Camping near Hawaiian Acres
Hawaiian Acres is a large rural subdivision in the Puna District on the east side of Hawai'i Island, sitting on the windward slope between Kurtistown and Mountain View. The location puts RV travelers roughly a half-hour drive from Hilo and within easy reach of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park along Highway 11.
Developed RV camping options in the immediate area are limited. Hawaii's Best Campspot is the closest listed campground and serves as a practical base for exploring the Puna coast, Hilo, and the volcano country. Most travelers combine a private-site stay here with day trips inland and to the coast.
Inside the national park, drive-in camping is concentrated in the Kīlauea summit area. The park's two drive-in campgrounds, Nāmakanipaio and Kulanaokuaiki, sit between roughly 2,700 and 4,000 feet elevation and are tent-oriented, with no hookups. RV renters typically park a rig at a private campground closer to Hawaiian Acres and visit the park by day.
Things to do near Hawaiian Acres
Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is the anchor attraction. Crater Rim Drive, the Kīlauea Visitor Center, Halema'uma'u overlooks, the Kīlauea Iki trail, the Nāhuku (Thurston) Lava Tube, and the Chain of Craters Road down to the coast are all reachable as day trips from Hawaiian Acres. Night visits to see any active crater glow are popular after day crowds thin.
On the coast side, the Puna scenic drive passes tide pools, warm ponds, and black-sand shoreline. Hilo adds the Lili'uokalani Gardens, Rainbow Falls, Wailuku River State Park, and farmers markets. Family-friendly stops include Akatsuka Orchid Gardens and the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut visitor area.
Higher up, clear-weather drives toward the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station offer stargazing at 9,200 feet.

Fall tends to be the wettest stretch, with November often the single rainiest month, while late spring into early fall usually brings the driest and sunniest windows for outdoor plans.
Summer is the busiest visitor season. Campsites in the national park, particularly Nāmakanipaio, fill quickly on summer weekends and around U.S. holidays. Spring shoulder weeks and early fall generally offer easier availability and lower crowds while keeping warm ocean temperatures.
Winter is mild at sea level but noticeably cooler and damper at Kīlauea's 4,000-foot elevation, where overnight lows can drop into the 40s Fahrenheit. Central Pacific hurricane season runs June through November, and eruption activity at Kīlauea can force short-notice trail or road closures at any time of year.
