Camping near Varnell, Georgia
Varnell sits in Whitfield County in the northwest corner of Georgia, a short drive north of Dalton and roughly 20 to 30 minutes south of Chattanooga, Tennessee. The area functions as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the southern Appalachians, the Chickamauga Lake shoreline, and the Cohutta and Cherokee national forests. Interstate 75 runs just east of town, which makes campground access straightforward for travelers coming from Atlanta or Knoxville.
Most nearby campgrounds cluster along the I-75 corridor between Dalton and Cleveland, Tennessee. Chattanooga North / Cleveland KOA Journey sits amid rolling hills between the Cumberland Plateau and the Appalachians, within reach of Lookout Mountain, Ruby Falls, the Incline Railway, Rock City, the Tennessee Aquarium, and Point Park. Hawkins Pointe RV Park and Holiday Travel Park of Chattanooga add full-hookup options closer to the city, while Round Pond Retreat offers a smaller, quieter setting.
For a state-park experience, Harrison Bay State Park sits on approximately 40 miles of Chickamauga Lake shoreline in Hamilton County, just north of Chattanooga, and was originally developed as a TVA recreation area in the 1930s, becoming Tennessee's first state park in 1937.
Things to do near Varnell
Water access is the main draw north of Varnell. Harrison Bay State Park offers lakeside hiking trails, fishing along the expansive shoreline, and a marina for boating and water sports, plus a golf course, tennis courts, and a beach area for swimming. Boaters can launch on Chickamauga Lake, and anglers target largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish.
Day trips from a Varnell base cover a wide range of family interests. Chattanooga's downtown attractions include the Tennessee Aquarium and the Lookout Mountain complex with Ruby Falls, Rock City, and the Incline Railway. Closer to home, Red Clay State Historic Park preserves the last seat of Cherokee national government before the Trail of Tears, and Fort Mountain State Park east of Chatsworth adds hiking and mountain-bike trails.
Whitewater rafting on the Ocoee River, about an hour northeast, is a summer favorite for older kids and teens.

The Varnell area has four distinct seasons with a long, warm shoulder on either side of summer. Spring arrives early: dogwood and redbud typically bloom from mid-March, and daytime highs climb into the 70s Fahrenheit by April. This is a strong window for RV travel, with mild days, cool nights, and moderate campground occupancy before school lets out.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August. Weekend sites at popular parks fill well in advance, particularly around Independence Day and Labor Day. Fall brings the region's most reliable weather: cool nights, low humidity, and peak leaf color across the North Georgia mountains from mid-October into early November.
Winter camping is viable but variable. Peak season at Harrison Bay State Park runs April through October when the camp store is staffed, and the maximum stay is 14 consecutive nights, extended to 28 nights from December 1 through February 28. Private parks along I-75 generally stay open through the cold months, though amenities such as pools close seasonally.
How to book campgrounds near Varnell
Booking windows vary by operator. Advanced reservations at Tennessee State Parks, including Harrison Bay, may be made up to one year in advance, with a non-refundable advanced reservation fee per campsite. Reservations can be made through the Tennessee State Parks booking system.
Private parks including Chattanooga North / Cleveland KOA Journey, Hawkins Pointe RV Park, Holiday Travel Park of Chattanooga, and Round Pond Retreat take direct online or phone bookings through their operator websites. KOA policies generally require additional notice for holiday and special-event cancellations, so check each site's terms before booking.
For summer weekends and fall-color weekends in October, aim to reserve six to ten weeks ahead. Weeknights and shoulder-season dates usually have availability closer in.
What to expect on the ground
Roads in and around Varnell are easy for larger rigs. I-75 provides direct access, and secondary routes toward Dalton, Cleveland, and Chattanooga are paved and gentle in grade. Approaches into the Cohutta Wilderness and Fort Mountain involve steeper mountain roads that require lower gears in a loaded RV.
Site quality differs by property. KOA and other I-75 parks lean toward level pull-throughs with full hookups, useful for overnight travelers. At Harrison Bay, Loop A has the most level sites and the best waterfront positions, Loop D is tent-only and shaded, and Loops B and C have tight turns and uneven terrain.
Expect Eastern Time, cell coverage that thins in the mountains, and biting insects from late spring through early fall. Tennessee State Parks asks that all campfires be made with heat-treated wood or downed wood collected inside the park, so plan to buy locally rather than hauling untreated wood in.
