Campgrounds and RV parks near Eureka, MT

Lake Koocanusa is the main draw. The 46,500-acre reservoir has over 127 miles of shoreline and supports fishing for kokanee salmon, rainbow trout, bull trout, westslope cutthroat trout, and burbot. Boat ramps, swimming beaches, and day-use areas are spaced along both shores. On land, the Lake Koocanusa Scenic Byway follows Highway 37 between Eureka and Libby, with side trips to Libby Dam. Guided tours of the dam and powerhouse are offered at the visitor center throughout the summer. The Stone Hill area south of Rexford is a well-known rock-climbing destination, and the Ten Lakes area east of Eureka offers backcountry hiking. Families also use Eureka as a staging point for day trips: Glacier National Park's west side is reachable in a couple of hours, and Kikomun Creek Provincial Park across the border adds swimming beaches and painted-turtle viewing at Surveyors Lake.

The RV season around Eureka runs roughly from late May through September. Most Kootenai National Forest campgrounds on Lake Koocanusa operate seasonally, with Rexford Bench typically open from mid-spring into late September. Kikomun Creek Provincial Park in BC is generally open from spring through early fall, with peak reservable dates in summer. July and August bring the warmest, driest weather and the highest demand for sites near the water. Spring is variable: lake levels rise as snowmelt fills the reservoir, some access roads remain rough, and forest side loops may still be closed. Wildfire smoke can affect air quality in late summer, so travelers should check regional fire and air-quality advisories before arrival. Fall brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong wildlife viewing. Bald eagles can be seen hunting kokanee in the river and lake during the fall. Winter closes most developed campgrounds; a few private RV parks remain open, though snow and ice can make lakeside driving demanding.

Facilities vary widely. Forest Service campgrounds at Rexford Bench and other Koocanusa sites typically have accessible flush toilets and drinking water, but no utility hookups, with paved spurs at the larger campgrounds and vault toilets at smaller ones. Full hookups (power, water, sewer) are found at private parks in and around Eureka, not at forest sites. Expect standard bear-country practices: store food in the RV or a hard-sided container, keep coolers out of sight, and use provided fire rings. Cellphone coverage can be spotty in more remote areas, so download maps before leaving town. Lake levels on Koocanusa fluctuate through the season because it is an operating reservoir, so shoreline distance from campsites can change noticeably between June and September. Bring layered clothing; nighttime temperatures at valley elevations can drop into the 40s even in midsummer.
