Oakley camping overview
Oakley sits in south-central Idaho's Cassia County, roughly a half-hour drive from the granite spires of City of Rocks National Reserve and the adjacent Castle Rocks State Park. The reserve is jointly managed by the National Park Service and the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation, and it encompasses 14,407 acres known for scenic, geologic, and historic significance along the old California Trail.
Campers based near Oakley typically use one of several nearby options. Elephant Rocks - City Of Rocks National Reserve and City of Rocks Natural Reserve - Window Arch Area sit inside the reserve among granite formations and pinyon-juniper woodland. Just outside the reserve, City of Rocks RV offers pull-through sites with partial hookups near the park entrance. Smoky Mountain Campground - Castle Rocks State Park provides a full-service base with paved pads and hot showers, and City of Rocks Camp and Climb rounds out the private-side choices.
Elevations across the reserve reach up to about 7,500 feet, so nights stay cool even in midsummer. The Oakley approach road is dirt and washboarded in sections, while the Almo approach from the north is paved.
Things to do near Oakley
Rock climbing drives most trips here. City of Rocks is one of the top granite climbing areas in the country, with roughly 700 developed routes ranging from short sport lines to multi-pitch trad climbs on the Almo Pluton. Castle Rocks State Park adds hundreds more routes and quality sport climbing on similar granite.
Hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails link the two parks and thread between formations, arches, and pioneer inscriptions from the California Trail. Birding, wildflower walks, and stargazing are common non-climbing draws, and Almo offers a small general store, cafe, and steakhouse for post-climb meals.
For families, short interpretive stops such as Register Rock and Bath Rock work well, along with easy loop trails accessible from most reserve campsites.

December - February

The main camping season runs from late spring through early fall. May and September typically bring milder days, fewer crowds, and better site availability, while June through August is the peak booking window and popular sites can fill weeks in advance. Summer days can be hot in the valley, though the reserve's higher elevations run noticeably cooler than the Almo area.
Spring brings the wettest weather of the year, with occasional thunderstorms and muddy dirt-road sections. Fall cools quickly, brings color to the aspen and mountain mahogany, and generally offers stable climbing weather into October before overnight lows drop toward freezing.
Winter access continues, but conditions change substantially. Water at Smoky Mountain Campground and the dump station is only available through the summer, and shower buildings typically close for the cold months, leaving vault and pit toilets in service. Snow and ice make some park roads difficult, though the reserve remains open for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on quiet days.
How to book near Oakley
Campsites inside City of Rocks National Reserve, including Elephant Rocks - City Of Rocks National Reserve and City of Rocks Natural Reserve - Window Arch Area, are reserved through the Idaho State Parks system at getoutside.idaho.gov, not through Recreation.gov. The reserve manages roughly 63 individual sites and 2 group sites spread across designated camping areas, and popular climbing-adjacent sites go quickly for summer weekends.
Smoky Mountain Campground - Castle Rocks State Park uses the same Idaho State Parks reservation system, with a booking window that opens up to nine months in advance. Reservations are required year-round, and campers cannot stay more than 14 nights in any 30-day period.
City of Rocks RV and City of Rocks Camp and Climb are private campgrounds and book directly through the operators. For big rigs, confirm site length and access before arrival.
What to expect at Oakley campgrounds
Reserve sites are dispersed rather than clustered, with picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets, but no water or electric hookups at individual sites. Seasonal water is available at the visitor center and Bath Rock, and a public dump station is located near Almo. Cell service is spotty across the reserve.
Smoky Mountain Campground - Castle Rocks State Park is the most RV-friendly option nearby, with paved pads, water and 30-amp electric hookups, flush toilets, hot showers in season, and a dump station on the access road. Sites include both back-in and pull-through configurations, with pads of about 42 or 60 feet.
GPS routing can misdirect drivers, so use the written directions from the reservation site and expect dirt road if approaching from Oakley. Bring layers for large day-to-night temperature swings, and stock up in Burley or Twin Falls, since Almo has only a small general store.

