Campgrounds and RV parks near Fern Forest, HI

Fern Forest is a rural community in the Puna District on the east side of Hawaiʻi Island, sitting at roughly 2,260 feet elevation in a tropical rainforest zone. The area is a census-designated place in Hawaiʻi County, located in the District of Puna, on the upper slopes above Highway 11 between Hilo and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Hilo, the largest town on this side of the island, sits to the north and serves as the main resupply hub for campers. RV renters use Fern Forest as a quiet base between Hilo's services and the volcano country to the south. Hawaii's Best Campspot is the closest listed option for travellers who want to stay near the community itself. For those willing to drive a short distance, the Kīlauea summit area of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park offers additional tent-based options, though RVs and trailers are not permitted at either park campground. The Puna climate is mild and tropical with abundant rainfall, and although downpours are often heavy, flooding is typically limited by the porous volcanic terrain. Expect misty mornings, dense ferns, and cool nights at elevation.

Reservation rules vary by operator. Private campgrounds such as Hawaii's Best Campspot are booked directly through the operator or through the listing platform where the site is advertised, and RV renters should confirm rig-length limits, hookups, and check-in windows in advance. Inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, the two drive-in campgrounds run differently. Nāmakanipaio Campground is managed by Hawaiʻi Volcanoes Lodge Company under a concession contract, with tent sites and cabin reservations handled through hawaiivolcanohouse.com or by phone. Kulanaokuaiki Campground is a quieter, first-come, first-served option with nine tent-only sites and no water available. Backcountry camping is allowed only at designated sites or cabins with a park-issued permit. Park entrance fees apply on top of any campground fee.
