Camping near St. Simons Island
St. Simons Island sits on Georgia's Atlantic coast in the Golden Isles, connected to Brunswick by a causeway. The island itself does not host a public campground, so RV travelers base themselves on neighboring Jekyll Island or in the Brunswick area and drive over the bridge for beach days, historic sites, and the Pier Village.
The closest option is Jekyll Island Campground on the north end of Jekyll Island, roughly a 25-minute drive from St. Simons. Mainland RV parks near I-95 and US-17, including Southern Retreat RV Park, Coastal GA RV Resort, Inland Harbor RV Park, and Legacy RV Resort, put travelers within a short drive of both islands.
St. Simons is a compact barrier island with paved bike paths, tidal beaches, and a walkable village core. Fort Frederica National Monument, the St. Simons Lighthouse, and East Beach are the anchor stops. Neighboring Jekyll Island, Sea Island, and Little St. Simons round out a multi-day itinerary.
Things to do around St. Simons Island
Climb the 1872 St. Simons Lighthouse for panoramic views of the sound, then walk the adjacent Pier Village and Neptune Park. Fort Frederica National Monument preserves the tabby ruins of James Oglethorpe's 1736 military settlement and the nearby Bloody Marsh battle site, both administered by the National Park Service.
East Beach is the main swimming beach, with wide sandbars at low tide, restrooms, and public parking. The island has miles of paved bike paths connecting the village, beaches, and historic sites, and rentals are easy to find.
A short drive to Jekyll Island adds Driftwood Beach, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, and Summer Waves Water Park. Kayak tours of the salt marsh, inshore fishing charters, and dolphin-watching cruises operate from marinas on both islands.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots for camping in the Golden Isles. Daytime highs sit in the 70s and low 80s, humidity is manageable, and rainfall stays moderate. March and April fill quickly with spring-break traffic, and May marks the start of sea turtle nesting season on the beaches.
Summer runs hot and humid, with average highs in the upper 80s to low 90s and thunderstorms most afternoons. August is the wettest month, and Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, peaking in September. RV travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories in late summer and early fall.
Winter is mild by North American standards. Daytime temperatures typically reach the 60s, overnight lows dip into the 40s, and hard freezes are rare. Snowbird RVers use the region as a stopover between the Northeast and Florida, so Jekyll Island Campground sees steady bookings from December through February.

How to book
Jekyll Island Campground is operated by the Jekyll Island Authority and accepts reservations up to 13 months (369 days) in advance, online or by phone at 912-635-3021. Maximum stay is 14 nights, weekend stays require a two-night minimum, and Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends carry a three-night minimum. Cancellations and early departures are subject to a fee.
Private parks in the area, including Southern Retreat RV Park, Coastal GA RV Resort, Inland Harbor RV Park, and Legacy RV Resort, handle bookings directly through their own websites or by phone. Availability tightens for holiday weekends, spring break, and the winter snowbird stretch, so booking several months ahead is recommended.
A separate daily parking fee applies at the Jekyll Island entrance gate for every vehicle driven onto the island, in addition to the campsite charge.
What to expect on the ground
Jekyll Island Campground offers 18 wooded acres under a maritime forest canopy of live oaks draped in Spanish moss, with 179 sites split between full hook-up RV sites and primitive tent sites. Full hook-ups include electric, water, sewer, and cable TV, with free Wi-Fi for registered guests. The maximum RV length is 45 feet, subject to specific site limits, and sites are described as fairly level. Amenities include two bathhouses, laundry, a general store, a community event pavilion, and bike rentals.
The campground is about a half-mile from Driftwood Beach and Clam Creek Picnic Area, with the fishing pier nearby. It is pet-friendly with designated walking areas. Street-legal golf carts are permitted on Jekyll Island roads, but ATVs and side-by-sides are not.
Mainland parks near Brunswick tend to be more open and sunnier, trading tree cover for easier maneuvering and pull-through access.

Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in St. Simons Island, with no CDL or special endorsement required for any motorhome or travel trailer on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older and upload a valid license through the RVezy platform, which handles ID verification securely before pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Most first-timers are surprised how straightforward the process is, so you can focus on planning your beach days at East Beach instead of paperwork.

