Campgrounds near Ainaloa
Ainaloa is a residential subdivision in the Puna district on the east side of Hawaii Island, roughly fifteen miles south of Hilo along Highway 130. The area sits in lowland rainforest between Pahoa and Keaau, giving RV travelers access to both the Hilo side and the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Private campgrounds and farm stays are the practical option for RV renters in this area. Hawaii's Best Campspot is the closest listed site for camping near Ainaloa, and other small private properties in Puna offer jungle sites and farm-based stays.
Public camping on the Big Island is limited and permit-based. Sites are administered separately by Hawaii County Parks, Hawaii State Parks, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and each system uses its own reservation platform. Renters basing near Ainaloa typically combine a private site close to town with day trips to state and national park lands nearby.
Things to do near Ainaloa
The Puna coast is the main draw. Lava Tree State Monument, with its lava-cast ohia trunks, sits just east of Pahoa, and the black-sand shore at Isaac Hale Beach Park (Pohoiki) is a short drive down Highway 137. The 2018 Kilauea eruption reshaped parts of lower Puna, so check current road and access conditions before setting out.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is roughly an hour southwest by road. Visitors can walk the Kilauea Iki Trail, tour the Nahuku (Thurston) lava tube area, and drive Chain of Craters Road to the coast. On the Hilo side, Rainbow Falls, the Imiloa Astronomy Center, and the Saturday farmers market are easy half-day outings.
For waterfalls and rainforest hikes, the Hamakua Coast north of Hilo, including Akaka Falls State Park, is a straightforward day trip.

Puna sits on the windward side of the island and is wet year-round. Hilo has a tropical rainforest climate with warm temperatures throughout the year, and rainfall is very abundant and spread fairly evenly across the calendar, though fall is typically the wettest season. Nearby Hilo collects well over one hundred inches of rain a year, and the Ainaloa area is comparably wet.
Late spring through summer tends to bring the driest, most stable weather and the busiest booking calendar. Winter is slightly cooler, with heavier rain events and occasional high surf on the east-facing coast. Trade winds are steady most of the year and help keep afternoons tolerable.
Elevation matters for day trips. The Namakanipaio campground in Hawaii Volcanoes sits at 4,000 feet on the slope of Mauna Loa, and it can be cool and damp there, especially at night, so pack layers even when the coast is warm.
How to book
Private sites near Ainaloa, including Hawaii's Best Campspot, are booked directly through the host or through a listing platform. Reserve early for summer and holiday weeks, and confirm whether the property accepts RVs, campervans, or tents only.
Public land bookings use separate systems. Hawaii County parks accept camping permit reservations up to one year in advance through the county's online portal. Hawaii State Parks on Hawaii Island (Kalopa State Recreation Area) open reservations 90 days in advance through the DLNR camping site, while Kiholo State Park Reserve opens 30 days ahead. In Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Namakanipaio is first-come, first-served with a fee paid on site, and Kulanaokuaiki is reservable through Recreation.gov.
County and state permits must be arranged before arrival, as they are not sold at the campgrounds themselves.
What to expect
Expect rainforest conditions. Rain can fall at any time of day, roads are narrow in the subdivisions, and cell coverage is patchy once away from Highway 130. Bring rain gear, quick-dry clothing, and insect repellent.
Amenities at private sites in Puna vary widely. Some offer hookups, others provide only a level pad, water, and shared restrooms. Some camper rental companies restrict travel on certain roads, so verify the rental agreement covers the specific access route before committing to a site.
The community is rural and quiet, with active small farms mixed among the house lots. Coqui frogs are common at night, roosters start early, and small stores in Pahoa and Keaau handle groceries, fuel, and propane.
