Campgrounds near Borden, Indiana
Borden sits in Clark County in southern Indiana, roughly 20 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky. Deam Lake State Recreation Area is an Indiana State Recreation Area in Clark County, covering 1,300 acres at an elevation of 535 feet. The recreation area is the primary RV destination in the immediate area and is directly adjacent to Clark State Forest, giving campers access to a large block of public land within a short drive of the metro area.
The park is built around a 194-acre lake restricted to electric trolling motors, with a sandy swim beach, boat ramp, and a large campground that draws families, anglers, and equestrians. The park is home to four hiking trails and serves as a trailhead for the 80-mile Knobstone Trail, the longest hiking trail in Indiana.
RV travelers using Borden as a base are also within easy reach of Louisville attractions, Charlestown State Park, and Hardy Lake. Named options in the area include Horse Camp - Deam Lake State Recreation Area for equestrian rigs, Scottsburg/Raintree Lake KOA up the interstate, and private full-hookup options such as Add-more RV Park and Silver Lakes Motorhome Complex and RV Park.
Things to do near Borden
Water recreation centers on Deam Lake. A boat launching ramp is available for this electric trolling motor only lake, and rowboat and kayak rentals are typically offered from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The swimming beach is open from the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, with restrooms, dressing facilities, and showers available throughout the week.
Hikers and cyclists have strong trail access. Deam Lake SRA and Clark State Forest offer mountain bike trails, and mountain bikes are only permitted on those designated trails. Trail 3, the Yellow Trail, is the only multi-purpose trail that allows horses and is a six-mile loop that circles the lake.
Off-property, RV travelers commonly day-trip into Louisville for the waterfront, museums, and, in early May, Kentucky Derby events.

The main state-park campground does not operate year-round. Deam Lake State Recreation Area is open for year-round recreation, however the campground closes each year from the Sunday before Thanksgiving to March 1 of the following year. When it reopens in early spring, some amenities remain limited: water spigots may be shut off and modern restrooms closed during the shoulder months, with water service resuming based on weather forecasts.
Peak-season amenities are tied to the traditional summer window. The beach at Deam Lake is open from 8:00am to sunset, Memorial Day through Labor Day, lifeguards are not provided, and there is a beach house with a concessionaire that provides snacks and boat rentals. Kentucky Derby weekend also affects regional demand: though Deam Lake is in Indiana, the park is fewer than 20 miles from Louisville, and the Kentucky Derby, held the first Saturday in May, draws heavy traffic to the area.
Spring and fall shoulder seasons offer cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and reliable trail conditions, though early spring can be wet.
How to book near Borden
Reservations at the state recreation area go through the Indiana DNR system. Campsites and cabins are available for reservation up to six months in advance, either by calling 1-866-622-6746 or online at Camp.IN.gov. Advance reservations are recommended for weekends and holidays.
Site types are split across a family loop and an equestrian loop. Deam Lake SRA offers electric, equestrian electric, and rent-a-camp cabin camping, with 113 electric campsites in the family campground and additional stall and hitching-post sites in the horse loop. Equestrian travelers should book into Horse Camp - Deam Lake State Recreation Area, which includes stall access.
Cell coverage can be limited at most sites, so having reservation details printed or downloaded beforehand is advisable. Private parks such as Add-more RV Park and Silver Lakes Motorhome Complex and RV Park are booked directly with the operator.
What to expect at Borden campgrounds
The state recreation area is a wooded, hilly property, and site quality varies considerably across the property's multiple loops. The F loop draws consistent praise for better lake views, though some sites feature steep inclines that challenge RV setup, and campers report that some pads can be short and uneven. Larger rigs should confirm site length and pad levelness before booking.
Hookups are electric-only at most sites. All sites have electric hookups, water is not available at individual campsites, but spigots are located in the campground. A dump station for RVs and shower facilities are available on property.
Two current advisories are worth noting: Comfort Station #2, which serves Section E in the family campground, is closed for long-term foundational repairs, with two other modern shower and restroom buildings still open in the family campground. Blue-green algae is found in the lake year-round: do not drink the water, and shower after swimming.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Borden, IN
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Borden, IN?
RV rental in Borden, IN is one of the most affordable ways to explore southern Indiana, with travel trailers typically starting around $80 to $125 per night, Class C motorhomes around $175 to $250 per night, and luxury Class A rigs running $250 and up. Because Borden sits in rural Clark County (about 25 minutes from Louisville), prices tend to be lower than what you'd pay in big metros. To save even more on a cheap RV rental in Borden, book mid-week stays, target shoulder seasons like late April or early October, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: the Clark State Forest area gets very busy on fall-foliage weekends, so locking in your dates early protects the best rates.
in.gov/dnr/state-forests/forests/clark-state-forest/What license do I need to rent an RV in Borden, IN?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Borden. Indiana does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or a special endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally. To book on RVezy you generally need to be 25 or older and complete the platform's quick approved-driver verification at checkout, so there is no paperwork to print or notarize. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you are set. Most first-time renters are surprised how quick the whole process is, you can often be approved and booked the same day.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RVezy protection included when I rent an RV in Borden?
