Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is the main draw, with expansive lava fields, volcanic formations, staggering cliff sides, apocalyptic craters, lush rainforests, and wide open deserts, plus the Kīlauea Iki Trail, Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube), and viewpoints for the Halemaʻumaʻu caldera glow after dark. The park is open around the clock, so evening visits to see any active glow are common. Closer to camp, the Puna coastline offers black sand at Isaac Hale Beach Park (Pohoiki), tide pools, and the small town of Pāhoa for food and supplies. Hilo adds Rainbow Falls, ʻAkaka Falls State Park, farmers markets, and the ʻImiloa Astronomy Center. Adventure add-ons include ziplines along the Hāmākua Coast, snorkeling on the Kona side, and stargazing near the Maunakea Visitor Information Station at about 9,200 feet.

Hilo has a tropical rainforest climate with substantial rainfall throughout the year, and its location on the windward coast makes it one of the wettest cities in the United States. Temperatures are steady year-round, but rainfall shifts noticeably by season and by elevation, so a site near sea level in Puna can feel very different from a campground at 4,000 feet inside the national park. November is typically the wettest month in Hilo, with average monthly precipitation around 18 inches, and fall carries the highest seasonal precipitation totals. Late spring through early summer tends to be the drier stretch on the east side, and summer school-break weeks are the busiest for the national park and for private Puna sites. Central Pacific hurricane season runs June through November, and while direct strikes are rare, tropical systems can force closures and reroutes. Kulanaokuaiki Campground sits at 2,700 feet and can have night time temperatures as low as the high 40s, so campers should pack for cooler weather at elevation even in summer. Winter nights in Puna are mild but damp.

Puna roads are narrow, winding, and can be rough in spots, especially on secondary lanes off Highway 130. A rental RV will fit main routes, but confirm access with any private host before arrival, since some driveways and gates are tight. Expect frequent rain showers, high humidity, and coqui frog calls at night. Services are limited near the national park: Volcano Village has a small market and a gas station, but specialized supplies mean a drive to Hilo. Stock groceries, water, and propane in Hilo before heading out. Island weather is unpredictable, so visitors should be prepared for rain and wear layers. At the 4,000 foot summit of Kīlauea temperatures may be 12 to 15 degrees cooler than at sea level, while coastal areas are often hot, dry, and windy with the possibility of passing showers. Respect closed areas around active vents and recent flows; conditions change and rangers post updates at the Kīlauea Visitor Center.
