Camping near Galena, Illinois
Galena sits in the Driftless region of northwest Illinois, where rolling wooded hills, limestone bluffs, and the Mississippi River shape the camping options. The town itself is a compact historic district of 19th-century brick buildings, and most campgrounds cluster within a short drive along U.S. Route 20 or across the river in Iowa and Wisconsin. RV travelers typically choose between commercial resorts with full hookups and pools and quieter state park campgrounds on the river bluffs.
Palace Camp Ground is the closest full-service option to downtown Galena, positioned along U.S. Route 20 with tent, cabin, and full-hookup RV sites. Rustic Barn RV Campground and the related Rustic Barn Campground & RV Park sit a short drive north in the tri-state area near Kieler, Wisconsin, and are known for level, well-spaced sites.
Across the Mississippi, Bellevue State Park Dyas Unit Campground offers electric and non-electric sites on a river bluff in Iowa, while Coconut Cove RV Resort delivers a resort-style stay above the river in Hazel Green, Wisconsin, with a floating aqua park on a 13-acre lake.
Things to do around Galena
Galena's Main Street is the anchor for most trips: blocks of 1800s brick buildings full of boutiques, wine rooms, and restaurants, plus the Ulysses S. Grant Home. Families staying at Palace Camp Ground can pair a downtown afternoon with mini golf, a pool, and easy resupply at the Walmart next door.
Outdoor options fan out in every direction. Anglers reel in catfish and other species from the Mississippi River, and Horseshoe Mound Preserve above Galena delivers a wide tri-state view. Apple River Canyon State Park is roughly thirty minutes east for hiking, and Bellevue State Park adds bluff-top trails on the Iowa side.
Across the river, Dubuque is minutes away, home to the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, a strong rainy-day option with kids in tow.

The practical camping season in the Galena area runs from mid-April through late October. Palace Camp Ground operates April 1 to November 1, while Rustic Barn Campground & RV Park generally runs from mid-April to late October. Coconut Cove RV Resort is a seasonal park, open April 15 to October 15, with no tent or car camping permitted. Bellevue State Park's Dyas Unit is technically open year-round for camping, but park staff generally try to have the water on and shower buildings open by May 1 and start closing showers and turning off water around mid-October.
Late spring and early summer bring the greenest scenery and the most reliable warm-weather activities. June is the wettest month, averaging over five inches of rain, so campers should expect afternoon thunderstorms and plan around them.
Fall is a strong shoulder season. Peak color typically arrives in mid-October, and weekends fill quickly with visitors combining leaf viewing and downtown Galena shopping. Winter camping is limited: most private campgrounds close, and bluff-top sites can be cold and windy.
How to book a site
Private campgrounds around Galena, including Palace Camp Ground, Rustic Barn RV Campground, Rustic Barn Campground & RV Park, and Coconut Cove RV Resort, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends, the Galena July 4 period, and October color weekends book out earliest, so lock in dates several weeks ahead when possible.
Bellevue State Park Dyas Unit Campground uses the Iowa State Parks reservation system through ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made for today's date and up to three months in advance. The Dyas Unit has 46 camping units, 31 with electrical hookups, plus modern restrooms, showers, and a sanitary dump station. About half of the campsites are held for self-registration on a first-come, first-served basis.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain in and around Galena is hilly, with narrow entry roads at several campgrounds and pitched sites on the river bluffs. Bring extra leveling blocks. Sites at Palace Camp Ground are set close together in the interior rows, so travelers who want more elbow room tend to prefer Rustic Barn Campground & RV Park or Coconut Cove RV Resort.
Rail lines follow both sides of the Mississippi, and freight trains run through the night. Coconut Cove RV Resort in particular sits near active tracks, and light sleepers should request a site farther from the rails.
Cell coverage is generally usable in town and thinner in the bluffs and state parks. Full hookups are common at private resorts, while state park sites typically offer electric only with a central dump station. Firewood should be bought locally to comply with emerald ash borer quarantines.

Campervan rental Galena options can start around $125 nightly, which is great for couples exploring Main Street. To find a cheap RV rental Galena travelers love, book midweek, target shoulder months like late April or early October, and filter by Instant Book to grab last-minute host discounts. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Galena,IllinoisWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Galena?
Good news for first-time renters: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Galena for the vast majority of rigs on RVezy. Illinois only requires an upgraded non-commercial license for motorhomes over 16,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), and out-of-state visitors are recognized under their home-state classification. Almost every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on the platform falls well under that threshold. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you're ready to roll into Galena's rolling hills.
ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/drivers_license/classifications.htmlIs RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Galena includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can cruise Highway 20 and the back roads of Jo Daviess County with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle, and you choose the level of coverage that fits your trip during checkout, not the host. That means whether you're parked at Palace Campground or winding through Stagecoach Trail, help is one call away if a tire goes flat or the battery dies. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers before booking so you can pick the one that lets you relax and focus on the scenery, not the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Galena RV rental?
