Campgrounds near Brownstown, Indiana
Brownstown sits in Jackson County in southern Indiana, at the edge of the roughly 18,000-acre Jackson-Washington State Forest and its distinctive ridge-and-valley terrain known locally as the "knobs." The main forest office is located a short drive southeast of Brownstown on State Road 250, in a part of the state that contains this unusual topography. The area draws RV travelers with a mix of state-run lakefront camping and small private campgrounds, plus easy access to covered bridges, farm markets, and the East Fork of the White River.
The closest developed RV camping is Starve-Hollow State Recreation Area, which encompasses approximately 280 acres including a scenic 145-acre lake and offers 90 electric campsites, 55 full-hookup sites, and multiple rent-a-camp cabins. Additional options within a reasonable drive include Weary Traveler and Hardens Camp Tennessee Indiana for smaller-scale stays, and Scottsburg/Raintree Lake KOA for a full-service private-park experience about half an hour east.
Brownstown itself is compact and rural, roughly an hour south of Indianapolis and an hour north of Louisville, which makes it a practical base for exploring southern Indiana by RV.
Things to do near Brownstown
At Starve-Hollow State Recreation Area, families can fish, swim from a sandy beach, and rent boats on the 145-acre lake. The park offers fishing, boat and canoe rental, swimming on the large sandy beach, and a nature/education center, plus basketball, horseshoes, playgrounds, a softball field, a fish-cleaning station, fishing docks, and three boat ramps. Kayak, rowboat, and canoe rentals run from mid-April through October, and a valid Indiana fishing license is required. The lake is restricted to trolling motors only, which keeps things quiet.
Hikers and mountain bikers have room to spread out in the surrounding state forest. Jackson-Washington State Forest and Starve Hollow together offer roughly 12 miles of mountain-bike trails in two locations, with bikes permitted only on those designated routes. The Knobstone Trail, Indiana's longest footpath, passes through Clark State Forest, Elk Creek Public Fishing Area, and Jackson-Washington State Forest. Nearby, the Medora Covered Bridge, Fort Vallonia, and Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge round out easy day trips from camp.

Summer is the primary camping season. The prime time to visit Starve Hollow State Recreation Area is from May through October, when the gates are staffed daily and full services are available. Beginning in May, gates are open seven days a week and remain open through October. Weekends fill quickly at the state recreation area, especially lakefront electric sites, so plan around holidays if flexibility matters. The swimming beach operates from the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
Shoulder-season trips in spring and fall are quieter but come with reduced services. Water is typically turned off across most of the property from November through mid-March or April, and modern comfort stations close for the winter. The education center is closed November through April. Starve Hollow's 13 rent-a-camp cabins are available March through November and closed December through February. Winter camping on primitive or electric sites is still possible year-round with reservations, but campers should prepare for limited facilities. Blue-green algae advisories can affect lake swimming in warm months, so check current conditions before booking a beach-focused trip.
How to book campgrounds near Brownstown
Indiana state park sites, including Starve-Hollow, use a centralized reservation system. Reservations can be made online at Camp.IN.gov or by calling 1-866-6CAMPIN (1-866-622-6746) during designated hours. Campsites can be reserved up to six months in advance of arrival, and Indiana is essentially 100% reservable, with a small number of walk-in registrations still permitted on the day of arrival. Family cabins at most parks, including Starve Hollow, can be booked up to one year in advance.
Lakefront electric sites and full-hookup loops at Starve-Hollow book earliest for summer weekends, so families planning a school-break trip should aim well ahead of peak dates. Private options such as Weary Traveler, Hardens Camp Tennessee Indiana, and Scottsburg/Raintree Lake KOA are booked directly through each property's own website or by phone; KOA locations also accept reservations through the KOA app and central booking line. An Indiana state park entrance pass or daily gate fee applies on top of the campsite reservation at Starve-Hollow.
What to expect at Brownstown-area campgrounds
Sites at Starve-Hollow range from full-hookup RV pads with electric, water, and sewer to electric-only lakefront spots and a smaller number of primitive sites. Facilities include modern restrooms with showers, several ADA-accessible sites, and a fish-cleaning station. Lakefront electric sites can be somewhat close together, while middle-area full-hookup sites offer more space. Recreation options right in the park include hiking trails, fishing for smallmouth bass and crappie, a swimming beach, boat rentals, and an education center.
Cabins are simple. Each has a front porch with a swing, an outside electric outlet, and a porch light; inside are two small rooms with a ceiling fan, a heating and cooling unit, and electrical outlets. Cabins do not have running water or restrooms, but vault toilets and modern comfort stations with showers are nearby. Expect a quiet trolling-motor-only lake, hilly terrain outside the campground, and cell coverage that can be spotty deeper in the state forest.