Yes, every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the back roads around Borden with real peace of mind. At checkout, you choose your protection level (not the host), so you can match coverage to your comfort and budget. The plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, and roadside help is built in: if you get a flat on State Road 60 or a dead battery at Deam Lake, one call gets a pro headed your way. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it is designed specifically for peer-to-peer RV rental in Borden and removes most of the financial what-ifs from your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is RVezy's cancellation policy for Borden RV rentals?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and the rules are standardized across the platform, so you will not see different terms buried in each listing. Your refund depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date, and RVezy support can help in cases involving severe weather or other major disruptions, which is useful since southern Indiana can occasionally see spring storms or winter ice events. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your plans are protected. If you ever need to change dates for your Borden RV trip, reach out to your host first, most are happy to work with you, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Borden?
Absolutely, pets are part of the family and a pet-friendly RV rental in Borden, IN is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search, and you'll see listings from hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) with clear rules on pet fees and shedding policies. Once you arrive, you'll love how dog-friendly the area is: Deam Lake State Recreation Area allows leashed pets on trails and at most campsites, and Clark State Forest offers shaded woodland hikes that are perfect for cooler-pawed companions. Pro tip: bring a long tie-out and a collapsible water bowl, summer humidity in southern Indiana can sneak up on dogs, so plan walks for early morning or evening.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/deam-lake-state-recreation-area/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Borden?
Yes, RV delivery in Borden is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a big rig on day one. Many local hosts will deliver your motorhome or travel trailer directly to Deam Lake SRA, Clark State Forest's horse camp, or even a friend's driveway in nearby Henryville or New Albany. They'll level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every switch and valve before handing you the keys. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location, so filter by Delivery on the search page and message hosts to confirm your campground. It turns your rental into a true turnkey getaway.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/deam-lake-state-recreation-area/How does mileage work, and can I get an RV rental with unlimited mileage?
Mileage is flexible on RVezy: each host sets a per-night mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per night) and lists their per-mile overage rate right on the listing, so there are zero surprises at drop-off. Some Borden hosts offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect if you're planning a longer loop like Borden to Mammoth Cave (about 90 miles south) or Borden to Brown County State Park (about 75 miles north). If you know your route, just add up the miles before you book and pick the listing that fits. Pro tip: message the host, many will bundle extra miles into your nightly rate at a discount if you ask up front.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/brown-county-state-park/What are the best campgrounds near Borden, IN for RV camping?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Borden. The closest option is Deam Lake State Recreation Area, just minutes from town, with electric sites, a swim beach, and quiet wooded loops. Clark State Forest, Indiana's oldest state forest, has a family campground plus a horse camp that welcomes RVs. About 25 minutes east, Charlestown State Park offers electric sites overlooking the Ohio River. For full hookups, several private RV parks across the river in the Louisville area provide 50-amp service and sewer at every site. Pro tip: book Deam Lake and Charlestown through the Indiana DNR reservation system at camp.in.gov up to six months in advance, summer weekends sell out fast.
camp.in.gov/When is the best time of year for a Borden RV trip?
Late April through late October is the sweet spot for a Borden, IN RV trip, with peak comfort in May, June, September, and October when daytime highs run a pleasant 70 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. July and August get warm and humid (mid-80s to low-90s with high dew points), so AC and a shaded site become your best friends. Fall is genuinely spectacular here, the hardwood ridges around Clark State Forest light up with color from mid-October through early November and campgrounds fill quickly. Winter rentals are available too if your host offers them, with mild stretches in the 40s and the occasional snow. Pro tip: shoulder seasons mean lower rates and far fewer mosquitoes.
weather.gov/lmk/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay renting in Borden?
You'll be just fine, first time renting an RV is something RVezy hosts handle every single day. At pickup, your host gives you a hands-on orientation covering driving tips, leveling, water, propane, the generator, and dumping tanks, and they're a text away during your whole trip. Borden is a great place to learn because the roads around town (like State Road 60 and US-150) are wide, lightly trafficked, and gently rolling rather than mountainous. If you're still nervous, choose a Class B campervan or a smaller travel trailer for your first trip, or book a host who offers delivery so the RV is already parked and set up when you arrive. Confidence comes faster than you'd think.
in.gov/indot/What happens if I break down during my Borden RV rental?
Take a breath, you are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat tire on I-65, run low on fuel near Henryville, or have a dead battery at Deam Lake, one call dispatches help to your exact location. Your host is also a direct line for quick questions about quirks specific to their RV (every rig has a personality). For mechanical issues that need a shop, southern Indiana has RV service options in Sellersburg and Clarksville, both within about 20 minutes of Borden. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave the pickup driveway, it takes 30 seconds and adds huge peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Borden, IN?