Every RV rental in St. Simons Island booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built into your reservation, so you can cross the F.J. Torras Causeway with confidence. During checkout you choose your protection level, which covers physical damage to the RV and provides liability coverage for added peace of mind. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my St. Simons Island RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy that applies to your reservation, and the specific terms are shown clearly during checkout before you confirm. The exact refund amount depends on how far in advance you cancel and the policy tier on your booking, all detailed in the RVezy Help Center. If a hurricane warning or other major event impacts the Georgia coast, RVezy reviews trip-impacting situations on a case-by-case basis. Pro tip: book early to secure the best Jekyll Island and Crooked River sites for your St. Simons Island RV trip, knowing the cancellation terms are transparent from day one.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a St. Simons Island RV trip?
Absolutely, and St. Simons is one of the most dog-friendly beach towns on the East Coast, which makes a pet-friendly RV rental in St. Simons Island a fantastic choice. Just use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to find hosts who welcome four-legged travelers, then check the listing for any pet fee or breed notes. Once you arrive, dogs are allowed off-leash on the beach during specific hours (typically before 9 AM and after 6 PM in summer), and Jekyll Island Campground has a dedicated bark park. Massengale Park and Gascoigne Bluff also have shaded oak trails perfect for an after-dinner walk with your pup.
glynncounty.org/1136/Beach-RulesCan the RV be delivered to my campground or rental house?
Yes, RV delivery in St. Simons Island is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're flying into Jacksonville or Brunswick Golden Isles airports. Many RVezy hosts will drive the RV to Jekyll Island Campground, Coastal Georgia RV Resort in Brunswick, or even a private driveway on the island, then handle the full setup including hookups, slide-outs, and an orientation walkthrough. Use the Delivery filter when searching, and you'll see each host's delivery radius and flat fee, which typically ranges from $2 to $5 per mile. It's the stress-free way to enjoy a motorhome rental St. Simons Island without ever getting behind the wheel of a big rig.
jekyllisland.com/activities/camping/How far can I travel on an RV trip from St. Simons Island?
You can easily reach Savannah's Historic District in about 90 minutes (75 miles north on I-95), Amelia Island, Florida in just over an hour (45 miles south), and Charleston, South Carolina in roughly 3.5 hours (180 miles). Hosts set their own mileage policies, with many including 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage. Message the host directly from the listing to confirm what fits your route best.
fhwa.dot.gov/byways/byways/2071Where are the best campgrounds near St. Simons Island?

gastateparks.org/CrookedRiverWhen is the best time of year to visit St. Simons Island in an RV?
St. Simons shines almost year-round thanks to its mild coastal climate, but the sweet spot for RV camping in St. Simons Island is March through May and again from late September through November. Spring temperatures sit in the 70s and low 80s with low humidity and blooming azaleas, while fall brings warm beach days, fewer crowds, and softer rental rates. Summer (June to August) is hot and humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s and afternoon thunderstorms, but campgrounds book solid for family beach trips. Winter is genuinely mild with daytime highs in the 60s, making it a smart-money season for snowbirds and golfers.
weather.gov/jax/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
First time renting an RV? You're in great hands on St. Simons because the island is flat, the speed limits are low, and the F.J. Torras Causeway is a straight 4-mile shot from the mainland with no steep grades. Every RVezy host provides a full orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, hookups, and dump procedures before you drive off. You can also message hosts before booking with any questions, and many have video walkthroughs ready to send. If you're still nervous, choose a Class B campervan or a delivered travel trailer and skip the highway driving entirely. Most renters say the first 30 minutes feels like a lot, then it clicks.
dds.georgia.gov/safe-driving-tipsWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on the Sidney Lanier Bridge or a dead battery at Massengale Park is one phone call away from help. Your host is typically your first point of contact for quick questions like how to reset the inverter or restart the water pump, and most respond within minutes. For larger issues, RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Keep both numbers saved in your phone and you can relax knowing your Golden Isles getaway is fully supported.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat kind of fuel mileage should I plan for, and what does gas cost in Georgia?
Plan smart and your fuel budget stays manageable. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A coaches 6 to 9 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 9 to 13 MPG combined). Georgia consistently has some of the lowest gas prices in the Southeast, often 20 to 40 cents below the national average, and Brunswick has several large-format truck stops just off I-95 at Exit 36 that easily accommodate big rigs. For a 5-day RV rental in Georgia covering 300 miles, budget roughly $120 to $200 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up on the mainland before crossing the causeway, since island prices run higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near St. Simons Island?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the best sites. Jekyll Island Campground accepts reservations up to 13 months in advance and weekends from March through May fill 6 to 9 months out, especially around the Georgia-Florida game and spring break. Georgia State Parks like Crooked River use ReserveAmerica and open a 13-month booking window as well. Private parks such as Coastal Georgia RV Resort and Blythe Island Regional Park can often be booked 1 to 3 months ahead for weekdays. Pro tip: if you're locked out of weekends, try Sunday-through-Thursday stays. You'll find better availability, lower rates, and quieter beaches.
gastateparks.org/ReservationsWhat are driving conditions like on and around St. Simons Island?