Booking is genuinely low-risk: RVezy sets and manages a clear cancellation policy that includes a full money-back grace period right after you book, so you can lock in that Galena RV trip without second-guessing. Refund outcomes depend on how far ahead of your trip you cancel. Because RVezy (not individual hosts) controls the policy, you get the same fair, consistent process whether you book a campervan or a fifth wheel. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credits so your trip plans stay protected. Pro tip: book early to secure peak fall-color weekends in October, then use the grace period to confirm campground reservations at Apple River Canyon State Park before anything is final.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Galena RV trip?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental Galena getaway is easy to arrange. On RVezy just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see dozens of hosts who welcome dogs, with some asking for a small pet fee or deposit you'll see upfront. Galena itself is famously dog-loving: leashed pups are welcome on Main Street's brick sidewalks, on the Galena River Trail, and at Apple River Canyon State Park, where pets are allowed on all trails when leashed. Pro tip: pack a long lead so your dog can splash in the Apple River at the picnic areas while you grill, and stop by the local dog-friendly patios on Main Street for a post-hike treat.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.applerivercanyon.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Galena?
Yes, RV delivery Galena is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a big rig down Highway 20 and into the Driftless Area's hills. Many Galena-area hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome rental Galena right at Palace Campground, Blanding Landing, or even a private cabin driveway in The Galena Territory, then walk you through everything from the awning to the water hookup. Filter by Delivery when you search, message the host with your campsite address, and confirm any per-mile delivery fee in advance. Pro tip: ask for delivery to Apple River Canyon State Park so you arrive to a fully set-up basecamp.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.applerivercanyon.htmlHow far can I drive, and do rentals come with unlimited mileage?
You've got plenty of range for a real Galena RV trip. Most RVezy hosts include a generous daily mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 free miles per day), and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which you can spot using the search filters. From Galena you can easily reach Dubuque, Iowa (17 miles), Mississippi Palisades State Park (30 miles), Apple River Canyon State Park (25 miles), Madison, Wisconsin (95 miles), and Chicago (165 miles). Extra miles typically run $0.30 to $0.45 each, so it's smart to estimate your route before booking. Pro tip: if you're planning a loop through the Great River Road, message the host to negotiate a mileage package upfront.
fhwa.dot.gov/byways/byways/2030Where are the best campgrounds near Galena, IL?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to the best campgrounds near Galena. Palace Campground sits minutes from downtown with full hookups and a seasonal pool, generally open from spring through late fall. Apple River Canyon State Park offers Class C sites with a dump station and drinking water, set against beautiful limestone-bluff scenery (best for rigs up to 25 feet). Mississippi Palisades State Park, about 30 minutes south, offers electric sites, showers, and river-bluff views. Blanding Landing (US Army Corps) hugs the Mississippi with electric sites and fire pits. Pro tip: reserve Illinois state park sites well ahead on ExploreMoreIL for fall-color weekends, they sell out fast.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.mississippipalisades.htmlWhen is the best time of year to visit Galena in an RV?
Galena truly shines from late April through late October, with the sweet spot being September and early October when daytime temperatures sit in the comfortable 65 to 75 degree Fahrenheit range and the Driftless Area hills explode with red and gold foliage. Summer (June to August) brings warm 80 degree days perfect for kayaking the Galena River and Apple River, while spring brings stocked trout fishing. Most local campgrounds open April 1 and close by November 1, so plan accordingly. Pro tip: the annual Galena Country Fair in mid-October and Halloween Parade are bucket-list events, book your RV camping Galena spot at least two months ahead for those weekends.
weather.gov/dvn/Can I rent an RV in Galena in the winter?
Yes, winter RV trips around Galena are absolutely possible and increasingly popular for ice fishing on the Mississippi, cross-country skiing at Chestnut Mountain Resort, and cozy snow weekends in The Galena Territory. January high temperatures average near 30 degrees Fahrenheit, so look for hosts whose listings mention heated tanks, propane furnaces, and shore-power capability. Mississippi Palisades State Park offers year-round camping options, while many private parks close for the season. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm the rig is winterized for active use (not just storage), and ask if they include extra propane bottles, you'll burn through them keeping toasty.
weather.gov/dvn/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay?
You'll be just fine, and Galena is a great place for first time renting an RV because most popular routes use wide, well-maintained highways like US-20 and IL-84 rather than tight city streets. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving tips, hookups, the propane system, and the waste tanks. You can also message your host with questions before you even book. If you'd rather skip driving entirely, choose a host that offers delivery to your campground. Pro tip: practice a few right turns in the campground loop before heading downtown, Galena's historic Main Street is narrow and one-way, so most renters park at the Old Train Depot lot and walk in.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/maps/highway-maps.htmlWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy rental in Galena includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so a flat tire on Stagecoach Trail or a dead battery at Blanding Landing is just a phone call away from help. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip to troubleshoot anything from a finicky generator to a slide-out hiccup. Your host is typically your fastest resource for quirks specific to their rig, most respond within minutes. Pro tip: save the roadside number, your host's phone number, and the nearest hospital (Midwest Medical Center in Galena) in your contacts the moment you pick up the keys.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rv-safetyWhat are popular RV road trips from Galena?
