Campgrounds and RV parks near Bicknell, IN

Water recreation is a main draw. Sullivan County Park & Lake centers on a 461-acre lake stocked for fishing, with a boat ramp, swimming beach, and a nine-hole golf course on the grounds. Shakamak State Park adds three connected lakes covering about 400 acres of water for fishing and paddling, though boating is limited to electric trolling motors only. The park also has a family aquatic center, wooded hiking trails, and a saddle barn in season. Horse Camp at Red Hills State Park caters to equestrian visitors with a Class C equestrian campground and about five miles of horse and bike trails, plus a 40-acre lake with bank fishing for bass, crappie, and bluegill. Closer to town, Vincennes offers George Rogers Clark National Historical Park and Indiana Territorial capital sites for a half-day off the campground.

The Indiana camping season runs primarily from April through late October. Spring brings green-up and reliable fishing, but also the region's wettest stretch, with thunderstorms common from April into June. Trails and low-lying campsites can stay soft after heavy rain, so check conditions before booking a shaded, low-elevation loop. Summer is peak season. Weekends at Sullivan County Park & Lake, Shakamak State Park, and nearby private parks fill quickly, especially around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Book several weeks ahead for holiday weekends. Heat and humidity are the main considerations; sites with afternoon shade or full electric for air conditioning are worth prioritizing. Fall is often the most comfortable window. Cooler nights, lower bug pressure, and hardwood color through October make September and October strong choices. Shakamak is open year-round for camping, though services and some loops scale back after late October, so confirm the operating calendar before a late-season trip. Red Hills shifts to reduced fall and winter camping from October 1 through April 30.

Expect a mix of full-hookup RV sites, electric-and-water sites, and primitive tent areas. Sullivan County Park & Lake offers group and primitive tent camping without services, improved tent areas with water and electric, improved sites for trailers, fifth-wheels, and RVs with water and electric, and year-round sites with water, electric, and sewer. Both 30- and 50-amp service are available. Shakamak State Park has a mix of electric, full-hookup, non-electric, and cabin sites, with centralized dump stations and modern shower buildings. Red Hills offers more than 100 Class A sites with electricity and a sanitary dump station, plus a separate Class C equestrian loop. Cell service is generally reliable near Bicknell and Sullivan but can be spotty inside wooded state-park loops. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall, so pack repellent and check pets after trail time.