weather.gov/ind/I've never rented an RV before, is it really doable?
Yes, and Brownstown is genuinely one of the friendliest places to learn. First time renting an RV usually feels intimidating until pickup day, when your RVezy host walks you through every system: leveling, slide-outs, water, propane, generator, and dumping. You can text them throughout your trip with questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included in every booking. Start with a smaller travel trailer or Class C motorhome, and pick a nearby first stop like Starve Hollow (just 5 miles away) so you're not driving for hours your first day. Hundreds of Indiana families take their first RV trip every season, you'll be amazed how fast it clicks.

Just call the number provided in your booking and help is dispatched, whether you're 5 minutes from Brownstown or deep in Hoosier National Forest. Your host is also usually a phone call or text away if you have questions about a quirky switch or how to reset the inverter. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the driveway and you can relax and enjoy the scenic Skyline Drive worry-free.

Yes, cross-state travel is allowed and Brownstown's location makes it a natural launchpad. Travel into Canada or Mexico is not supported by RVezy's insurance coverage, so plan your route within the United States. For most renters, the dozen-plus states within a day's drive offer more than enough adventure for one trip, and the host can confirm any specific routing questions before you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Brownstown RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but Brownstown's central southern Indiana location keeps trips manageable. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 MPG, Class A coaches 6 to 10 MPG, and a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer 10 to 14 MPG. Indiana gas prices generally run slightly below the national average, hovering around $3.00 to $3.50 per gallon in recent seasons. A weekend round trip from Brownstown to Brown County State Park (about 100 miles total) might cost $30 to $50 in fuel. Pro tip: the Pilot Travel Center off I-65 at Seymour, 10 miles east, has RV-friendly diesel lanes and is the cheapest fuel stop in the area.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Brownstown?
For Indiana state parks like Brown County, Starve Hollow, and Spring Mill, book through camp.IN.gov (Indiana's official reservation system) as soon as the 6-month rolling window opens, especially for any weekend from May through October. Fall color weekends in late September and October often sell out within hours. Hoosier National Forest sites at Hardin Ridge book through recreation.gov, also up to 6 months ahead. Jackson-Washington State Forest campsites are reservable on camp.IN.gov as well. Pro tip for last-minute trips: weekdays almost always have availability somewhere within 30 minutes of Brownstown, and many private RV parks along US 50 hold sites for walk-ins.
camp.in.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Brownstown?
Driving in and out of Brownstown is refreshingly easy, this is rural southern Indiana, not a metro maze. US 50 runs straight through town as a coast-to-coast highway, and I-65 is just 10 minutes east at Seymour, giving you wide lanes and plenty of pull-offs. The terrain gets hillier and curvier as you head into Jackson-Washington State Forest or toward Brown County, so take Skyline Drive and SR 46 at a relaxed pace in a larger rig. One specific heads-up: if you're driving to Brown County State Park, all RVs must use the West Gate off SR 46, the North Gate has a covered bridge with only 9 feet of clearance. Otherwise, smooth sailing through Hoosier hills.
