Campgrounds and RV parks near Tilden, IL

Shooting sports dominate the local calendar. The World Shooting and Recreational Complex offers 120 trap houses stretching 3.5 miles, two sporting clays courses, 24 combination trap and skeet fields, and cowboy action shooting, and hosts the Amateur Trapshooting Association's Grand American Trapshooting Championships each summer, attracting more than 5,000 competitors and spectators from across the globe. Water and trail recreation anchor the state parks. At Randolph County State Recreation Area, the centrepiece is the 65-acre Randolph County Lake, stocked with bass, bluegill, channel catfish and rainbow trout, with a boat ramp (10 HP max), hiking trails through woods and around the lakeshore, and an additional 11.6 miles of equestrian trails. Lake Campalot adds swimming, kayaking, and family sports on-site. Day trips reach Chester, the Mississippi River, and Shawnee-area attractions.

Peak camping season runs from late spring through early fall. In this part of southern Illinois, summers are hot and muggy while winters are cold, snowy, and windy, so most RV travellers target May through October. Book well ahead for the Grand American window: the World Shooting and Recreational Complex hosts the ATA Grand American, and during that event in the first couple weeks of August the campground fills. Spring brings the wettest weather and greened-up lakes, ideal for fishing but with muddy trails after storms. Summer sees the highest heat and humidity, with limited shade at the shooting-complex campground because the facility sits on reclaimed strip mine with minimal tree coverage, so the camping area can become hot and dry during summer months. Fall offers cooler nights, lower humidity, and quieter campgrounds after Labor Day. Some private parks such as Lake Campalot operate on a seasonal calendar from April through October, while state-run sites in Illinois often reduce services or close loops from late fall through early spring, so confirm operating status before arriving.

Sites vary widely in service level. At Randolph County SRA, the campground provides 146 sites across multiple areas, with 51 Class BE sites offering electric hookups and 95 Class C sites providing full hookups including water and sewer, a dump station roughly one mile before the main entrance, gravel surfaces, and mature-tree shade with tight spacing. Showers are not available at this state site, so plan accordingly. The World Shooting and Recreational Complex is a large site built on reclaimed strip-mine ground with full-hookup and electric-only options, a six-spot dump station, and easy access to a lake. Expect flat, open terrain with limited shade and the sound of shooting during scheduled events. Cell coverage varies by carrier across the area; verify signal in advance if remote work matters.