Borden is perfectly positioned for a classic Midwest RV road trip. Head 90 miles south to Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky for the world's longest cave system and shaded riverside camping. Drive 75 miles north to Brown County State Park, often called the 'Little Smokies of the Midwest,' for jaw-dropping fall color. Cruise 45 minutes east to Charlestown State Park for Ohio River bluff views, or roll 2.5 hours west to Patoka Lake, Indiana's second-largest reservoir, for boating and bald-eagle watching. Cross-border trips into Kentucky are totally fine on RVezy rentals, just note that travel into Mexico is not permitted. Pro tip: a Borden-Mammoth Cave-Nashville-Brown County loop makes a perfect 5- to 7-day first RV trip.
nps.gov/maca/index.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I plan for?
Realistic numbers help you budget your motorhome rental in Borden with confidence. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, Class A's run 6 to 10 MPG, campervans (Class B) get 15 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG combined). Indiana gas prices typically sit right around the national average, and you'll find convenient fill-ups at the Pilot Travel Center in Memphis, IN and several stations along I-65 near Sellersburg. Plan roughly $0.30 to $0.60 per mile in fuel for most motorhomes. Pro tip: many larger rigs need diesel or only fit at truck-friendly pumps, so map your fuel stops along your route before you roll out.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Borden?
For Indiana state park campgrounds like Deam Lake, Clark State Forest, and Charlestown, book through the Indiana DNR reservation system (camp.in.gov) as soon as your dates are set, the system opens reservations up to six months ahead, and prime summer weekends often fill within hours of release. Fall foliage weekends in October and Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends are the hardest to snag. For private parks like Brooks RV Park in Louisville, two to four weeks ahead is usually plenty. Pro tip: if your first-choice park is full, check mid-week arrivals (Sunday-Wednesday), availability opens up dramatically and rates are often lower at private campgrounds.
camp.in.gov/What are driving conditions like around Borden, IN?
Driving an RV around Borden is refreshingly stress-free compared to most major metros. The town sits in the rolling Knobs region, so expect gently winding two-lane roads like State Road 60 and curvy sections on Bartle Knob, take them slow and you'll be fine in any rig. I-65 is your main artery for longer trips and handles big motorhomes well, with truck-friendly exits at Henryville and Sellersburg. Avoid the low covered bridges in older Clark and Floyd County back roads (clearances under 11 feet), and skip downtown Louisville's narrow streets if you're in anything over 28 feet. Summer thunderstorms can pop up fast, check radar before driving, and watch for deer at dawn and dusk year-round.
in.gov/indot/2371.htmWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Borden?
Campgrounds near Borden range from full-service resorts to rustic state forest sites, so you can match your hookup needs to your trip style. Deam Lake SRA offers electric sites (30-amp) with a central dump station and potable water fill, plus modern restrooms and showers. Clark State Forest's family campground has electric and non-electric sites with vault toilets and a dump station near the entrance. Charlestown State Park provides 50-amp electric and a dump station too. For full hookups (water, sewer, 50-amp at every site), Brooks RV Park in Louisville is your closest bet at about 25 minutes away. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving the campground, rural fill-ups between sites are limited in this corner of Indiana.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/deam-lake-state-recreation-area/What's typically included inside a Borden RV rental?
You'll be pleasantly surprised by how move-in ready most rentals are. A typical motorhome rental in Borden comes with sleeping for 4 to 8 (combinations of queen beds, bunks, and convertible dinettes), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace, and a dining area with seatbelted travel seats. Many hosts also include a generator for boondocking, an outdoor awning, a TV, and basic linens and kitchen kits. WiFi is usually BYO via your phone's hotspot since rural southern Indiana cell coverage varies (Verizon and AT&T are strongest around Borden). Each listing spells out exactly what's included, and add-ons like camp chairs or bike racks are often available for a small fee.
fcc.gov/BroadbandDataWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Borden offer a long menu of add-ons that turn a good trip into a great one: kitchen kits, linen and towel packs, outdoor grills, fire pits, bike and kayak racks, generators, and even propane top-offs. Pickup is usually at the host's home or a nearby meeting point, and many hosts also offer delivery (often within a 50- to 100-mile radius covering Louisville, Bloomington, and Mammoth Cave). Mileage policies and add-on prices are listed right on each listing, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: bundle delivery with full setup at Deam Lake or Charlestown State Park, you skip every learning curve and start your vacation the moment you arrive at the campsite.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/charlestown-state-park/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at the time of booking using a credit or debit card, no cash and no off-platform transfers to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (the amount is shown on each listing and varies by RV) and released back to your card after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any issues, do a quick walk-around video at pickup and again at drop-off, this is your best friend if there is ever a question about a pre-existing scratch. Keep all communication inside the RVezy app so everything is documented, and you are set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs a campervan rental in Borden a good option for solo or couple trips?
A campervan rental in Borden is a fantastic choice for solo travelers, couples, and small families who want simplicity and great fuel economy (15 to 20 MPG vs. 8 to 10 in a big motorhome). Class B vans fit easily into standard parking spots, navigate the winding Knobs back roads with zero stress, and slip into smaller campsites at Clark State Forest or boondocking pull-offs in Hoosier National Forest about 90 minutes west. They typically include a bed, mini kitchen, and either a wet bath or a portable toilet. Pro tip: vans are perfect for a quick Borden-to-Red River Gorge weekend (about 2.5 hours southeast in Kentucky), one of the most scenic short road trips from the area.