Driving an RV in St. Simons Island is refreshingly easy compared to most beach destinations. The F.J. Torras Causeway from Brunswick is wide and flat with a 45 MPH limit, and the island's main roads (Frederica, Demere, and Ocean Boulevard) are tree-lined but RV-friendly. Watch for low-hanging live oak branches on older village streets near Mallery Street, and stick to designated routes for rigs over 11 feet tall. I-95 is the main north-south artery and stays busy on summer Fridays and Sunday afternoons. Afternoon thunderstorms in summer can pop up fast, so check radar before heading out and pull over if visibility drops.
511ga.org/What hookups and amenities should I expect at local campgrounds?
Coastal Georgia campgrounds are well-equipped for any rig. Jekyll Island Campground, Coastal Georgia RV Resort, and Inland Harbor RV Park all offer full hookups including 30/50-amp electric, fresh water, and sewer at most sites, plus free WiFi and laundry facilities. Dump stations are available on-site at every major park near St. Simons, and potable water fills are easy to find at Blythe Island Regional Park if you're boondocking nearby. Bathhouses are typically clean and air-conditioned. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot sewer hose and a water pressure regulator, since some older Brunswick-area parks have variable water pressure that can stress your RV's plumbing.
epd.georgia.gov/watershed-protection-branchWhat's inside a typical RVezy rental in St. Simons Island?
You'll feel right at home. Most RVs on the platform come stocked with a queen or king bed, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a bathroom with shower, dinette, climate control, and seatbelted seating for everyone in your group. Many also include outdoor awnings, beach chairs, generators for boondocking, and Bluetooth sound systems perfect for Golden Isles sunset evenings. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes often add a second TV, washer/dryer combos, and rooftop solar. WiFi varies by host, but cell signal across Glynn County is strong, so a personal hotspot works well. Check each listing's amenity list to match your must-haves before booking.
fcc.gov/BroadbandDataWhat add-ons and pickup options do hosts typically offer?
Hosts on RVezy make customizing your trip simple. Common add-ons include linen and towel packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, generators, bikes, paddleboards, beach gear, and pet packages, all visible right on the listing page. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Brunswick, St. Simons, or Jekyll, and many offer delivery to your campground or vacation rental for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary, but expect 100 to 150 free miles per night with overage at $0.30 to $0.45 per mile, and some hosts offer unlimited mileage packages for road trips. Pro tip: bundle delivery, generator, and linens at booking. It's often cheaper than adding them later.
gohs.georgia.gov/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps your money protected from booking to checkout. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before pickup and released after trip completion, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid surprises, take date-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's fuel and dump-tank instructions, and stay within your mileage allowance. Easy steps, and your Georgia coast adventure stays stress-free from first click to final wave goodbye.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take the RV across state lines or into Florida?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome and one of the best parts of an RV road trip from St. Simons Island. Florida is just 60 miles south on I-95, putting Amelia Island, Jacksonville, and St. Augustine all within easy reach, and South Carolina's Charleston and Hilton Head are a comfortable day's drive north. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection coverage does not extend there, but US road trips are fully covered. Confirm your planned route with the host when you book so they are aware. Pro tip: a 7-day loop hitting Savannah, Charleston, and Hilton Head makes a perfect coastal RV trip from St. Simons Island.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityAny local insider tips for first-time visitors to St. Simons Island?
Here's what locals know: the best free spot on the island is the Avenue of the Oaks at Gascoigne Bluff, a stunning canopy of 18th-century live oaks that's perfect for sunset photos and just minutes from the village. Grab fresh shrimp tacos at Southern Soul BBQ (yes, a BBQ joint with incredible seafood), then bike the 4-mile beachfront path along Ocean Boulevard. Time your visit around low tide and you can walk all the way out to the East Beach sandbars. For a family RV trip in St. Simons Island, don't miss the Neptune Park Fun Zone with mini-golf and a free pool right next to the historic lighthouse. You'll leave already planning your next visit.
