Campgrounds and RV parks near St. Maries, ID

The St. Joe River draws fly anglers, floaters, and paddlers, with lower stretches near town calm enough for drift boating, canoeing, and inner tubing, and upper segments producing whitewater in spring and early summer. The clear-water St. Joe is known for westslope cutthroat trout, with peak fishing from June through September. Heyburn State Park, about ten minutes from town, sits on the south end of Lake Coeur d'Alene and offers swimming, boating, and access to the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes, a 72-mile paved rail-trail that runs from Mullan to Plummer. Farther east, the Route of the Hiawatha rail-trail weaves through long tunnels and across steel trestles in the Bitterroot Mountains. The surrounding forests support elk, moose, deer, bear, and huckleberry picking in mid to late summer.

The camping window in this part of North Idaho is driven by snow, which falls primarily from November through March and pushes most forest and BLM campgrounds to a late-spring opening. Huckleberry Campground on the St. Joe River takes reservations for arrivals between May 15 and September 30, and other public sites in the area follow a similar seasonal pattern. Heyburn State Park runs a longer season, with reservable sites from the Thursday before Memorial Day through Labor Day and first-come, first-served shoulder camping into early October. Spring brings high water and strong flows on the upper St. Joe, plus muddy access roads at higher elevations. Summer is the peak booking season, with warm, dry weather and weekend fills at private parks near Coeur d'Alene like Soaring Hawk RV Resort, Camp Coeur d Alene, and Wolf Lodge Campground. Fall cools quickly and brings elk activity along the river corridor, with hunting seasons drawing traffic to forest roads. The potable water system at Huckleberry typically shuts down the week of October 20, and can be turned off earlier if weather turns.

Cell coverage is spotty once travelers leave St. Maries or the I-90 corridor. Lost Moose Campground reports no cell service or wifi on site, with a landline available for emergencies, and there is little to no signal along the upper St. Joe River. Download maps before heading up St. Joe River Road or into the national forest. Hookups vary widely. Lost Moose does not have sewer hookups or a dump station because of its proximity to Latour Creek, but RV sites include power and water plus hot showers. Many riverfront BLM and forest sites offer electric and water but no sewer; Huckleberry has an on-site dump station for overnight guests. Out-of-state boaters need an Idaho invasive species sticker before launching. Bears and moose are present, so use bear-aware food storage, and expect gravel access roads on the way to more remote campgrounds.
