach you anywhere along I-75, US-41, or the back roads near Carters Lake within an hour. If something mechanical comes up, message your host directly through the RVezy app, many issues are simple fixes they can walk you through. RVezy support is also available around the clock. Pro tip: snap a quick video of the RV exterior and major systems at pickup, it is a smart habit that makes any post-trip conversation effortless.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Resaca RV rental across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
Yes to multi-state road trips, that is one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Resaca. You are free to cross into Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, and beyond on most RVezy rentals, and popular routes include the Great Smokies loop and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and proper paperwork, just message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: if you are driving north toward Kentucky bourbon country, fuel up in Tennessee where gas is often cheaper per gallon than in Georgia.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for in North Georgia?
Plan smart and fuel costs stay very manageable. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 10 miles per gallon (mpg), Class A coaches get 6 to 8 mpg, travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg), and Class B campervans are the champs at 16 to 20 mpg. Gas prices in Gordon County typically run a few cents below the Georgia state average, with stations clustered around Resaca's I-75 exit 320 and nearby Calhoun. For a 300-mile round trip from Resaca to the Smokies and back in a Class C, budget about $130 to $160 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Calhoun before heading into the Cohutta Wilderness, stations get sparse past Chatsworth.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Resaca?
Earlier is better, especially for state parks. Georgia State Parks like Fort Mountain and James H. (Sloppy) Floyd open reservations 13 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and prime fall weekends in October fill within hours. US Army Corps of Engineers sites at Carters Lake book through Recreation.gov up to 6 months out. Private parks like Salacoa Creek and KOA Calhoun are usually bookable 3 to 6 months ahead and have more flexibility. For a summer or fall Resaca RV trip, lock in your campground first, then book your RVezy rental to match. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have openings, even last-minute.
recreation.gov/What are local driving conditions like around Resaca?
Driving in and around Resaca is genuinely easy. I-75 is flat, straight, and 6 lanes wide through Gordon County, with low traffic compared to Atlanta. State routes like GA-136 and US-411 are scenic two-lanes with mild grades. The one area to plan for is the climb up to Fort Mountain on GA-52, which has 7 percent grades and tight switchbacks, take it slow in a larger motorhome and use lower gears descending. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can pop up quickly from June through August. Pro tip: avoid I-75 southbound on Sunday afternoons between 3 and 7 pm when Atlanta-bound weekend traffic clogs up around Cartersville.
511ga.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Resaca?
You'll find a great mix of options. Most private parks and US Army Corps sites at Carters Lake offer full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and dump stations. Georgia State Parks like Fort Mountain typically provide water and electric at the site with a centralized dump station and bathhouse. National Forest campgrounds in the Cohutta Wilderness are more primitive (vault toilets, no hookups), perfect for self-contained rigs. To refill fresh water or dump tanks mid-trip, the Pilot Travel Center at exit 320 in Resaca has a dump station, and Calhoun's Walmart often allows brief overnight parking. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-safe water hose and a 30-to-50 amp adapter, just in case.
fs.usda.gov/confWhat's typically included inside an RVezy rental in Resaca?
Pretty much everything you need to live comfortably on the road. A typical motorhome rental in Resaca comes with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, sleeping for 4 to 8 people, air conditioning, a furnace, a water heater, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and onboard generator for boondocking. Wi-Fi is sometimes offered as an add-on, but cell signal is generally strong on Verizon and AT&T throughout Gordon County. Linens, kitchen kits, and camping chairs are often available, just check the listing. Pro tip: message the host before booking if you need a specific feature like a king bed or bunkhouse for the kids.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/393.93What add-ons and pickup options are common for Resaca RV rentals?
Hosts in Resaca offer lots of ways to customize your trip. Popular add-ons include linens and bedding ($30 to $60), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), camping chairs and tables ($15 to $25), bikes, kayaks, generators, and propane refills. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Resaca, Calhoun, or nearby Dalton, with delivery available for an extra fee. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per day, with overage charged at $0.30 to $0.50 per mile, and a handful of hosts offer unlimited mileage for longer trips. Pro tip: bundle linens, a kitchen kit, and a generator on your first trip, it turns a bare rig into a turnkey vacation and you'll know what to bring next time.
consumer.ga.gov/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Simple and secure. You will pay for your Resaca RV rental directly through the RVezy platform using a credit or debit card, never in cash to the host. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is placed as a hold on your card a few days before pickup and released after the trip, usually within 7 days, assuming the rig is returned in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues, do a thorough walkthrough at pickup with the host and take time-stamped photos and videos. Pro tip: bring the RV back with the fuel and propane levels noted in your agreement, and dump the tanks if required, that is the easiest way to get your full deposit back fast.