nps.gov/crmo/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Oakley, ID?
You're spoiled for choice. Top campgrounds near Oakley start with City of Rocks National Reserve, where reservable sites tuck between granite spires (booked through the Idaho State Parks reservation system). Smoky Mountain Campground at Castle Rocks State Park offers hookups, flush restrooms, and showers just minutes from Almo. Oakley City RV Park has a handful of in-town hookup sites at budget-friendly rates. Lake Cleveland Campground on Mount Harrison gives you cool alpine nights near 8,000 feet, and nearby Sawtooth National Forest sites in the South Hills are quieter options. Local insider tip: time your trip with the Cassia County Fair in August for an unforgettable evening in town.
parksandrecreation.idaho.gov/parks/castle-rocks/When is the best time to visit Oakley in an RV?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Oakley. July and August days in the valley typically run in the upper 80s to mid 90s, with nights cooling into the 50s, perfect sleeping weather in an RV. June brings wildflowers to City of Rocks and 70s daytime highs, ideal for climbing and hiking. September is the local insider pick: warm days, cool nights, fewer crowds, and golden aspens up on Mount Harrison. Winters are cold with snow and seasonal Forest Service road closures, so most rentals operate May through October. Late April can be windy but offers some of the cheapest rates.
weather.gov/pih/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Oakley?
You've got this, Oakley is one of the easier places in Idaho to learn. Roads are wide, traffic is light, and the drive in from I-84 at Burley along Highway 27 is flat and straight. Every RVezy host gives a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, slide-outs, dumping, and driving tips, so a first time renting an RV here feels manageable. If you're nervous about the narrow gravel switchbacks into City of Rocks, book a smaller Class C or travel trailer under 25 feet, or arrange host delivery. Pro tip: practice backing up in the wide gravel lot at Oakley City Park before heading to camp.
itd.idaho.gov/What happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're never stuck alone. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with a protection plan, so whether you blow a tire on the dirt road to Almo, lock yourself out at Castle Rocks, or run out of fuel between Oakley and Lava Hot Springs, one phone call gets help dispatched. For mechanical questions specific to your rig, your host is also just a message away, most respond within minutes. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after the trip for anything else. Pro tip: cell service can be spotty in the South Hills and around City of Rocks, save the roadside number to your phone before you head out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Oakley RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, multi-state RV road trips from Oakley are popular and easy to arrange. Utah is just 15 miles south, Nevada is about 75 miles, and Wyoming, Montana, and Oregon are all within a day's drive, all covered under standard RVezy protection in the U.S. Travel into Canada may be allowed but requires host approval and confirmation of cross-border coverage, so message the host before you book. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because coverage doesn't extend there. Popular routes include Oakley to Bear Lake (about 110 miles), Oakley to Jackson, WY (about 280 miles), and the loop through Craters of the Moon and Sun Valley.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an Oakley RV trip?
Fuel is one of the more predictable costs of an RV trip in Oakley. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 MPG, Class B campervans 16 to 20 MPG, and if you're towing a travel trailer with your own truck plan on 10 to 14 MPG. Gas in the Burley/Oakley area generally runs slightly below the national average since you're in a rural Idaho market. Top off in Burley before heading to City of Rocks, the closest reliable station to Almo is limited and pricier. Pro tip: a 4-day trip to City of Rocks and back from Oakley usually burns $80 to $140 in fuel for a mid-size motorhome.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Oakley?
For the best sites, book early but don't stress. City of Rocks National Reserve and Castle Rocks State Park campsites are reserved through the Idaho State Parks reservation system and open up roughly 9 months in advance, with July and August weekends filling fastest. Oakley City RV Park is mostly first-come, first-served and rarely fills outside fair week. For dispersed Sawtooth National Forest camping in the South Hills, no reservation is needed, just follow Leave No Trace. Pro tip: if you can't get a weekend at City of Rocks, grab a Sunday through Wednesday slot at Smoky Mountain Campground in Castle Rocks State Park, just as scenic and far less crowded.
parksandrecreation.idaho.gov/reservations/What are the local driving conditions like around Oakley?
Driving an RV around Oakley is refreshingly mellow compared to most destinations. Highway 27 north to Burley and I-84 is flat, straight, and almost always traffic-free. The 16-mile drive south to Almo and City of Rocks is paved but winds through scenic ranch country, with a few short grades. The final access road into City of Rocks is well-maintained gravel, perfectly drivable in any RV, just go slow. Watch for cattle on open range south of town, deer at dawn and dusk, and sudden afternoon thunderstorms in July that can drop visibility fast. Check Idaho 511 before heading up to Pomerelle or Mount Harrison, snow lingers into June at elevation.
511.idaho.gov/What hookups and amenities should I expect at Oakley-area campgrounds?
You'll find a good mix. Oakley City RV Park offers water and electric hookups in town. Smoky Mountain Campground at Castle Rocks State Park has hookups, flush restrooms, and hot showers. City of Rocks National Reserve campsites are dry (no hookups) with vault toilets, so arrive with full fresh water and empty waste tanks; the nearest dump station and potable fill is in the Almo area. Lake Cleveland and nearby Sawtooth National Forest sites are vault-toilet, no-hookup spots. Pro tip: top off water in Burley if you're heading deep into the South Hills.
nps.gov/ciro/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat features come standard in an Oakley motorhome rental?
You'll be comfortable. A typical motorhome rental in Oakley comes equipped with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa for extra sleepers, a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Most rigs include a TV, and many hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots or Starlink, a real perk given spotty cell coverage around City of Rocks. Onboard generators are common on Class C motorhomes, useful for dry camping at City of Rocks. Campervan rental Oakley options are smaller but include the basics plus easier maneuverability on gravel roads near Almo.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oakley%2C%20IdahoWhat add-ons and pickup options can I choose for my Oakley RV?
Lots of helpful extras. When you rent an RV in Oakley, hosts commonly offer add-ons like camp chairs and table sets, propane refills, generator hours, bedding and kitchen kits, bike racks, and outdoor grills, each priced individually on the listing. Pickup is typically at the host's location around Oakley, Burley, or Twin Falls, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Many hosts also offer delivery to City of Rocks or Castle Rocks for a flat fee based on distance. Mileage policies usually run 100 to 150 free miles per day, with extras around $0.35 to $0.50 per mile. Pro tip: ask about the generator add-on if you're heading to dry sites at City of Rocks.
nps.gov/ciro/planyourvisit/fees.htmHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Idaho through RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, no cash exchanges with the host. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is placed as a hold on your card before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV is returned in good condition and tanks are emptied. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos of the interior and exterior at pickup and drop-off, empty the black and gray tanks before return, and refuel to the level on the contract.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's the local insider move for a first-time Oakley RV trip?
Here's the play locals love: base out of Smoky Mountain Campground at Castle Rocks State Park (hookups, showers, easy access), then day-trip into City of Rocks National Reserve for climbing, hiking the Window Arch trail, and sunset at Bath Rock. Spend a morning wandering Oakley's historic district, the town has one of the highest concentrations of National Register listed buildings in Idaho, with stone and Victorian homes dating to the 1880s. Grab lunch in Almo, then cool off in the evening up at Lake Cleveland. A family RV trip Oakley itinerary like this fits in 3 to 4 nights and hits everything the area is famous for.
