Camping near New Boston, Illinois
New Boston sits on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River in Mercer County, with campgrounds clustered along both banks within a short drive. The area draws RV travelers for river access, quiet state-managed sites, and easy day trips into the Quad Cities region.
On the Illinois side, Big River State Forest covers roughly 2,900 acres along the Mississippi with tent and trailer sites in the Shady Pines area, while Delabar State Park occupies 89 acres of oak, birch and hickory woodland about a mile and a half north of Oquawka. Haven Hills Campground & Resort offers a private-park alternative with more developed amenities.
Across the river in Iowa, Wildcat Den State Park spans about 423 acres in Muscatine County, known for sandstone formations like the Devil's Punch Bowl and Fat Man's Squeeze, and Fairport State Recreation Area sits right on the Mississippi River with electric sites, modern restrooms, showers, and a trailer dump station. Together these give RV renters a mix of rustic riverfront, forested, and hookup-equipped options within about an hour's drive of New Boston.
Things to do around New Boston
The Mississippi River is the main draw. River fishing is popular at Delabar State Park, where a boat ramp on the south end provides access and anglers commonly catch channel cat, bass, bluegill and crappie. Two fishing docks and no motor size limit on the river make it easy to launch. Fairport adds more river access with three boat ramps and a fish cleaning station.
Hikers gravitate to Wildcat Den, where trails wind through sandstone bluffs and rock outcroppings and pass the historic Pine Creek Grist Mill, built in 1848 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At Big River State Forest, the Big Pines Trail system covers about 3.5 miles across the Lincoln, Wilderness and Big Pines trails, with a 60-mile network of firebreaks used by hikers and birders.
Wildlife watching is strong in every season, and Big River supports white-tailed deer, quail, squirrels and rabbits, plus waterfowl along the Mississippi.

The prime RV window runs from mid-spring through mid-fall. At Wildcat Den, the campground is closed January 1 through March 31, off-peak in April, peak from May 1 to October 15, off-peak October 16 to 31, then closed November 1 through December 31. Iowa state park staff generally aim to have water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by early May, and start winterizing them around mid-October depending on weather.
Spring brings high water on the Mississippi and lingering mud on trails; birders benefit from strong migration through the flyway. Summer is the busiest stretch, with warm humid days, thunderstorms, and mosquitoes near the river bottoms. Early fall delivers the best mix of cool nights and open facilities.
Winter is quiet but not empty. Ice fishing is a popular sport along Spring Slough at Big River State Forest, and Delabar's backwaters see anglers when ice is thick enough. Full hookups and modern restrooms are generally unavailable outside the posted season, so cold-weather campers should self-contain.
How to book campgrounds near New Boston
Illinois and Iowa run separate reservation systems. Illinois state sites, including Big River State Forest and Delabar State Park, are managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources through its ExploreMore reservation portal, and campers must obtain a permit from the park office. Tent and trailer sites at Big River are located in the Shady Pines area.
Iowa's parks use ReserveAmerica. Wildcat Den is 100 percent reservable and accepts reservations April 1 through October 31 until 10:00 pm CST the day of arrival, with a booking window of up to 12 months in advance. Fairport State Recreation Area also uses the online reservation system and is 100 percent reservable, with a reservation required. For Haven Hills Campground & Resort, book directly with the private operator.
What to expect on arrival
Expect basic to mid-level infrastructure. Delabar has more than 50 tent and trailer sites with 30-amp electric hookups, a dump station, drinking water, restrooms, and a jet pump for filling trailers, and the sites are generally not large enough for big rigs. At Big River State Forest, Shady Pines has no hookups but a dump station is available on site, with a stated maximum RV length of 40 feet.
On the Iowa side, Fairport sits along Highway 22 on the Mississippi with electric sites, modern showers and restrooms, a trailer dump station, and three boat ramps. Wildcat Den's campground has 28 non-modern sites with drinking water and vault toilets, no electric service, and no showers.
Cell service is spotty in the forests, ticks and mosquitoes are common in warm months, and firewood should be bought locally to slow the spread of invasive pests.
