Camping near Tiki Gardens, Hawaii
Tiki Gardens is a small census-designated place in the Puna district of Hawaii Island, sitting inland between Hilo and Pahoa at roughly 620 feet of elevation. The surrounding landscape is tropical rainforest built on relatively young lava flows, with the Puna coastline a short drive to the east and Hilo about twenty minutes north. RV travelers use the area as a base for the windward Big Island and for reaching Hawaii Volcanoes National Park along Highway 11.
Camping options on this side of the island are limited compared with mainland destinations. County beach parks, state recreation areas, and a small number of private campgrounds handle most overnight stays. Hawaii County beach parks along the Puna and Hilo coast offer tent and vehicle camping with permits, while private sites such as Hawaii's Best Campspot cater specifically to RV and van travelers.
Roads through Puna are paved but narrow in places, and large Class A rigs are uncommon. Class C motorhomes, camper vans, and truck campers are the practical choice for most itineraries out of Hilo International Airport.
Things to do near Tiki Gardens
The main regional draw is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home to Kilauea and Mauna Loa. Chain of Craters Road, the Kilauea Iki Trail, and the surrounding summit overlooks are standard first-day stops, and the caldera can glow after dark when the volcano is active. Rangers post current viewing and air-quality conditions daily at visitor centers.
Closer to Tiki Gardens, the Puna coast has the black-sand beach at Isaac Hale Beach Park and the ohia forest at Lava Tree State Monument. Hilo adds Rainbow Falls, Akaka Falls State Park, the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo, and a well-known Saturday farmers market. Families often pair one volcano day with lower-key beach and waterfall days, since drive times across the Big Island are longer than they look on the map.

Temperatures on the windward side of the Big Island are steady year-round. Hilo averages daytime highs near 73°F in winter and around 81°F in late summer, with August and September the warmest months and January and February the coolest. What actually changes month to month is rainfall and cloud cover, not heat.
Late fall through spring is the wettest stretch. November is typically the single wettest month in Hilo, averaging around 16 inches, with March and April not far behind. Cloud cover runs above 68 percent from March through May. Booking flexibility helps during this window, since heavy rain events can temporarily close low-lying county park campsites.
Late spring and early summer are the drier, sunnier part of the year. June is the driest month in Hilo, averaging roughly 5 to 8 inches depending on the station. Summer and the winter holidays are the busiest travel periods, so RV inventory and campsite reservations tighten well in advance.
How to book campgrounds near Tiki Gardens
Reservation systems vary by operator. Namakanipaio Campground inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is managed by the park concessioner, Hawaii Volcanoes Lodge Company, and is booked directly through the Volcano House website or phone line, with campsite reservations opening about six months in advance. Note that Namakanipaio does not allow RVs or trailers, though camper vans are permitted in designated parking areas. Kulanaokuaiki Campground, also inside the park, is first-come, first-served.
Hawaii State Parks require advance permits through the state camping portal, and Hawaii County beach parks require a separate county permit. Both cap stay lengths and can fill for holidays and long weekends. Private campgrounds such as Hawaii's Best Campspot book directly through their own site or through the RV rental platform used for the trip. RV renters should confirm site length, hookup type, and allowed rig class before finalizing.
What to expect on the ground
Expect frequent, brief rain even on otherwise sunny days. Airport measurements show that most of Hilo's rain falls at night, with the early afternoon typically the driest window, so trips are workable despite the high annual totals. Awnings, quick-dry gear, and sealed storage bins all help.
Cell coverage is solid in Hilo and along Highway 11 but patchy in interior Puna and inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Download offline maps before leaving town. Groceries, propane, and dump stations are easiest to handle in Hilo before heading south.
Mosquitoes, coqui frogs at night, and volcanic fog near the park are the common surprises. Sulfur dioxide levels near active vents can affect people with asthma, and the National Park Service posts daily air-quality advisories at park visitor centers.
