Campgrounds and RV parks near Mountain View, HI

The main draw is Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Visitors can see two active volcanoes: Kīlauea, where glowing lava is at times visible at Halemaʻumaʻu, and Mauna Loa, the largest subaerial volcano on Earth. Popular stops include the Kīlauea Visitor Center, crater overlooks, the Nahuku (Thurston) Lava Tube, and pullouts along Chain of Craters Road. Hiking ranges from short crater-rim walks to multi-day backcountry routes across alpine desert, lava tubes, oceanside lava flows, rainforest, and beaches. North of Mountain View, Hilo offers farmers markets, waterfalls such as Rainbow Falls and ʻAkaka Falls, and black-sand beaches. Wildlife viewing includes nēnē geese in the park and green sea turtles at Punaluʻu Beach to the south.

The Mountain View and Hilo side of the Big Island is wet year round. Hilo experiences a tropical rainforest climate with warm temperatures year-round, and rainfall is very abundant and spread fairly evenly throughout the year, though fall is typically the wettest season. Rain gear and quick-dry clothing are essential regardless of month. Summer and early fall bring the warmest, most humid conditions and the highest visitor demand, which fills park campgrounds and private sites well in advance. November is typically the wettest month in Hilo, with heavier storms and occasional flooding possible after major rain events. Temperatures are stable near the coast but drop noticeably at higher elevations inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, where nights near 4,000 feet are cool and damp. Central Pacific hurricane season runs June through November, so trip planners should monitor National Weather Service Honolulu advisories during that window. Most campgrounds in this area are rustic. Full RV hookups are rare, cell service is spotty in the rainforest and inside the national park, and roads into private properties can be narrow with tight turns. Travelers in larger Class A or fifth-wheel rigs should confirm access clearances with hosts before booking, and note that RVs and trailers are not allowed at Namakanipaio. Namakanipaio has picnic tables, fire pits, flush toilets, and drinking water spigots, but hot showers are available only for cabin guests, not tent campers. Plan to top off water and use dump stations in Hilo before heading up to the volcano. Bring layers. Evenings at higher elevations are cool and damp, mosquitoes are common in the rainforest zone, and cleaning boots between trails helps slow the spread of Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death affecting native trees.