An RV road trip from Galena puts you within easy reach of some of the Midwest's most scenic drives. Head about 17 miles west across the Mississippi to Dubuque, Iowa for the National Mississippi River Museum, or cruise north on the Great River Road to charming Wisconsin towns like Prairie du Chien. Mississippi Palisades State Park is a quick 30-mile run south with dramatic bluff overlooks. Bigger adventures? Madison, Wisconsin is about 95 miles northeast, and the Wisconsin Dells are roughly 140 miles. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and proper paperwork, while Mexico travel is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: build in a stop in Stockton, the birthplace of Kraft processed cheese, for a fun bit of Illinois food trivia and a coffee break.
fhwa.dot.gov/byways/byways/2030How much should I budget for fuel on a Galena RV trip?
Fuel is very manageable in northwest Illinois, where gas prices typically run close to the national average and diesel is widely available at truck stops in East Dubuque and along US-20. Plan on roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class C motorhome, 10 to 14 for a campervan, and 12 to 18 mpg combined when towing a travel trailer with a pickup. A typical 3-night Galena loop covering Apple River Canyon, downtown, and Mississippi Palisades is about 120 miles of driving, so most renters spend $60 to $120 on fuel. Pro tip: fuel up in East Dubuque or Stockton rather than right downtown Galena, prices are usually $0.10 to $0.20 per gallon cheaper.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Galena?
For the best campgrounds near Galena, aim to reserve 2 to 4 months ahead for summer and fall weekends, and as much as 6 months out for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, and the October Halloween Parade weekend. Illinois state parks like Apple River Canyon and Mississippi Palisades take reservations through the ExploreMoreIL system up to 180 days in advance, with a $5 non-refundable reservation fee. Private parks like Palace Campground book directly on their website. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) often have same-week availability even in peak season, so if your schedule is flexible, you can score a last-minute Galena RV trip with no stress.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camp/reservation-information.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Galena?
Driving an RV around Galena is genuinely enjoyable thanks to the Driftless Area's rolling hills, sweeping curves, and light traffic on US-20 and IL-84. The terrain is hillier than most of Illinois, so take grades slowly and use lower gears on descents into the Mississippi River valley. Downtown Galena's Main Street is narrow, one-way, and lined with 19th-century buildings, do not drive an RV downtown. Park at the public lots on Bouthillier Street or near the Old Train Depot Visitor Center and walk across the pedestrian bridge. In winter, watch for black ice on shaded curves. Pro tip: avoid US-20 right around the Galena bridge on Saturday afternoons in October, foliage traffic backs up fast.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/winter-road-conditions.htmlWhat amenities will I find at Galena-area campgrounds?
Galena-area campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable trip. Palace Campground offers full 50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups, hot showers, laundry, and a seasonal pool. Apple River Canyon State Park's Canyon Ridge Campground has electric sites, a dump station, and potable water but no showers. Mississippi Palisades State Park provides full hookups, showers, flush toilets, and a dump station year-round. Most private parks include picnic tables, fire rings, and Wi-Fi (signal varies). Pro tip: cell service can be spotty in the canyons west of Stockton, so download offline Google Maps before heading out, and fill your freshwater tank at Palace or Mississippi Palisades, both have easy-access fill stations near the entrance.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.mississippipalisades.htmlWhat's included inside a typical Galena RV rental?
Most RVezy rentals in Galena come ready to camp, with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, comfy sleeping for 2 to 8 people depending on the rig, dinette seating with seatbelts, climate control, and a TV. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes often add generators, outdoor speakers, and electric awnings, while campervans focus on efficient layouts and great gas mileage. Wi-Fi and solar are increasingly common, just check the listing's amenity list. Pro tip: message the host to confirm whether kitchenware, linens, and outdoor chairs are included or available as add-ons, many Galena hosts throw in starter kits with local coffee or wine.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Galena?
Renting an RV in Galena, IL is flexible: hosts offer popular add-ons like generators ($25 to $50/day), bedding and towel packages ($30 to $75/trip), camp chairs and tables, bike racks, kayaks, and outdoor grills. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Galena, East Dubuque, Hanover, or Elizabeth, with delivery available for an additional per-mile fee. Mileage allowances typically include 100 to 150 free miles per day, with extras at $0.30 to $0.45 per mile. Generator hours and pet fees vary by listing and are clearly shown before you book. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a propane refill into one quote, many Galena hosts offer a discounted first-timer package if you just ask.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Galena,IllinoisHow does the security deposit and payment work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: RVezy processes your booking online with a credit or debit card, and you'll see the total cost, taxes, protection plan, and security deposit clearly laid out before you confirm. The security deposit is separate from the booking payment and is held on your card during the trip, then released after the RV is returned in the same condition. Deposit amounts vary by rig but commonly range from $500 to $1,500 for Galena rentals. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkaround video with your host at both pickup and drop-off. Pro tip: refill the freshwater tank and dump the gray and black tanks before returning, many Galena hosts charge a flat cleaning fee otherwise.
