Campgrounds and RV parks near Oquawka, IL

Oquawka is a small village on the Mississippi River in Henderson County, western Illinois, and it sits at the edge of a cluster of public lands that make it a practical base for RV travel. Delabar State Park lies along the Mississippi River about 1.5 miles north of Oquawka, an 89-acre park forested largely with oaks, birch, and hickory. Just up the Oquawka-Keithsburg blacktop, Big River State Forest preserves a large tract of Mississippi River woodland with hiking, camping, horseback riding, and hunting. Across the river in southeastern Iowa, Geode State Park centers on Lake Geode, a 187-acre lake within a 1,640-acre park, adding a lake-camping option about an hour from town. Haven Hills Campground & Resort and Fairport State Recreation Area round out the nearby choices, giving RV travelers a mix of state-run and private sites within an easy drive. The options cover most trip styles: electric state-park loops, more rustic forest camping, private-resort hookups, and river-access sites for boaters and anglers.

Booking rules vary by agency. At Delabar State Park, campers must obtain a permit from the park staff before setting up camp, and group camping is available with advance permission from the site superintendent required for groups of 25 or more. Big River State Forest operates on a similar permit basis at its Shady Pines camping area, and phone contact with the site office is the most reliable way to confirm availability. On the Iowa side, the Geode State Park campground is 100 percent reservable and accepts reservations April 1 through December 14 until 10:00 pm CST the day of arrival, booked through the Iowa State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Private options such as Haven Hills Campground & Resort book directly with the operator; call ahead for big rigs, weekends, and holiday weeks.
